Seb and Yipes/Chrs Hu with the colour commentary.
S-Kill is a no brainer. If seb is there I would like him to do it instead, maybe they could take take shifts doing play by play or something haha. Yipes or Skisonic would be great too, both do good color commentary while still having a deep knowledge of the game.
I imagine it’ll be a similar team to last years, with them bringing in guest commentators and interviewing people throughout the days.
I like Seb and Dogface, I think the dynamic of East vs West would be interesting. Seb knows his stuff and he’s not an overly powerful personality, meanwhile Dogface is hilarious. I think it would be a good match.
Seth Killian is easily the best commentator because he doesnt go all insane by shouting things that nobody understands. Victor Dogface is a good pick too.
you’re telling me g4 cant pick it up? they show much lamer shit that probably doesnt get near as many viewers as EVO would.
Rules for decent commentating:
#1 Don’t give shout outs every other minute to irrelevant stuff
#2 Don’t constantly interrupt others
#3 Don’t use lame ass lingo like salty, free, on blast (I swear it was only a few years back that we kept saying shit like scrub and stairs)
#4 Actually talk about the damn match, not about whether or not you’re scratching your ass
#5 Give some actual insight on the game, match-up, and players
#6 If you’re going to attempt humor make sure it’s during a down time, not when shit is intense
With all that said I would nominate Seth Killian/James Chen and DogFace. I don’t care who gets the spot between Killian and Chen since they would fill out the same roll of providing actual insight. DogFace on the other hand can provide comedy while at the same time not be a fucking pain to listen to.
Chris Hu needs to improve his English like tenfold before doing commentary for 4000+ live audience.
Seb votes > James Chen votes so far? Really? lol James Chen has way better commentary because of experience playing the game. Love Seb but he’d have a lot of work cut ahead of him to really do it for the whole weekend; it’s just not exciting or knowledgeable.
And who was doing the ArcadeInfinity ran bat commentary around and before SF4 released on consoles? That stuff was pretty entertaining too.
s-kill and viscant, maybe dogface for flavor. i guess nobody watches the box arena videos but viscant is easily second only to s-kill in the “game knowledge commentator” stakes
I think part of what makes Hu funny is his broken English (I don’t think anyone would care of some American guy said “You don’t get scared, and neither do I”, or “If he misses that link he’ll get punished”).
But regardless, I don’t think Hu has the chops for Evo. Maybe as guest commentary for money matches or something. But the serious stuff needs to be handled by Seth.
I’m actually surprised Chen got as many votes as he did, and I think some of it has to do with just being a nice guy in general and a friend of other staff/commentators. I’m sorry, but that guy gets way overhyped and screams to the point of mic fuzz waaaay too frequently, and it ruins a lot of intense moments. I’ve listened to him a lot and he frequently says things that are just plain wrong, says things are punishable when they aren’t, says wrong frame data (nit picky i know but if you don’t know those things you should just not say them). He also FREQUENTLY repeats himself, saying the same phrase like 5 times over the course of a match, and says stuff like “Super meter carries over to the next round in ssf4” Oh really? What insightful commentary. We know the rules man.
Some of you seem to think this was my personal top 10, definitely not. Remember, its just as important to make sure the people running evo know who we DONT like, as who we DO. If you’re trailing in votes, yet commentate frequently, take the hint. I’m pleased to say the votes for the most part are going the way I hoped they would ,except rockefellar, but he’s mostly not getting votes cause of all the noobs.
I would also vote for Chris Hu. I enjoy his commentary.
I don’t know why people wouldn’t like Seb’s commentary, every time i listen to it i seem to learn something new while still having entertaining commentary. I would like if the commentator’s switched off every couple hours just to keep them fresh, but while also changing it up.
anyone except Chris Hu… he was funny for like 5 minutes
My top 5
I hoped to have had a blog entry about why with example clips, but this is as good as any time to for a quick rundown …
Seth “s-kill” Killian - One of the best - if not the best - SF English commentator on the planet period. His obvious depth of game knowledge is unrivaled and is just a pure pleasure to listen to. A no-brainer.
Skisonic - His unique mix of hype, game knowledge and flow to his commentary makes all matches exciting and entertaining. He’s been around the scene forever, and all the credibility that comes along with that clearly shows in his narration. Another no-brainer.
Sebiel “Seb” FADC - A relative newcomer to the scene, Seb started helping the community immensely by streaming local NYC / EC tourneys. However, his depth of knowledge of SF4 and the way he explains it subtly in the match is highly informative and doesn’t detract from the in-game action. A lot of commentators will try to explain a particular move and it just ends up messing up the flow of the commentary. Seb succinctly explains the action in a clear and effective manner.
Chris Hu - What can you NOT say about this guy? His unique blend of humor, game knowledge and voice makes Chris one of the most entertaining commentators we’ve ALL grown to love. Many people will detract from his commentary, insisting that it his obvious accent that makes it the only selling point. They would be dead wrong. Being a top player gives him insight into technical side of play and his commentary on mind games is something we don’t hear often from commentators.
Magus1234 - Magus’ “pulls-no-punches” commentary is a refreshing blend of straight up truth and technical game knowledge. He’ll put players on blast when necessary, but quick to give proper credit when a great play is performed. He’s also pretty damn hilarious with the type of humor I’m down with. Definitely a dark horse favorite of mine, and I think he should be given a shot to commentate Evo.
Honorable mentions: James Chen, Keits, Viscant
lolololol
ski gets on my nerves because he pretends to be hype when nothing is going on.
I voted S-Kill which is just obvious. You know that everything coming out of his mouth about SF4 is going to be factual. He works for Capcom. Seb is my other choice. I think the FADC commentators are the most entertaining.
whatever that asians guys name was who did east coasts big tourney was it like john chu or something? idk but i cant forget his horrible asian accent ever lol he was very " Ham bitches " about it lol. You know who would make a great person for the job, Denzel Washington or Morgan freeman IDC if they dont know shit about the game but at least itll sound nice when you here them say softly and modestly say " Now Ryu here just did a whats it called a jump punch and he flashed Yellow and now is shooting fire outa his hands my now, how pleasant"
Sanchez is pretty funny too
I’m not a big fan of Seth Killian’s commentary. His only reaction to someone getting hit is "Oh no!"
I’d rather listen to a cat stuck in a washing machine than Skisonic’s commentary.
I like Chris Hu’s commentary
Sanchez for Spanish commentary
