From a marketing standpoint, this is pure genius on Warner Bros. part. The MK and NoES are both franchises owned by WB, which is trying to rebuild and market them towards a new generation of people.

When i seen the trailer for Freddy was just kept laughing. I would of never thought he was a MK9 type of character.I wanna see his story really cuz I just dont see how Freddy and MK9 go together. None of the MK9 characters sleep i think so…
Yeah Freddy is quite…lame (IMO). I feel like NRS came so close to having everyone take MK seriously with their new game, but with the addition of Freddy, I feel like the MK series is just being looked at like a joke again (again, just my opinion).
Yeah, because a game where multi-dimensional warfare between realms organized by ways of a martial arts tournament where movie stars, color/elemental themed ninjas, cyborgs, amazonian butterface cannibals, and a native american was taken sooooooooooooooo seriously to begin with. I mean, lets just ignore the other games where green beastmen using electricity, boxing kangaroos, wrestlers dripping in oil, transvestite dominatrixes, giant Onis whom eat their own arms, thong wearing superhumans, and lolis roam about beating each other’s asses. Freddy Krueger is just too much! Shit’s got to be taken seriously!
Now, I’m not trying to blow you two up, its just that MK has been a fictional world using comic book logic since day one. Jokes on you if you have been taking this or any other fighting game universe seriously.

No no noooooo… Its not the story or even to a point me taking the characters seriously, you took that WAY too literal. I mean will it be taken seriously as a tournament fighter. I dont give a shit if they put some stupid storyline in where lou kang is somehow goros nephew or something dumb and wacky… Whatever. But I do care about the longevity of this game and I fear gimmicks like this could make this game look like more of a joke than ever… Discussion is already rare over here in the mortal kombat section, this could essentially push players away.
Its just a HUGE WTF!?? ya know? Thats like them putting vegeta or fukin austin powers in the game. SURE they can explain it and make sense of why the character is introduced into this universe, I.e kratos, but shit… Some this just dont mix!!!
I think NRS said ‘fuck it’ and threw him in because they knew the tournament scene would be banning DLC characters. So it’s not hurting anyone. I can’t wait personally.
Most of the serious players that are on SRK are at TYM and MKU already, that’s why discussion is rare here.
But we aren’t. We are only banning them for the time being because they came out too close to EVO so there isn’t enough time to learn the match-ups. They’ll be allowed soon.

On one hand you state you don’t care about the story or characters being taken seriously, and yet you taking this seriously enough to question the game’s perception to others. It is why I brought up characters from other series; If people are really going to hold Freddy against MK, then the fighting game community lacks the most self awareness of any video game community ever. Not seeing how this is any more of a gimmick than any other roster addition, anyways.
And no, this is not like adding Vegeta or Austin Powers. Freddy is a horror character, Vegeta is a comic book character, Austin Powers is a comedy character. Freddy slaughters people in creative ways, Vegeta fights Goku for several hours, Austin Powers bangs chicks then makes sex pun while repeating jokes for 2 sequels straight. Freddy is a demon from the Netherrealm (AKA Hell), Vegeta was part of the space mafia, Austin Powers is British. Guess who fits.
