Anyone else find themselves in this situation? I seem to enjoy keeping up on the games and watching streams more than playing the games. I’ve owned MvC 3 and SSF4 for months, but have probably put 12 hours of gameplay on them combined. Yet I come to SRK daily and read all kinds of articles and will even watch videos and tutorials, even for games like Blazblue, which I don’t own and have never played. I was just wondering if anyone else was like that, or am I just the weird guy?
It is irritating lol but I don’t do that. I don’t go around telling people how to play lol. I’ve never tried to act like I am good at the game or that I know more than someone who actually plays. I just, for w/e reason, legitimately like following the FGC more than playing. I don’t ever claim to be good at them.
fyi this going to bring forth a biblical shitstorm
Why would it? It’s a simple question and I am just curious if there are others here that are like minded. I’m not saying I am good at the games or better than anyone…
So you must be one of those ‘worn out’ gamer types huh?
Sure, I like to go into YouTube comments and make sure everybody knows which players use characters that require skill and which ones are just spammers and so on. I thought everyone here did that? Actually playing the games is really difficult and stressful, I can’t say that I much care for it.
Nah not really. I love games, I mostly am playing RPGs and RTSs nowadays though.
Also, idk why “preference for following FGC over playing” is being translated as “i don’t play but tell ppl how to play”. I have not said anything to that effect.
I like doing both. Obviously playing more but I can’t really go out to a lot of tourneys like I used to. I just follow up and play locally when I can for now.
With any type of sport that has a steep level of play and competition you’ll ultimately have people that prefer to just study or be entertained by it than actually play it.
I don’t go to many tournaments…but when I have a chance to, it’s fucking great times. There’s nothing like being there feeling the hype.
I also don’t regularly follow FG events via stream monsters…because a part of me wishes I was there instead.
I still play though.
Too many people is the answer to your question.
I find it hilarious how the FGC has people who talk shit about other players abilities yet rarely play the games themselves.
I have always found it pretty retarded how people are so caught up in the FGC side drama about people they dont know personally and all they do is press some buttons in a game.
That’s the NFL and Madden 2k fanbase in a nutshell. That’s just what happens when people care about something that a “certain set of people” are only doing.
Well, a lot of people like to watch football or other conventional sports but don’t play it. So I think it’s perfectly natural.
Just shows how far this scene has come.
Also, I like to watch Starcraft every now and then, with commentary of course, but don’t play it myself.
I can’t say I care for the phenomenon of ‘spectator first, player second’ at all. Seth Killian’s thoughts on why Street Fighter rules are being roundly disregarded by a new breed of player. Fighting games should be about trying to beat the guy who’s better than you, not get his autograph.
While there is nothing wrong with that OP, I personally think it’s a bit of a shame. You’re missing out. Read the post above this again!
Lol i would never ask for a fighting game players autograph. While I respect Daigo and everyone for what they have accomplished in fighting games, i understand their real place in the grand scheme of things.
ill ask for Kayane’s autograph in the form on ‘Doz Digits’.
I’ve never understood the thought process behind being a spectator in something like SF.
Sports are physically taxing, so there’s some barrier there… most competitive environments are nowhere near as open as the FGC is, both in terms of monetary barriers, and actual barriers to entry based on skill. Fighting game tournaments are completely open… if you enjoy fighting games, why not play?
People reacting kinda weird imo.
I enjoy watching exciting Starcraft 1 & 2 matches with Tasteless/Artosis commentary. But I have only ever played SC1 a few times, and SC2 never. Because I don’t really enjoy playing those games. But I do like watching top people play them.
What if you don’t play, say, Tekken? Should you turn a stream of when it comes on, or does playing any fighting game give you a free pass to watch them all? Like, what’s the rules here.
Sometimes you just want some passive entertainment by watching a good game of a game. I definitely do not believe that the only thing stopping millions of people from getting off their asses and playing the sports they watch on TV is what’s listed in the post above.
I’m just posing questions… trying to understand.
For me, personally… if I like something, I tend to get into it, myself. That’s just who I am.
I don’t understand the concept of really liking something… having it readily available for you to enjoy with minimal barriers to entry, and just… not doing it.
To answer, I don’t play Tekken, and I do tend to turn the streams off when it comes on… not because I think Tekken is dumb… it’s that I think Tekken is too involved for me to learn, and because of my lack of understanding, I can’t appreciate watching Tekken, anywhere near as much as I would need to, to justify spending my time watching it.
That’s just me. I guess I’m not the biggest fan of “passive entertainment”. I don’t understand how you can find something entertaining, but not want to partake.
Why watch a porno, when you can fuck?
I don’t play SSF4; I just fuck around with mods and shitpost in General Discussion.
