You specifically mentioned Akuma and Vergil. They’re currently extra popular because they’re currently the best goddamn characters in their games. DBZ/Naruto stuff exists, sure, but then there’s also the popularity of characters like Haggar, Zangief, Q (Big Band basically is), Dudley, Ken, Ibuki, Chun Li, etc.

You haven’t actually cited any evidence other than “this is what I believe is that case.”

No they aren’t. Akuma’s always been popular, so have Ryu and Ken, because they cater specifically to shonen archetypes. They’re not always the best characters in their games, but they’re always the most popular ones regardless. I’ll give you that Vergil MIGHT be popular because he’s the best character in MVC3, but Dante certainly isn’t, and he’s also one of the most-played characters. Also, characters like Haggar, Zangief and Q have extremely limited appeal in comparison to the shonen archetypes, so if the Skullgirls devs are padding their game out with male grapplers then they’re going about it all wrong because those character archetypes are considerably less popular than the ones who fire ki energy blasts and flaming uppercuts.

Also, Ibuki and Chun-Li aren’t even male characters. What the fuck? Why would you even bring them up?
Agreed. I think umbrella should’ve been the second dlc character instead of big band.
Dante’s one of the best assist characters in UMVC3. Seriously? You just proved me right with everything you said, you idiot. Dante is not borderline broken like Vergil is, it is the consensus that he’s a fair mid-tier character who can do a bit of everything but he doesn’t really excel at anything. Akuma being a “broken-ass” character in ST doesn’t really explain why he’s still popular in 3rd Strike, SF4, and Marvel, as he’s FAR from broken in any of those games. Your original reasoning was that all of these characters mentioned were popular simply because they were the “best” characters in their games, now you’re changing your reasons to “oh, Akuma still has a reputation of being broken in ST” or “Ryu and Ken are the main characters”. Face it, you’re completely full of shit and won’t even admit it. Also you still haven’t provided a reason as to why I’m wrong about this assertion, and in fact you just proved to me that all of the character archetypes I mentioned have ENDURING popularity throughout their games regardless of how they actually play in those games, so great job, you’re defeating your own arguments before I can even get at them.

Still don’t believe me? I’m not particularly fond of all female casts either, but that doesn’t mean that I’m not incredibly fond of quirky or unconventional characters. Pretty much all of the characters I use in fighting games have some sort of wackiness to them. The degree of their zaniness varies, but it’s an aspect of them that I especially enjoy and naturally gravitate to.

I love characters like Viewtiful Joe and Rocket Raccoon in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, I love the weirdness of Yoshimitsu in the Soul and Tekken series, I play Teddie in Persona 4: Arena, etc etc. That sort of thing just greatly appeals to me.

Anime pretty boys are pretty whack most of the time. I’ll pick up a character like Stanley Whitefin ten times faster. Part of the reason I want science shark so much is because I want more of a reason to play Skullgirls than what I have now!
