While the arcades are deadweight for the most part other than DDR, 3-D fighters seem to be having success on the consoles.
As for 2-D fighters, it would take an act of God to see their revival.

The way fighters are going nowadays seems to be towards “arena fighters” such as Smash Brothers and Power Stone. Look at how many games of their ilk have appeared, lately; and even more-traditional games such as Dead or Alive (and, to a smaller degree, Soul Calibur and Tekken) incorporate enivironmental affectors.

the only problem with coming up with something BIG ala Sf and Mk is that we have been fed a lot of different styles of gameplay, and anything that comes out now feels like the same old shit. When Sf came out, I , a kid back then, was amazed at the concept of people fighting each other and having fireballs and such. Even Samurai showdown had its moment as it introduced a fighter with swords. Innovation is key, yet it has to be intriguing innovation.
It would take, as Dasrik eloquently said, an act of god, to re-create this type of feeling for a 2d fighter amongst young gamers. In the case of Fist of the North Star, it won’t be Huge, solely because the kids would have already identified it as
a fighter based on a anime that they haven’t watched, and cant relate to.
seems, for them anyways, like any other 2d fighter out there.
and so when we take 3d fighters such as DoA , tekken or VF, whoever provides with the most eye candy takes the thrown for a moment. Its a shame too, cause the later two are known for having a deep gameplay, yet gets overshadowed by a more market friendly game.
We all know why DoA is succesful, we dont accept it, but its logical really.
For the next big thing to come out, it needs to
Heres a lame example: Pokemons start being extremely violent against each others, and a tournament is formed, where only one can truly face the wrath of Pikachu.
Incite players into learning its deep gameplay. Online gaming can be beneficial in that manner.
The game needs to recreate this “wow, thats a weird motion, I need to do this, so that my cool move comes out” feeling that SF created and that MK used for its fatalities( which like it or not, was the main thing that got this game popular in the first place).
Im not saying that special moves like a fireball cant be qcf anymore, but that the new young gamer needs to feel the need and FUN in learning it instead of mashing his way to victory.
ok a lot of people are gonna no shit Sherlock and that all I said is a given…but this comes back to my original point, how its impossible for a 2d fighter regenerate mass interest into the genre without it being deemed the same old shit.
2d fighters need a renaissance…
is 3d fighters the answer? i dunno, u guys tell me.
^^^^go away EDIT he went away! :encore: Hi Freddy!
VF4 was, VF5 will be.
VF5 will come out, no one [in America] will play it, and then complain about nothing new or innovative in fighting games.
It would be big enough for me to be able to play good fighting games online with no latency. Revolution could potentially allow for a new style of fighting game… like the first fighting game that has less depth than Hungry Hungry Hippos.
super smash bros revolution is the next the big thing in fighting games
judging by your reply, you haven’t been on the internet very long
Exactly.
I’m not sure what you mean. Tekken has always outsold DOA and will continue to. DOAU sold like shit. VF4E even outsold that garbage. I imagine you’re talking about sales anyway and in no way is DOA ahead of Tekken or VF. Tekken smokes it in sales and DOA is about toe to toe with VF.
People are buying VF. It’s just that nobody plays it competitively for whatever unlogical reason.
You know VF4 was… at least to the fighting game comunity, hell you could argue every VF was since VF1, But the game’s I talked about in my original post had such an impact that nonfighting game players knew about them and even tryed to play them. So why vf was big with fighting game community, it wasn’t seen as the next big thing in the general public like the original games I mentioned where
I think GG has alotta things needed to be “the next big thing”. But it’s 2D. Mashers can mash and be like “omg cool combo”, people who don’t turn recovery on in training (i.e scrubs) can be like “omg cool combo”. GG has alotta depth =. Yah. It has a nice visual style (at least IMO) and if it was 3D maybe some more people would be into it.
Most of the casual people I know are into MK. It saddens me…“like omg I’m so good at that game I can do this 8-hit combo with Sub-Zero it’s like a million buttons and I can do it like most of the time I am so good”.
VR. Think that scene in The Island. Maybe tack on some Budokai in there, and that I predict will be the next biggest thingin FGs. We’re not there yet, but it’ll be that level of innovation to put FGs in the spotlight again.
There seems to be an interest in a new old skool style street fighter. It’s sad that Capcom has always wanted to innovate themselves out of the spotlight. While there are plenty of players who like customs and such, really I think SF would have done better if they kept the gameplay closer to the source (SF2) as opposed to trying to alienate thier established hardcore players and creating games without all the appeal of the old series.
I am not dogging on the newer games…heck, I play them too. But I feel that Hyper Anna SF showed me is that not only is old skool still pretty popular, and that a serious effort to figure out why the game is popular and capitalize on that would be thier best bet.
But as I have read many times, Capcom has a policy of ‘not releasing the same old stuff’ in play. It is ironic that many people on these forums feels that is what they do, so why not just do it right. Maybe a company like Capcom has greater expectations than me, so I think the best bet for a new game that can capture the majority of players on this forum would have to really be based in the rule set of old skool SF. Maybe a fan made game that is online enabled.
There is always the possibility that Capcom could also see that the 2D SF gameplay would work in a 3D space. The game would remain 2D in nature (as was proven by the lackluster SFEX) but with real graphics and solid Capcom design. I know that many people on the forum cringe on the idea of a 3D version of SF, but the franchise needs the graphics of games like DOA to make an impact in today’s market.
It is sad that arcade fighting is out of vogue, because the online fighters and the fact that lag and cheating is so easy on them isn’t helping fighting games. You can’t regulate players so online will only be marginally fun. But arcades had badly maintained equipment, so I guess the trade off is about even.
For this crowd, the next big thing will be a new IP since Capcom is showing no interest in making any more SF games.
KOF XI!
GOGOGOgogooooooooo
The next big thing already happened, it was VF4 Evo. To bad no one was interested.
Mvsc3 or Cvs3 would both be a dream but Yeah we need a new fighter for arcades. What about SF 4
