Who likes following the FGC more than playing?

While I love playing, if there’s a stream on I’m going to watch that instead. Being in MN means that I don’t really have any opportunities to get out there and play, so all I really have is online matchmaking and streams. I hope to attend EVO next year though! Also, I do realize there is a MN thread before anyone says that.

I tend to watch steams and matches if I’m eating something, just to make my eating experience more enjoyable. I don’t watch casuals (where’s no one’s really trying) or online matches (where people are getting hit by stupid stuff thanks to button delay) unless it’s from an old or obscure game like MVC1 or Jackie Chan: Fist of Fire.

Do you have no local scene at all?

But see, if the community becomes more about watching than actually playing, THAT is what I’m afraid of. The population of ignorant, whiny stream monsters now is bad enough. I’m not exactly leaping for joy at the idea of more of them appearing, bigger payouts be damned.

Oh, and I was more addressing the topic as a whole, not your original post, so don’t feel like I was attacking you for not going to irl gatherings. Everyone has their reasons, I know

But many of the people watching would inevitably try and play, and some good players could get into the scene that way. I agree about the stream monsters though. Stream monsters are something that will probably never go away though lol. Also, I don’t think the majority of people watching the stream share that mentality. They are just more vocal. I for one just lurk in the chat w/o saying anything or, more often than not, I close out the chat portion.

Well I am in a special situation atm. I am living in Korea teaching English for the next year, so yeah I don’t really have a local scene. I’ve been talking with ppl in the Korea thread here and most of the good action is in Seoul. But I am 4 hours away from seoul and it would cost over a hundred bucks every weekend to go down there. There are some of us trying to organize something in Daegu, which is a lot closer so that might work.

Plus, I have been to the recommended arcades in Seoul and they only ever have 1 SF machine. There is a lot of Tekken 6 though. But I don’t really like Tekken. I did get to play Melty Blood for the first time and it was interesting. I’d like to play that some more.

The one arcade in my city (that I know about, since I don’t speak Korean) has no SF machine, and 2 Tekken 6 machines. The rest are old KOF games and stuff like that. There is also an arcade 40 minutes away from me that has TTT 2, but like I said, I don’t like the way tekken plays.

Online, since my account was made in America, it keeps trying to match me up with Americans and the lag is usually horrendous. I’ve been looking into making a Korean or Japanese account.

I should be more involved in the community. My dream is to commentate a stream or tournament, and make fart noises on the mic.

My god i wish i was you.

Sometimes I think the attitudes within the FGC are kinda self destructive. Player and tournaments need sponsors. Sponsors need exposure for their products. The more spectators the better. What’s it matter if people are more spectator than player. Their stream hit, and merchandise purchases ultimately means more money for the people that are players. I don’t see why fear of more stream monsters would deter that. I understand the fear of the games themselves getting super deluded down to where they’re anti competitive. But I figure the FGC will just reject games that are simply unplayable in a competitive setting anyway.

Because dudes are afraid of under-performance.

I’m the kind of guy who would love to attend a tournament, but since there’s no local scene near my university streams are literally my only option. The closest things to FG’s my friends play are Brawl; they won’t play anything with long combos or execution requirements. Hopefully I’ll be able to attend something over the Christmas break.

First things first. Go to/organize local gatherings and tournaments, then worry about about EVO. You have no business going abroad for a tournament if you do not even support the scene in your own country.

k bro

yea ! Fuck playing.
fighting games take too much time, effort and dedication to get good at.
its way easier to just watch and browse forums.
Local gatherings get repetitive and boring with too much of a skill gap and same people/characters all the time.
Online is garbage with button input delay.

When I can’t play or go to events my overal interest in my game disappears

bigger is definitely not always better.

Being apart of the FGC is alot more fun than just following it.

Haha, sometimes when I turn on SF4 and see all those Yellow and red bars, I say " Not right now, my body isnt ready"…goes to the asia replay channel list

Being an online warrior counts as being part of the community right?

If not, sadfrog.jpg

Part of the online community :wgrin:

I sorta do the same. I play a lot, but it’s by myself. I don’t play competitively, yet I like watching vids about location tests and changelogs. It’s just fun watching
