Why do charge moves exist?

Charge moves have been around as long as anyone cares to remember, but why? Sure it helped make Guile different than Ryu back in the early 90’s, but that was before super-moves. Now we need to pull off nonsense like charge partitioning, buffering, just to get a decent combo off, while anyone can pull off a jump-in/ punish double quarter-circle super combo. I don’t understand why this is necessary.

I’m not bringing this up because I’m new to fighting games, I’m bringing it up because of Chun-Li’s completely inexplicable change to charge supers making me realize how absurd and pointless the command is. And I don’t see it as a matter of skill either, when something takes more skill to pull off the same effect, we call that an imbalance in any other game.

PRETZELS have been around as long as anyone cares to remember, but why? Sure it helped make GEESE different than Ryu back in the early 90’s, but that was before super-moves. I don’t understand why this is necessary.

i brought this up when sf4 first dropped, and just leave it alone. lol

I forgot who said it, but they had a great point.

Imagine Balrog with qcf commands and whatnot. He’d be one hell of a beast [moreso than he already is].*

*ST Balrog

All you’d hear is “OOOORGH!” over and over again. Chipped the fuck out!

Exactly. What if Guile could spam SB’s all day? Even with it being a charge move there are combos with 3 Sonic Booms.

2009 posters have been around as long as anyone doesn’t care to remember, but why? Sure it helped make 2009 different than 2008 a year ago, but that was before Street Fighter 4. Now we need to pull off nonsense like posting 5 times to get an avatar, get negbombed, just to get a decent thread off, while anyone from 2007 can pull off a negbomb/ posbomb double forumwank quarter-circlejerk super posting frenzy. I don’t understand why this is necessary.

I’m not bringing this up because I’m new to Shoryuken.com, I’m bringing it up because of Saotome Kaneda’s completely inexplicable thread closing habits making me realize how absurd and pointless Fighting Game Discussion is. And I don’t see it as a matter of intelligence either, when someone uses the search function to pull up the same thread, we call that not being a scrub in any other forum.

I usually thought of it as a way to balance a character.
Charged moves are usually better than command moves.
Think if guile or chun could throw their fireballs with QCF. they’d be broken.

and yes it does provide a non cookie-cutter style of play for a character. itd be boring if everyone had the same motions.

and as for the supers? yes SF3 did spoil us in that department by have NO charge supers.
Chun’s Ultra in SF4 is good as a punish, buthaving to charge it balances it. (IMO)

I’m not even gonna get into how good the other ultras would be if they were like that.

charge motions did make guile different from ryu, so much so that they are completely different characters in terms of how you play them

kinda like how balrog is just like ryu except without fireballs or shoryukens

yeah, and those arent practical combos at all. maybe a nice mixture next time like urien would be nice. you need to have charge skills, but not all your moves and supers are charge. oh, and obviously if they ever did decide to do away with charge moves, or mix in some qc moves with the charge characters, that they would obviously adjust shit. like you cant leave a character like balrog as he is now, but make his moves qcf and dp motions. lol.

its unfortunate that you cant enjoy a game at certain levels due to the limitations of your character, but oh well i guess. like what if guiles flash kick was a dp move in sf4. hmmmm

obviously thats not how he would play if they did make it a qcf move. thats how he would play if they made NO adjustments, and just made it a qcf move, which would be the most retard shit ever.

I didn’t think making a game deeper mechanically was such a problem.

It really doesn’t take that much more skill to combo with a charge character than it does with a qcf character.

exactly, fucker is already crazy enough in st and even in the nerfed hd remix version.

if he had command moves for his dashes, he’d be up there with st akuma.

gdlk

Because not everybody likes doing quatercircles for everything. Besides, if everything were quatercicler, shit would get boring. For some games it works (MvC2) some games just feel kinda funky once you realize that everything is a quater circle (Garou). Although Garou is still a stylin’ game even with the lack of charge characters. Shit, some of just like holding that shit back and unleashing on your nuts.

Your nuts are just not ready for what we hold back.

I’ve always known why charge characters are about charging but after actually seeing the result of them not being able to charge…Holy Shit!

Kain ?

Let’s look at a case study that isolates the charge as more or less the only variable factor in an otherwise controlled set of characteristics. We’ll compare the hadoken and the sonic boom, two fireball moves that travel at a similar height and rate. Due to the QCF, the hadoken has a quick start-up, with a slow recovery to balance it out. On the other hand, the charge means that the sonic boom has a slow start-up, with an appropriately quick recovery. That one difference forces you to apply these two otherwise similar moves in vastly different ways. It makes them unique.

So, to answer your question, charge moves exist so that people who think they know game design better than the game designers have a reason to complain.

I should have clarified that I was referring more towards super-moves. It was all fine back in Street Fighter II, but what’s going on now? In what ways is Guile’s SF4 super superior to any other supers, for example?

I was asking a question, not complaining. I am utterly sick of the internet thinking EVERY SINGLE LITTLE PHRASE with a negative tone is automatically complaining.

This site has always been way too touchy.

Why can’t we have one button supers? QCFs are pretty archaic. Get rid of 720s also.

Without getting too technical, I think it’s the “negative tone” thing that’s tripping people up here.
