Where'd this priority crap come from?

I guess people have been using this as a generic term for making normals good in SF games. But this magic “priority” doesn’t exist.

I just saw this posted in the Rock thread (it’s about punishing sagat c.HP) and my head almost exploded:

Sagat has “priority” because most characters don’t have normals that reach that far and come out in that low number of frames. You could similarly say that Cammy has “priority” over Sagat’s fierces because her far s.HK has more range and speed than either of them, and also hits more meaty.

The “priority” (which is actually a blanket statement for how good a move is) depends on 3 things only:

  1. The speed at which it comes out (execution frames).
  2. The amount of time the move stays out (to stuff anything that comes out during the move (meaty frames).
  3. The active (you hit the opponent with this) and passive (where the opponent can hit you) hitboxes of the move.

You could say that Chun’s far s.MP has excellent “priority” but the truth is that it hits really fast for it’s range (5 frames), has an amazing amount of meaty frames for a mid attack (8 frames), and it’s hitbox is amazing (her ENTIRE ARM IS INVINCIBLE, because her active hitbox sticks out to the end of her arm, and her passive hitbox stays back where her body is).

Huh? reach has nothing to do with priority. A simple jab will stop haoumaru’s s.jab and s.strong, every time. Just stand outside his poking range randomly hitting jab and you will OUTPRIORITIZE his pokes. IMO, all priotiry means is being able to beat your opponents moves when the hit boxes collide, or something like that :xeye:

Please stop saying “meaty frames” and “hits more meaty” - if you mean to say that something has more “active frames” then please say that instead. Meaty means one thing and one thing only: Connecting with an attack midway into its active frames.

People use “priority” a lot when a game is new because they don’t have an advanced understanding of what beats what in the game. All they know is that this one attack they found seems to win out a lot and they want to share that information. The easiest way to say it is that it has “a lot of priority” even though that’s an oversimplified and mostly empty assessment.

Hopefully as a game matures, people restrict the use of the term “priority” to special cases. Some games do have priority as a separate value. I don’t think CvS2 is one of those games, but there’s a lot of shit in CvS2 so it’s hard to say.

Leezy’s a pretty strong player actually (on the pad of all things too :wow: ). No need to nitpick at his posts or refer to anything as crap. Again, people don’t have to share if they don’t want to, and I understood perfectly the point he was trying to make. Whatever terms he wants to use to refer to whatever is fine with me.

Were you like Sigley and did an A-groove combo for the first time, so that’s why your head exploded?

i am so, roll->dp’in dat ass on saturday

priority = one move beats another when hit at the same time, get over all this BS, it’s slang. When I say whats up dog to someone, I don’t mean there a dog, and leezy would own you

My apologies Mr. ragnafrak…

I don’t have any idea what priority really is, if it exists. I have no knowledge of frame data, I don’t read guides and handbooks, I don’t study video tapes, I didn’t know what “negative edge” was until evo (and I had been using the technique for years). I just play the game, and use whatever terminology I hear others using. Even though I misused the term, everyone still understood the meaning. Sorry that you nearly had an aneurism, I was just trying to help the less fortunate gamers understand what was going on.

It’s a shame it didn’t really happen, though.

BTW, priority also has to do with some normals giving invincibility to a specific part of the character’s body. Kyo’s s.FK is perfect example, the tip of his foot is invincible, giving priority over most other normals…

another example is jumping in vs cammy. if she uses s.FK only, you can do the following:

  • get hit (lower priority move)
  • trade (invincibility or same priority)
  • hit the bitch (normally jumping shorts and stuff… they have more priority hence they hit.)

it still all has to do with hitboxes:

kyo’s s.HK goes straight over low attacks and ground fireballs just like we all know, but this is why, his passive hitbox is off the ground

best normal ever haha

other good (cheap) ones:

I kill Chun-li whenever she sticks out that silly far s.MP now. Don’t care how invincible the offensive hitbox is, how many active frames the attack has, or whatever. Her having to take a step forward (which moves her blue box forward as well) lets me fierce her to death.

Roll, DP all you want, but Ragnafrak pulled an epsilon and insulted a good player when they only wanted to help is all I know. Keeps the forum entertaining in it’s own way I suppose… lol.

Anybody else in this forum going to NEC on Saturday as well? Be sure to say hi and get some matches in with me. I’ll see everybody then. I’m looking for some teammates to enter a C-groove team with me for the team tourney too if anybody thinks they’ve been playing well enough as of late. Otherwise it’s ratio 4 Sagat versus the world for me. :badboy:

Sorry to do a ragnafrak to you ragnafrak but for somebody who “knows” so much about the game you sure do suck. If you’ve improved a lot ( and I mean a lot) then I take back what I’ve just said. If I hadn’t seen these matches I really would have thought that you are an awesome CvS2 player. You post with so much confidence and vigour that it’s hard to believe that you are anything but amazing at CvS2. But sadly, like me to a certain extent, your knowledge does not transfer to your game.

Now I think we should all give Leezy a chance to point out ragnafrak’s mistakes.

Trust me we know…Theory fighter warrior!

i know how games work, and yes i have gotten better (i still suck but better than in those vids, yes)

i watched some of your vids.

here’s an advice that might benefit your game a lot(for the now).

at least watch what your opponent is doing before you choose to do wake up lvl 3 super with unsafe supers. i know you’ll probably say “yeah i know, but at that moment i just felt like it.” but you seriously need to train yourself to not do it. it’ll become a really bad habit if you let it slide.

EDIT:
i just realized the thread topic and i’m off topic. but whatever. btw, way to choose to insult leezy and magus1234(another thread)

people who suck should not be allowed to post. they should get like 1 post per month. fucking scrubs. that means all of you.

Could you post some more videos ragnafrak? I did actaully enjoy those matches as strange as it me seem after bashing you for them. I like watching different matches and different people’s play styles.

don’t have anything else atm… i don’t think any matches i played at nec were recorded
