Why do DEVS insist that "balancing" a game takes away from the personality of a fighter?

Missing the point.

You stated that

Which is flat out wrong since unless a game is totally broken, such a case would never occur. There has never been an FG as far as I can recall where one character flat out beats another character 100% of the time (not even ST). All tier lists and match-up charts say is that some characters will have to work harder when facing certain other characters.

First time I’ve ever agreed with you on anything.

which is why people should watch more tournament vids, and not relying on charts. Unless the game is completely broken, in which cause you’ll see tons of mirror matches.

If you do that you’re an idiot, if plan on competing and don’t any heed to a tier list you’re an idiot whether or not your playing High tier or low tier. It’s a good idea to look at a tier list to get an idea of what you’re MUs are like and what you’re gonna need to work on.

Watching tournament vids is more useful then looking at a chart.

Tournaments vids don’t tell you everything about a games current metagame. At best, tournament vids show you how a certain player plays a character - something that can lead to copycating and not really understanding what’s going on. To truly understand what’s going on then you need to actually dig deeper and take advantage of the resources that we have today - tier lists are part of that.

Another things, while most players try to win with skill, for the most part, the real greats, the ones who actually win tournaments consistently, are those that do so by minimizing the amount of skill they need to win. In other words, they play smart and make smart choices from the very start (character selection). For a real world example, look at Viscant when he won Marvel at Evo 2011. Jay realized that most people would be running Team Best Friends (Wolverine, Akuma) so he went ahead and used a team that countered that and had Dark Phoenix as anchor for insurance. In other words, Jay counterpicked the 80-90% of the attendees at Evo. That’s something he couldn’t have done without a tier list and detailed match-up information.

its not like looking at a tier chart and watching vids is mutually exclusive

Charts also arent going to help you learn infinite combos, combos, glitches, or how to beat character A with character B. Pretty sure people didnt learn how to unfly or AVHB from looking at a tier chart.

Videos for the most part only show you “what” (what combo, what character), charts are part of a larger pool of data that show you “why” (why pick xxx character, why avoid xxx character).

That said, as Pherai has stated, you can’t really take one without the other if you want to grow as a player. To simply say “tier lists are useless” both ignores this and sounds more like a scrub trying to do “tires don’t exits” argument (or is at least unhappy at the existence and of top tiers).

If the game was balanced we wouldn’t have any villains or low tier heroes. Whats the fun in that?

We have already cited Tekken and Guilty Gear for having a tournament viable low-tier. So that defuncts those theories you have there. ^^^^^

I may be the only one who looks at it like this, but, using Third Strike as an example, I just see lower tiers as more of a “hard mode.” When I started playing, I played Ken, but then the more into the game I got, I wanted to learn more about it and started picking characters that weren’t as good because it forced me to take advantage of a lot of mechanics and such that I could almost ignore by playing a top tier character.

Besides, if we’re talking about Capcom games, generally the most balanced ones are the least interesting, Hyper Fighting notwithstanding, and even that game isn’t as balanced as most people think.

nobody said they did. what universe do you live in where people consider looking at a tier chart a substitute for watching videos?

You can watch videos or look at tier lists

Pick one

And who the fuck said that they would???

he’s an idiot thats just saying random thing to act like he knows about fgs.

I could do that to.

Yo hecatom, just because you look at a teir list, doesn’t mean you know how to frc, and sindwinder loop, and infinite combo, and stuff. charts don’t help you learn *looks up more random fg words" you know like gaurd breaks, and unblockables, aaaaaaaaaaaaand um DUSTLOOPS, aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand oh yea FADC. TIER LISTS ARE DUMB.

He says pretty much atypical hearsay about other games he doesnt really know too with very similar lack of reading comprehension lol
