if people want to get good, they only need to make the time that they spend on the game more valuable
of course in reallity not many people would be able to adapt to other games quickly, but i guess that its because they dont have a good fighting game background in terms of variety

Its quality not quantity. And no, I don’t have much free time like it did back in the 90’s/early 2000’s…work, wife, etc. Maybe that’s where my confusion comes from, I’ve played for a long time that I know how FG’s work…especially ones that weren’t easy mode with shortcuts etc (SSF4 bleh). Plus, different types of strategies can be used in most fighters, more times its the mind games of the game itself that will win/lose you the match. Maybe it’s not that way in SSF4, gave it a shot, but then went back to the 3s’s of the genre.

Balance - Capcom flat out said they weren’t trying to make a balanced game because people didn’t want Versus titles to be balanced. Which sounds deeper - a game with ~10 tournament viable character combinations (assuming MvC3 boils down to around the same number of popular teams as MvC2), or a game with 520+ (AH3)?

I love AH3, but cmon man, not every arcana+chara combination is tourney viable. And I really doubt you can judge MVC3’s balance this quickly.
Also, character balance doesnt matter that much if the top tier is really deep. Not saying that I know that MVC3’s theoretical top tier is just incredible to play or that AH3 doesn’t have a lot of depth, but I’m just making a point. Character balance is somewhat overrated.
