Chun-Li (against a cross spammer only, U2 all the way if not)
Dhalsim (good for a teleport punish, bad for punishing jumps, I might go back to U2... and I did)
El Fuerte (Tostada Plunge counter)
Ibuki
M. Bison (Dictator)
Rose (not sure on this one, good Rose players are a pain in the ass)
Seth
Vega (Claw)
Zangief (for crossing spamming)
Ultraspark
Abel
Adon
Akuma
Balrog (Boxer)
Blanka
Cammy
Chun-Li
Cody
C. Viper
Dan
Dee Jay
Dhalsim (I found a way to punish teleport with it...)
Dudley
E. Honda
Fei Long
Gen
Gouken
Guile
Guy
Hakan
Juri
Ken
Makoto
Rose
Rufus
Ryu
Sagat
Sakura
T. Hawk
These are what I consider my best options in a match after a long experience with El. The only one I could reconsider is Rose and Dhalsim… both are a pain in the ass…
U1 is for punishing jumps, but it is really ineffective against Blanka. As for counters, U2 is also effective against the same attacks, so I cannot agree with you.
Also, skilled player know what they must not do when Fuerte can use is Ultra. So U2 is more a big surprise hard to figure out.
U1 is required against Blanka. Shuts down horizontal ball completely and removes his ex up-ball option on wake-up when you safe jump him.
Also, I’m not really sure of the point in this list if you’e not going to explain the reason why you’d pick the ultra in such a match-up. It’s cool that you’re contributing, but I’d rather you give objective, tested advice, rather than what you think may or may not work.
Can someone explain to me a situation in which Ultra Spark is better and why?
I mean they’re both grab ultras. They’re both anti-air. They both can catch FA, backdash and backjumpers. They both bypass projectiles. They both land on a poke/throw whiff.
The only difference I see, is that Ultra 1 has a lot more range. So that makes it better in my book. Correct me if I’m wrong.
First part of that thread is a little silly imo. I mean no one in their right mind will mash a random ultra.
Second part, ok. I can see that. 3 frame reversal ultra can punish some pokes on block. Sounds cool on paper. Then again, I can do the same with Ultra 1 but on reaction. Even on block, Ultra 1 is only a few frames slower than ultra 2 so most special moves blocked are also punishable with Flying Giga Buster.
Also, if you understand frame data you’ll understand that Ultra 2 can only punish normals and moves that are at -3 or more disadvantage on block. In other words, mostly heavy attacks and a few medium attacks. Doesn’t take a genius to figure that out does it. But see those same normals are -6 or -14 and thus can also be punished by Ultra 1.
So that doesn’t convince me in the slightest. I still have 80% more chances to land flying giga buster simply because of its longer range. Seriously, in a match there will be dozen of situations where Ultra 1 could’ve hit but you lack the range with Ultra Spark (vs far zoning, vs far whiffs, backdashing, far taunts (lol), back jumpers and far neutral jumps etc.).
And for the Ultra 2 doing more damage argument: yes it’s true. But really there’s not much difference. I still prefer twice the range over 30 more damage.
tl;dr. Thanks but no thanks, I still prefer Ultra 1. Then again, it might be because I have godlike reaction. :3
You can blow up safejumps with U2, with U1 your opponent can neutral jump on reaction to the ultra flash and full combo you. Making yourself less free on wakeup is a big benefit I think.
To Vulcan… U1 is a piece of crap that can only punish fireballs correctly or other launch out of the blank special moves. Any characters that can modify their jump will give you a real problem. A medium and a low poke cannot even be counter. Sakura can give you a real poking problem if she wants… but with U2 a simple poke is highly punishable.
U1 work great when it works… but most of the time it doesn’t… still, it punish teleportation quite well.
