I’ve watched a lot of streams lately, and for some of us who are too far away to make the trip down to evo, the stream is a big deal. The quality of commentating can really alter the quality of the stream. A commentator can take a monotonous match and make it entertaining, or they can ruin what would’ve otherwise been an epic moment with squealing and stupidity. Some commentators really enhance the watching experience with their insightful comments and soothing voice, whereas others can make you want to dig out your ear drums with a rusty spoon by screaming “SERIOUSLY!!!” or “HeyYoIWasLikeUmOnBlastYoForFreeAndLikeYaYo”
Use this thread to let the Evo Staff know who you think should keep up the good work (or get more active commentating) and who should put the mic down, because not everyone likes to hear their voice as much as they do.
I tried to include all the regular commentators here, as well as a few who are popular for games other than SF4, as well as a few who don’t commentate as much as they probably should.
Edit: Its a multiple choice poll, so feel free to pick everyone you’d like to see, not necessarily just your favorite.
This poll is getting a lot of votes, really fast. A nominate for article would be fantastic.
Seb and Killian. Seb said he won’t go to Evo because he doesn’t have the money (the number of page hits on the Machinima video = money, go refresh dat) which sucks because I think he’s sort of better than Killian. Both are excellent either way, just not the fucking ECT2 commentator.
Chris Hu is an interesting case, because theres very few people who feel neutral about him. Theres a lot of people who think he’s the funniest guy on the planet, but also a lot who find him annoying. There wasn’t room for everyone I wanted, and since theres no ‘dislike’ option i chose to leave him out. I personally think he’s hilarious, and I’m sure he will at least make an appearance.
Please don’t have the new commentators from ECT2. It was clear that they didn’t really know what they were talking about and just provided meaningless play by play to the matches (Example: http://www.youtube.com/user/FrameAdvantageDotCom#p/u/53/IHLpg92IvwA). Seb and Yipes for Evo would be a good combo. Arturo is always good too. A good mix of insight and entertainment.
I like Chris Hu when he don’t think, or try to be particularly funny himself, but when he tries to abuse u no scare I no scare, and other stuff he is known for… he gets a little annoying. Also I see him as a solo commentator… Some commentators are great teams, but whenever Hu is with someone, he always interupts them and runs his own thing.
Seth Killian is an obvious choise. He brings the knowledge and some humor, but a guy like Arturo (When he isn’t too shoutout YO O, but actually trying to commentate for real) would probably go great together with Seth.
Most of all I would like to see Seth Killian together with Yipes though:P
Seb is also good, and Seth + Seb would be a nice team
I want my Yipes+S.Kill combo.Wheres Yipes on that list?
I love the likes of Skisonic,James Chen,S.Kill,Seb and Arturo but they sound flat after awhile if theres no hype man.Yipes does exactly that,he has a natural flow to his speech and the phrases he comes out with to describe whats happening in the game really fit well.
Also Rockefella has been out of fighting games for like 2 years now.
I want some one who is serious, while having a joker.
chris Hu, and some one like Killan or something like that. That is what makes for good commentating some one being serious and some one cracking smart ass remmarks.
How is Yipes and Chris Hu on that list, but Arturo and Kai are? I’ve NEVER heard Kai commentating (I’m assuming it’s the Fuerte player) and Arturo is just plain annoying with shout outs every 5 seconds.
That being said Seth K is a must, James Chen, SkiSonic, and Seb are very good. The Seth K and Choi’s roomate combo last night was pretty good also.
Seth Killian - For his knowledge about the game, his ability to speak clearly and quickly, and ability to maintain a neutral attitude. He does awesome play-by-play.
Yipes - You don’t need two play-by-play commentators, and Yipes does some of the best color commentary in the community.
Skisonic - Chris Hu is my personal choice, but Skisonic can do both color OR play-by-play. He would make a good standby in case one of the other commentators is unavailable.
Seth is hands-down the primary choice for Evo commentary. Nobody else, even the better commentators, approach his balance of play-by-play ability and technical knowledge of the game. Seth can come up with something clear and substantial to say about any player, any character, any matchup, at any time without missing a single beat. He’s, like, ESPN-caliber commentary. He’s a little dry for the most part, but for analysis and play-by-play, nobody else comes close.
For raw color I would rather see Yipes because he’s much less hyper than most of the alternatives while still being entertaining. People like Arturo are fun in small doses, but sometimes their hype just overwhelms their ability to communicate.
