That’s the million dollar question on everyone’s mind. Very strange circumstances indeed.

My guess is to get that donation money, and shape in form.

I felt like the whole hat promotion thing felt weird.

No way were they that stupid. The leviathan brain snake would be the most obtrusive/distracting tf2 hat to date, not to mention the constant clipping issues that thing would run into. I wouldn’t be surprised if valve turned it down.

That’s what I don’t get. Why didn’t they just announce that there would be some kind of tf2 cosmetic item(s) for now, instead of advertising a specific hat they didn’t even have approval for yet? Maybe they weren’t familiar with valve/tf2 and thought they would just accept anything?
Actually, at a certain point in time, SRK even had that whole clusterfuck debate about sexism in SG. There’s and unwritten rule about bringing it back ever again.
It’s good of them to offer refunds to people who are into donating solely for the hat (it’s only natural to expect a lot of the donations to be for the perks first, feelings second). This sort of unexpected event can spiral into a mini-PR nightmare, and I feel like they’re doing pretty well in responding to it.

Of course I think as someone mentioned before, whenever something like this happens there will always be a small group of people who are willing to use it to try and flame against your product for one reason or another (even if it’s not related at all). I think the steam forum thread and etc. can be a pretty good example of this.
