Ethnic background doesn’t matter. So what if there was no white people in the top 8 for sf4? What are you going to do tell white people to play better? This is almost borderline racism, even though it may not be intended. You play well because you practice, and have a lot of experience. There are many good white players but evo shouldn’t be about ethnic backgrounds. It’s just people playing street fighter. I know nothing bad was intended it was more of a curiosity thing. Anyway evo brings peeps together not the other way around.

you can introduce street fighter to caucasians but you can’t force the caucasians to play

There are probably other socioeconomic reasons, but I’m pretty sure demographics play a key role. In order to get good, you need a lot of comp. In order to have a lot of comp, you have to live in a major city. If you live in a major city, there will be a lot more minorities.
Look at the demographics of cities like NYC or LA, which are less than 50% white. Compare this to somewhere like Boise, Idaho, which is over 90% white, and it’s really not too surprising that there are so few white top players.
I fail to see the racism in pointing out that there were no white people in SF4 top 8. (And actually, this isn’t limited to SF4, or even to Evo 2009. Historically there have been very few white people in Evo’s top 8.)

I always assumed that since most of the white people I know are lazy (I’m white too), they never get good enough to compete.
Plus, white people like shooting stuff. Not punching stuff. Which is why we have clint eastwood and john wayne movies, and die hard and shit. while in other countries they’ve got toshiro mifune laying the smack down.
essentially. white people historically enjoy guns in their media (based purely on lame anecdotal evidence, in case you can’t tell). other folks like some ninja/samurai/kungfu stylings.
so those folks play street fighter, while the white man plays call of duty/halo/whatever has tom clancy’s name on it.
This does not explain why korea likes aliens (starcraft) though… but i suppose that movie “the host” was korean, and that monster (n.korea) looked like something you might find on a zerg planet.

suburban white people just prefer fps games for the most part. It’s the most popular genre as of now. Arcades aren’t even on their mind so don’t expect any halo kiddies to be excited about zoning/mindgames. Its all about the pew pew.
I mean as a white dude I quit playing fps games because they’ve all turned to shit in my mind. I don’t find fun in any of them anymore. Especially since more people are interested in spray & pray shooters (Call of duty) over Counterstrike.
Also, a large amount of whites tend to be pc gamers, and fighting games are rather scarce on the PC. So there is probably no awareness that they even exist. It was a good move for steam to add SFIV, though. Cuz it got someone I know that only plays shooters to play it, lol…

I agree with NKI, but I think one important thing that always gets left out is the persons ability to recognize mistakes and apply it afterward. A person could have good comp, and such, but their inability to adapt and learn from mistakes could hold them back.
Maybe not quite as true these days, but up until about a year ago, it was definitely true. Pretty much all of our current top players were bred in major cities, because that’s where all the comp was. This will certainly change as online play gets better and better.
I officially would trade my black skills in any fighting game for a white persons skill in raising interest rates and law making abilities…
