KoF followed by Tekken in Pakistan. Once again, Neo-Geo piracy and cabs with modded PS2s is probably the main reason.
So when they say KOF is the poor mans Street Fighter they literally mean it.
I kid I kid.
I’m just thinking along the lines of if KOF XII turns out to be a PS3/360 title, when it comes time to thinking about porting. If that does happen, that could be a bad thing for a lot of KOF’s fanbase that has enjoyed being able to play/pirate the games on cheaper, more widely accessible hardware (Neo Geo, DC, PS2, etc.).
That won’t happen again if they go for PS3 and 360. The majority of places in Asia and South America would balk at the idea of purchasing those high-end HD systems. That’s why I’m hoping that SNK takes the time to take these next steps VERY carefully. They can make the arcade release HD compliant all they want; but if they want the following to be like KOFs past, they had better make it available on a system that people stand to have…
That’s actually fairly true I’d say. In addition, the only Street Fighter cabs I ever saw were CE hacks like Rainbow and Red Wave. Kind of hard to take the game seriously when you can change characters by pressing 1p start in the middle of the match, throw infinite sonic booms etc.
KOF’s winning but…
Who’s in second? I’m thinking Tekken maself
Man dude. I wish you could find my earlier post I made early last year. About what countries want to play. To hell with it, I might right an essay on it. Gimme something to prepare for 2nd year of college with. Get my writing hand ready.
Kof-China, Mexico, Korea, Japan, Europe, Shit probably Africa who knows.
Marvel-USA (god bless); New York, Cali, ATL, Seattle, actually everywhere, Houston
Street Fighter-Cali, Texas, NY, Japan mainly, Florida
DOA-USA, UK, Austrailia me thinks
Tekken- Everywhere…especially Tag in Korea.
Virtua Fighter-Everywhere but US. I think this game has like an award, and a section in a museum which I think someone posted about before thats all I remember.
Mortal Kombat-UMK3 rules Chile, and a few other places.
Power Stone-Galveston lol.
I can personally confirm that… but still the KOF community is more big.
lol, people saying SNK is big because of bootlegs is wrong
is not like that shit has many years. In my case it began around 2004
Except that it IS a reality.
Face it, places like South America (re: Mexico) and various places in the Asiatic region (China)? SNK found their primary following, thanks in large part to piracy making it so that the stuff was easily available. And this stuff started WAY back in the 90s, back when emulation of CPS1 and Neo Geo was plentiful, a common place practice and the main/only means for a lot of people to get to play these games.
Unfortunately, things being the way they are, if it weren’t for emulation, it’s very much possible that places like Mexico and Brazil would have never even got a decent chance to play SNK games. So in the end, the whole “WAREZ” scene was at least some what beneficial to SNK…while Capcom would develop new boards that wouldn’t get cracked for years to come (CPS2, CPS3), the MVS stayed pretty much the way it is, which is why piracy for it ran rampant as much as it did.
I mean, at least in my country is easy to find REAL MVS systems with original cartdriges, dont believe that there is 100% piracy in South America, SNK was popular before that, but as Dark Geese says, its just KOF, the other games just dont exist here (maybe with the exception of Metal Slug of course).
Really? I could have sworn that a friend of mine who used to live in Panama said that they had a lil bit more than just KOF. KOF got the most play, of course, but they supposedly had love for Fatal Fury stuff too.
As for South America, Brazil has more MvC2 tourneys than anything else. I’ve read Chilean and Argentinian websites specialized on the game, and there are vids from tourneys in these 3 countries plus Peru on YouTube, maybe more.
Also, people don’t like anything SNK or anything KoF in here. KoF 2002 is popular, and that’s it. 2003, Neowave and XI were largely ignored AFAIK. As weird as it sounds, people I know love 2002 and hate all the others for some reason.
I know many other games have tourneys too, but I’m not really well informed about that.
And this may sound weird coming from the oh so poor third world but, like in Mexico, we have lots and lots of good arcades with legal cabs for different games. Feds are pretty good at closing arcades that work with piracy and ilegal stuff, so you’ll find piracy only in underground places, small arcades in small neighborhoods.
CyberAkuma:
In fact, that’s a myth. KOF (not SNK, again, people only care about KOF) didn’t get popular thanks to bootlegs. Bootleg arcades are a fairly new thing (in South America at least). They started to appear around 2002-2004 depending on the country. KOF was really really popular since '97.
Now, the bootlegs raised KOF’s already vast dominance even more, but that’s besides the point. KOF got hugely popular because people liked it a lot, and way before the bootleg boom.
They are good…but even they pale in comparison to the ones in Mexico…
Actually let me elaborate on KOF- Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Peru, Italy, Europe in general, Japan, China, yes even in Africa, Morocco, Venezuela, Colombia, Chile, Guatemale, El Salvador, and man pretty much all Latin and central America.** KOF wins by default…**
This is true as well.
True…I’d rather not get into it too much because people are gonna have their own views…
If they never leave the country they will never see the truth…
I think one of the reasons why KOF is so much popular around the world compared to other fighting games is the fact that MVS motherboards and cartridges were (and still are) cheaper compared to other arcade boards. It makes sense in poorer countrys for arcade operators to buy the cheaper product in bulk compared to buying one of the more expensive product.
After KOF series, definitely Tekken.
As far as NEW fighting games, I’d say whenever a new Tekken is released, it gains the largest international base.
China
Japan
Korea
USA
Canada
Europe
Austrailia
Philippines
For starters… each one of these countries has a strong scene…
Sanjuro:
That’s another myth. First, if that were true there would be lots of popular SNK games around here, but only KOF games (and Metal Slug to a much lesser extent) are popular. Second, at least in my country, there were as many CPS-2 (Versus games mainly) cabinets as MVS (KOF) cabinets back in the day, yet the KOF ones started to outnumber them because they made lots of money.
Again, KOF got popular in these places because people liked it.
