There seems to be an extreme misconception about africa, in the minds of ignorant people. Its funny because you said “third world country”…but Africa is a continent…with many countries. Contrary to popular belief Africa has wealthy nations. Equatorial Guinea ranks 28ths in the world in GDP per capita. The Republic of Gabon is also a wealthy nation thanks to its large oil revenue. Botswanna has also had one of the most impressive economic gains in the entire world since its independence from britian. Just because all you hear in the media is Kony 2012, and genocides in poor african nations doesn’t mean thats how the whole continents life style is. I can understand your points, because they seem to remind me of the effects of the Mongol Yoke had on the Russians. However, even with a very shaky start the Russians were still able to keep up with the rest of the world.
My logic should work, but unfortunately many of their cultures are still stuck in Middle Ages or even before that. Seriously, there are Arab tribes that still live in caves, use Hammurabi’s Code for their makeshift justice system, and sell sheep milk from their herds to make a living. The word “school” might not even be in their vocabulary. Also, Africa is a fucking mess due to all the tribalism (and dictators spawning from this). The “community” has shit to do with foreign investors taking advantage of 3rd world countries. It’s that shit that perpetuates the cycles we so more than anything. If these people had the power to use their own countries resources and elevate themselves they wouldn’t have to really own their bullshit beliefs and religion to comfort them as they squander away in poverty.

What you fail to understand is that the Civil Rights movement didn’t fix everything. There was still racially-driven redistricting, housing discrimination, and most off all, the Iran/Contra scandal where CIA agents were selling drugs specifically in black communities to fund operations there. That, and the toughening of anti-drug laws that occurred around the same time that put at lot of black people in prison for decades for mere possession charges DEVASTATED black communities all over the country.
What you fail to understand is that the reason Africa is so fucked up is because of the European Imperialism. Did you know that when determining national borders, Imperialists purposely drew lines through tribal territories and had the nations encompass rival tribes to prevent them from uniting in revolt? Thats part of the reason why there is so much conflict now: these old rivalrys are a huge obsticle to national unity.
Another reason is that after European Imperialism ended, several African nations did unite and wanted to create Socialist countries. But the anti-Soviet US didn’t want that, so they assassinated leaders and either backed up dictators or left the nation in chaos.
And another reason is the neo-imperialism that goes on today: western companies are going to these economically-poor African nations and bribing the hell out of their leaders (and if their leaders refuse bribes, they’ll back an up-and-comer who will) and rob the nations of it’s resources and/or dump waste on their land.
The same Europeans who started the African slave trade that the American whites adopted here are the same Europeans who fucked up Africa (and their descendants are continuing the tradition). It would be if I abducted you and your family out of your home, dumped a ton of nuclear waste all over your neighborhood, forced you and you family to live in a run-down shack while you make me rich off your forced labor, then, after 50 years, set you “free” and penniless saying “Well, at least you aren’t living in that contaminated neighborhood you came from, right?”

Being mixed and the token black guy (I’m half white/black, but all consider me black), I’ve had many discussions with white people about race (always initiated by them, curiously enough). And when I tell them all the shit that has been done to black folks in America, I always stress that I’m not telling them this because I want them to feal guilty or bad: if they truly in their heart of hearts have no malice/animosity/negativity towards black people, then their is no reason to be upset or hurt or offended.
All I ask is that they understand.
I remember when I was a kid when the drug wars were really popping off, it was a terrible time. My mom and grandfather would say how vibrant and thriving the community was before the drugs started coming in. And now to find out as an adult that a government agency was behind getting those drugs in there…it hurts. I still see the aftermath every day in the streets, so that pain is with me every day. So when I hear people say (and NOT you, Dragoomba) “Slavery was over centuries ago! The Civil Rights movement was over decades ago! Get over it black people!”, those people are either ignorant, or evil.
