If you really want to play competitively I’d suggest getting into a game that has a scene near you. Even if it isn’t your favorite game the community aspect can really help you enjoy the game. I’d also suggest trying a game that interests you, for whatever reason, could just be the visuals or the feel of the game. All that said I think you should try Virtua Fighter 5 FS. It really isn’t that daunting a game to pick up and start playing and the game can teach you some good lessons about decision making. There aren’t a ton of characters, 18, there aren’t a ton of resources to concern yourself with, just a life bar, and the jump from character to character isn’t massive. Once you understand how one character works you can move to another and you’ll already have an idea of what to look for and what you’ll want to do.
Head on over to the regional matchmaking section. Find out what people are playing locally. Join them.
As long as you have local competition, you are probably on the right track.
If you are still new, you shouldn’t post advice in the newbie dojo.

My advice, like in all the other threads like this is, if you can have access to the game (renting them, ask a friend, etc) try them and find the one that fit your taste better.
[details=Spoiler]Now, i love P4A, and i think that is a really fun game, plus it has a great netcode, between SF4 and P4A, i say P4A, also, the game is very beginner friendly.
But that is just me, again, my advice is try both of them and find the one that you like more[/details]
