Who here uses an Octo-gate on there JLF?

The differences in gates is all preference. I followed the hype of the octo gate for my jlf and realized the throw was much longer then the square gate.

i personally believe people depend on the restrictor plate when in all actuality you dont have to fully throw the stick D DF F to do a fire ball wich is what makes having a square gate better because i dont have to touch the plate at all in the throw and the fireball comes out. Square gate also make charge characters easier simply for the back charges, on an octogate its just irritating to do Rog’s headbutt to ultra on an octo simply because the UB charge is that much farther to throw to

The only people who are true about the octagon or square are the ones who can back their motivation up with arguments, no pun intended, is because you said hype and i can understand where you’re coming from…

I spent my time in arcades since i was 14 till 22 everyday and i only know the bat and octagon, only cabinets who weren’t octagon were the white unbranded cabinets (NEO GEO) and they played like hell.

I have tried the Sanwa octo-gate after not being able to perform moves on the square-gate consistently and now I am back on the square-gate.

My reasons for going back to the square-gate are:
**

  1. Easier to block with the square gate. **

With the octo-gate you are always having to take a split second to align the stick with the diagonal corner. If you miss that corner then you miss the block and get comboed. Its just not accurate in the sense that in fast action combat you cant block on reaction because you always have to confirm your actions. So it breaks your flow and slows you down, if you know what I mean.

2) Shorter throw on the square-gate.

With the octo-gate the throw is alot longer then the square-gate so it makes returning to neutral position time a split second longer. So it makes the timing for dashes different and just screws everything up in my opinion. Also with longer throw there is more room for error where you can mess up an input by moving the stick in a wrong direction while trying to get from point A to B.

I tried using a Seimitsu LS-32 Spring alone and coupled with a JLF spring and it just made the joystick have worse reaction time. With both springs it made dashing so hard and inacurate because the springs made the joystick not hit the switches correctly. I really don’t know how to explain it. But people that are curious should find out for themselves its the only way to know for yourself.

The reason I tried modding my JLF with both springs was because I was looking to change the JLF from a quick/loose stick to a stiffer happ-like stick. Through my experiments I’ve come to realize that a stock JLF with square gate is the best to get accustomed to, its perfect. I have tried the Home Depot springs, Seimitsu Spring, Seimitsu + JLF springs, and Home Depot + JLF spring and my favorite is a stretched out JLF spring. The stretched out JLF spring is perfect for me, only thing is that it will require me to stretch it back out every few weeks/months but im not worried about it.

Although there is one thing that I’m glad I got to experience the Sanwa octo-gate for. It helped me learn how to input moves correctly. After using the octo-gate I feel a lot more comfortable on the square gate now. So if you are new to sticks and having problems pulling off moves then get the octo-gate to learn how to do moves then make up your mind if you wanna go back to the square gate or not.

I use the Octo gate to extreme lethality. I tried the square gate on the JLF and it made certain juggles into Ultras much easier with Cammy. The only problem I found was that I kept whiffing certain BnB combo moves and buffering her DP by mistake that I couldn’t take it anymore.

Once I switched back I started to win alot more and wasn’t hulk smashing my stick, lol.

I find the JLF with an Octo gate though is quite sloppy and the spring is too loose. I put a LS-32-01 spring in there and it felt just a tiny bit better.

I also tried the Seimitsu and the square gate and package feels great but I have a bad habit of riding the gate so I kept lifting it and whiffing moves. I’m trying out the LS-40 and next will be the LS-56 with an Octo gate (which from what I hear doesn’t affect the throw at all).

Cliffs: All of matter of preference.

Hmm, the stock SE (non-Sanwa) has such a long throw as well. I like the square gate 'cause it helps a lot with charge chars (specially Vega). However, I will mod my SE with Sanwa stuff, probably the standard JLF from Lizard Lick (MadCatz ready) and use the Octo gate. The edges seem greater for me, 'specially for motions like Hadouken (I don’t like not feeling the edges).

The TE however, will be square, dedicated for Vega >:)

out of the two i prefer the square much more. i’m using the octo-gate at the moment and i feel that my moves come out much better and faster with the square. when i play with the octo, i don’t really touch the edges much. if i do a lot of qcf motions maybe the octo. overall though i like the square. indeed a matter of preference.

I wanted an octo since the day I started playing with the square. Because of the amount of time it took for LL to send the octo to me, I abondoned the square just as I started getting used to it and incorporating it in my game.

The square is pretty cool.

However, I think my game is more fluid in an octo and my transition between defense and offense feels cleaner since the hold on the corners for the square are so much more deep. The throw on an octo is definitely bigger. Feels weird and first, but not a detriment once you get used to it. Only real issue I have with it is jumping back to escape ultras. because there are so many corners, I find I think I am holding up back where I am really in a standing back position. This kills me when fighting against Akuma and escaping a Raging Demon or a Zangief Ultra.

I can play any, but prefer an octo. An octo with a smaller throw would be bad assed. I may need to put that in my custom fight stick.

One more thing. Octo has short cut moves too. Just need to adjust. But Square is superior for charge characters without a doubt.

has anyone been able to make there throw shorter with the octo-gate on JLF? Ive tried the tape mod and i dont like the feel off it… ive tried shrink tubing and its too thick… dunno what to do now.

I started out on a square gate. After a while I tried the octo gate
and played on it for about 6 months. Now I’m back to square gate.
I think it is difficult to realize how great the stock square gate is
until you have played on an octo for a while. My main problem
with an octo gate is I can’t find the corners very quick or consistantly.
Soo… yeah, go ahead and try the octo out.

bump

I tried the octo but went back to the square. Didnt like the octo at all. But i did find it was helpful to me for charge characters, but since i play akuma it didnt help.

1 question. if I’m going to play MvsC2 and I play character like cable and magneto what plate is better?? I will appreciate the help!!

get a good ol’ american Happ stick

can i put one on my SFIV SE stick?? I use to play with the 15 aniversary but the sumoto converter for my ps3 dosent work after there last update
