It is essentially when no one is throwing tournaments for the game, and there’s no serious players for it. A scene is dying when serious players are dropping off and are not being replaced by new players.
Sure, there’s an online “scene” for Alpha 2, for example, but in the real world it’s pretty much dead. Even online, there’s no one who plays it seriously for money above all other games.
It doesn’t even necessarily mean there’s no new innovation in the game. Alpha 3’s been dead here for years, but it still gets played in Japan, and they’ve discovered all sorts of crazy shit over there for characters.
There’s also the question of local vs national scenes. Super Turbo may be dead here, for example, but there’s players off in parts of Cali, so it’s still alive there. And for big national tournaments it usually shows up.
I thought people got banned (or an infraction) for saying this shit. But anyways, A game is dead when the scene doesn’t like it anymore pretty much. Sometimes games get resurrected like 3s though.
