Which fighting game has the most INTERNATIONAL base?

Thanks for clearing that up for me but there was no reason to double post it.

It’s not about piracy, most people around the world do prefer to play a KOF game over a Street Fighter title.

I second that, kofers in mexico are beastly I tell you

this is also true in mexico, back in the days we played anything SNK/capcom but for some reason Kof was the only one who stayed. People just like it a lot.

edit:oh yeah and metal slug, that shit was fun too

KOF is extremely popular in Singapore too, especially 2k2. Second would probably be Guilty Gear. We’re a small country tough so I guess popularity here it doesn’t really matter much to the world.

KOF and tekken. But then there are the Niche followings like the 7 people who play 3S in korea, they even have their evo videos on youtube to see who gets the plane tickets. The people who play SF2CE and such. But the thing about KOF in korea, is that I hear most people still play the 97-98 versions. Im not sure why except for maybe the dream match factor. I guess I’ll allow Dark Geese to elaborate on that. Of course, I saw some korean message boards, and alot of koreans were interested in Sf4. Probably due to the original 8 coming back.

Then there is tekken, which is huge and not just korea. But in korea it’s a phenomenon, all those guys going to SBO and shit. It’s huge deal, I think tekken is a more valid popularity because people will play all the new versions that come out and such. But with stuff like KoF and Sf, they still play the old school versions. Which isn’t a bad things by all means but they don’t want to change, so it’s more of a they like the specific game rather then the whole franchise.

Here are some videos of different countries and/or territories playing MvC2. I hope it is OK to post them in here, since it makes a point:

I’ve seen videos from Hawaii, France and maybe a couple others as well.

And as FortKnox stated, MvC2 is easily the biggest fighting game in Brazil - tournament wise.

Since people are counting whole companies or series instead of single games, MvC seems to have some online following in dozens of countries, but I don’t know if that counts.

I think a better idea would be just to ask international players about what games are popular on their own countries. A poll can be nice, but the results mostly reflect what srk members think is played in other countries, which may not necessarily represent the whole truth. Most brazilian KoF players dislike anything past 2002, for instance.

What do they play in africa? Seriously i have heard of 3s in nigeria and south africa but not much else.

There seems to be a good KOF scene in Morocco, but that’s all I know.

I live in Chile, have traveled to many countries in south america, been to many arcades and asked/met lots of people. Nobody plays the sf alpha series cause they all agree that it’s boring/shitty and only sf’s they would play are sf third strike, mvc2 and by a lesser extent sfce for old school feel. Not hyper fighting or super turbo because I’ve never seen a cabinet of those in my life over here, I guess they were harder to pirate or to bring/buy, dunno. Very few people liked Tekken5 and only play ttt. By far the most played games are KOF98 and KOF2002. Here in chile there are also extremely good players at Mortal Kombat series, I wonder why.

I disagree with those who say kof is popular due to botlegs. You can find almost every game over here, except for the GG series which is very rare. It’s popular because people find it tons of times more fun than playing sf. You get to choose 3 characters, which adds something valuable to gameplay, something that makes the game deeper and a lot more enjoyable, just like TTT with it’s tag system which arguably makes it more fun/better than t5.

Here, most people choose random at kof98, it’s like it is that kind of game where you simply choose random and have some fun. Kinda the same thing at ttt, where thanks to the tag system the game is more forgiving for not choosing top tiers, you have better movement than in t5 and can actually dodge shit and fight back with lower tiers, or choose a decent tier and a lower one but still make a good combination of characters for specific reasons, etc.

I really believe that the states is simply biased towards snk due to it’s shitty market penetration. Once I went to the states and almost every arcade I went to was full of big and shinny simulators and lots of stupid machines that attract soccer moms with their little kids and shit, but almost no fighting games.

Like stated before, in Brazil, MVC2 is the most competitively played fighting game, believe it or not.
We have some players who do pretty well using Low-Tier chars.

The KOF players mostly play casually.

Other popular games are Tekken Tag, MVC, SVC Chaos, SFII’CE(No HF in South America.:shake:), SF Zero 2 Alpha and SFA3.

