Where Did the 3D Fighters Go?

What happened to Bloody Roar and Battle Arena Toshinden?

In the case of Bloody Roar, Hudson Soft died, Konami is the current holder of the ip’s rights, so the chances of seeing a new entry of the series are null.
BAT had a port of the game released on NesicaXLive so it is getting play on arcades in japan, but outside of that, we don’t know if Takara wants to make new games on the series.
The last game that they made was on the Wii.

Sega has Fighting Vipers and Last Bronx collecting dust. We never got a port of the second Vipers game over here. Sega could reinvent Fighters Megamix as a Sega All-Stars game if they wanted.

Yea theorietically but reality is never so clean.

The issue with 3D is the initial investment is really large compared to 2D. After that it really is cheaper. If you do just a single one off game though that initial investment is hard to justify. If you already have made the investment 2D being more expensive makes THAT hard to justify.

That was my point tho, the initial over head would piss people off because the number is going to be huge.

One problem with 3D fighters is that the Soul Calibur setting has been going down the drain. It’s still better than Tekken though, because Tekken just doesn’t have any character to it at all. There’s no signature art direction, the characters are whatever, the music is random wub. There’s no cohesion, no vision, no ambition behind any of it. The new Tekken 7 version that we’ve seen trailers of is the first time in ages that I think Tekken looks good at all. And even that is heavily on level of detail, not actual direction to any of it.

They should bring back Rivals Schools and everyone is going to be happy. Funny how people thought Bloody Roar would be brought back 2 years ago.

I don’t understand, these game are 3d fighting games, what is this “Proper 3d fighting game”

He means a side-view type of fighting game that has directional inputs for moves but XYZ movement across 3D space.

Tekken, Virtua Fighter, SoulCalibur are all examples of these types of fighting games. They don’t follow behind the shoulder of a character.

That’s a stupid limitation considering that some of the attempts to expand the sub-genre have done so by changing the perspective.

i think things have just flipped that’s all.

3D was big for a while. 2D is resurgent.
I imagine sometime this generation 3D will start to gain some momentum again.

New generation of people.

The genre needs another ‘Soul Calibur’.
I don’t mean another in the series. I mean just something that has the impact Soul Calibur did.
It was a huge title that really just kind of blew people away. I couldn’t believe when I saw it on Dreamcast. That made me buy a Dreamcast actually.

There hasn’t been a showcase title like that and 3D on it’s own isn’t exciting to the current gen.

I think gameplay wise they’re also just too much to dig into for a lot of people.
VF has 3 buttons but it’s this insane thing that requires so much investment to even wrap your head around.

I think the genre needs to be re-examined.

I don’t see how Pokken fits into that criteria though. It’s a 2D fighter with a skewed camera angle + an arena fighter.

If what the OP really meant was “where did the shitty Virtua Fighter clones go” my answer is “same as where all the shitty Street Fighter clones and TMNT:TF went”.

Also, did someone just inadvertently say Tekken 5 Dark Resurrection was shit?

I think a new Star Gladiator release is warranted. SC has gotten stale.

Poor wording on my part. Those games are more geared to fans of the those series than genre enthusiasts. A Naruto simulation is great if that’s what the series fans want with Ninja Storm but there doesn’t seem much to it other than spectacle, mashing and quick time events.

That’s what I’m trying to do with my game, hopefully I’ll spark a resurgence of traditional 3D fighters.

pretty sure tekken, Soul Calibur, and VF are 3d fighting games.

then you clearly know nothing, your basing this on pure assumption Or the ol saying “judging a book by its cover” have you ever took the time to invest into these games and see what they do? Yes their been routine of license game being handle poorly but that not every game. People need to realize their reason why Eiting, Platinuim games, and lesser extinct ASW work on license properties. because NEW IP DON’T SELL.

AKI corporation well known for the wrestling simulation and Kinikuman games but knew well they couldn’t sell their games on the engine alone or use a niche IP so they partner up with Def jam records to bring us Def jam vendetta/ Fight for new York.

Treasure Bleach DS is just expanded ( or gutted version) of their Gurdian Heros engine. Same for Capcom’s Gotcha Force engine to Gundam vs and Plantium’s Bayonetta to Nick’s Legend of Korra title.

In the end new IP don’t sell as well as established ones. Expcially for fighters.

Case and point Duck tales for the nes is not some miracle of being good because the licens was handle properly, it was just megaman game re skinned with familiar characters.

The reason they work on brand products is because it’s much, much easier.
You can put something together and as long as it functions, it’ll probably sell.

The fanbase of Tekken, VF and SC are 3D fighting game players.
The fanbase of Gekitou Ninja Taisen is Naruto fans.

One is interested in the game itself, the other is interested in the game only because of its IP.

No one would be interested in Gekitou if it was not Naruto or any other established IP.

However, Tekkn, VF, SC all came from their own games. They created an IP to surround gameplay. Instead of putting together gameplay to support an IP.

I’m singling out those games in particular not license based fighters in general. I’m not a fan of JoJo but it hasn’t stopped me from enjoying the Capcom game and All-Star Battle. There is plenty to sink my teeth into with those games even though I’m not familiar with the license. It’s not dependant on that to sell the game to people. There is a solid conventional game I would be interested in even if it wasn’t JoJo. I like Gundam Vs as well and that one falls on the mech subgenre of fighters.