So KoF is the worldwide winner. But what about in its home country: Japan? It seems to be popular there but not nearly as the other 3D much less 2D fighters. It barely has any SBO inclusions, and on the Arcadia magazine site it’s at the bottom of the weekly rankings. Any thoughts?

How is Japan its home country???

South Africa

Mainly Tekken and KOF

To be fair though we’ve only ever had SF3/SF3 Second Impact but say round about 2004 they started disapearing and I haven’t seen many.

I frequent a lot of arcades and KOF is probably the most popular in my region, though SFA3 and SF2CE always seems to have a place in the older peoples hearts.

Yeah but like mostly KOF and I see a lot more tourneys for Tekken… but we don’t play seriously maybe for money matches and for fun. I like to put SF3TS in an arcade and see what happens though I remember maybe 2002 second impact was kinda big but then again msh vs sf was also kinda big then but now it’s totally dead.

Prolly because of PS2 etc

But I still get quite a lot of comp in KOF. Just a few weeks ago I racked up 25wins which is quite a lot for me.

Whoa… a fellow Capetonian… wait, never mind that… a fellow SOUTH AFRICAN that actually posts on SRK? I’m speechless! :looney:

We’re in the minority boet, can tell you that much. Gotta get more SA peeps on here!

I agree with what you said about SFA3 and SF2CE, still gets alot of play but KOF definitely takes the top spot. Pity cos I suck at it

I still enjoy watching though on the odd occasion that I’m ever in an arcade.

You’ve got to tell me where you’ve been seeing these Tekken tourneys though because I’ve been just about everywhere and there’s no tourney scene in CT (otherwise I’d be there… winning )

I don’t know if SF3:TS would catch on here though. People don’t even want to play SF2CE/SFA, etc online via MAME. If you know of a few people who would be interested, we definitely need to organise something.

Soz, a bit off topic there

The country where it’s developed. Or is it somewhere else?

Hello fellow srker ct

Yeah you have to go JHB for the Tekken Tourneys and apparently pietermaritzberg? www.awx.co.za has all the info you have to do a search on that forum though I haven’t been there in a while, but tekken seemed quite big, lots of posters and discussion about the time tekken 5 came out but kinda slow now? still lots of interest for SF4 on that site though… well kinda.

I think r3venant on that awx board will play you online GGPO I’m on sucky 3g if I’m not capped then I’m getting edge or gprs. :arazz: I am more of an arcade person but I guess I should try it out someday I used to play on kali when I worked at UU NET kinda laggy but cool for MSH VS SF lol.

Erm we(CT) had a few KOF tourneys back in the day and I mean a few lol.
A lot of my friends play SC and tekken but just for fun, but no sign of console tourneys all though I hear a lof of people play UMK3, GGXX# and KOF at PC lans etc

I think when they had the world cyber games like a year or two ago we had a DOA4 tourney at canal walk CT lol but not much though.

Yes, arcade was at its best with KOF97/98/99, then PSX & Dreamcast killed it.
Moreover, no much love for SF :shake:

Geez, that far out? What a pity. Might check out the scene sometime. Thanks for the link man, much appreciated.

Awesome. Good to know there are some south africans out there who are interested in GGPO. I’ll finally have someone to play against

I used to be a regular at arcades but there either wasn’t any competition for the games I was playing (Tekken, Soul Calibur) or folks were playing games I sucked at (like KOF)

I think I’ll give KOF another shot. It’s not that it never appealed to me but I just never really got into it the way some people over here have.

Yeah kinda sucks I found this too http://www.ps3za.co.za/forum/archive/index.php?t-1261-p-2.html

mostly ps3 players though I think, I know that you could play tekken 3 in kali If I remeber correctly?

Revenant is ready anytime by the looks of it.

Yeah Kof is different I think when you’re new to it there are a lot of scrubby tactics regulars can use on people who are new to the game but once you know the game better, they don’t get away with stuff like that. I play Tekken and I kinda suck at it but I’d like to think I’m average but probably not lol.

I totally suck at SC though but a lot of my friends play and love it.

Tekken comp in the arcade is down… I guess maybe people recon if you can play it on PS2 why play it in the arcade? I don’t know but JHB seems to have a lot of tekken going on?

peru also has a SF scene, well at least SFEX2+ and EX3 (mainly EX2+) cause they love them excels lol.
