When do MAME cabinets cross the line?

I’m currently in the process of making a Mame cabinet out of some cabinet I bought off someone and the more I read about it, the more people don’t like the idea of cabinets being gutted and PC mame inserted.

Does this apply for any sort of cabinet? What defines “classic” for arcades. When is a cabinet so messed up its pointless to restore? What offends people on this subject.

I kinda just wanted to play the games me and my friends grew up with, I never even gave a second thought about authenticity.

PC mame = millions of US$ in piracy ;_;

lol besides that.

The real question is do you care? If you don’t then what does it matter what someone else thinks?

I have no problem taking a “classic” game and gutting it to give it new life… Would I do that to say a Tron cab in good shape/working order? No…I. Would sell that to someone that would appreciate it more. Anything else would be fair game to me though so it’s a personal preference.

Well yea, if it was like a Donkey Kong or Tron I wouldn’t touch it. This is a empty cab, I think was a MK3 that was turned into a Golden Tee 2002. The control panel is utter garbage, no art on it. Empty on the inside.

Some people don’t like it if you mame a popular or rare game. I wouldn’t worry about it too much. Even most rare games arent really that popular or valuable. Here is a list of the 100 Most Collected Videogames, they also have a list of rare and most desirable machines there. All in all i wouldn’t worry too much about it.

edit:

In this case I think you are good to gut it.

Is it ok to have arcade roms if you own the console version?

I would say morally that is up to you. But I would say it is not legally.
Now there is probably no one pursuing mame users at present time in the house holds. But If you used the machine to make money then…

I do not think sdweim85 is talkiong about legality with roms.

I think the big picture that is it right to gut a Arcade Cab to make it in to a Mame cab?

If the Cab is generic like A NeoGeo Cab or a Blue Capcom cab, or the random Astro City, no one would care gut the old PCB and make the cab you want. Generic old cabs that used the same cabinet for a hundred games, if any one lost sleep over you gutting that cab should just check them selves first. Now if you gutting a classic cab for a mame cab, it is a crying shame like a Original Donkey Dong, Space Invaders, Pac-Man would be gutted. Those old cabs should be restored as much as possible to give the game and machine new life (the coin mech can be left out).

Also if its some POS game no one have 2 shits about, Some Wrestling game no one remembers, Klax, Golden Tee, or something, go ahead gut the whole thing, repaint the cab and make it to what you want.

@Sir Headless VII
LOL, Nintendo VS system at #99. That Cabinet was a over glorified NES with a arcade joystick. And the fore runner to Neo Geo and and some Capcom boards.

good points so far, I read the title and got gassed up to start ranting about how they cross the line when you charge people to use them, or something like that.

If your gutting a cab, its yours, purists be damned, but if it is something someone else might want or spend good money on and in turn fund your purchase of another cab, or materials to build your own.

good luck.

lets see.

super turbo board a+b board.

250 dollars.

a typical mame pc, 300 dollars.

yeaaaaaaaah. Sorry I’m not rich and i can’t stand soldering the stupid suicide battery’s.

Although I own 2 cps2 boards, mame’ing just makes more sense. I don’t even think you can tell your running a mame pc sometimes.

If you bought the thing, light it on fire for all I care. It’s yours, not the community’s.

Notice what’s wrong with this image.

That’s right, it uses X-Arcade controls, which is when MAME cabs really cross the line.

Have to wonder though, is it really piracy when the vast majority of those arcade games will never see a re-release in any shape or form?

Just left abandoned to the dust of gaming history?

Ex: Ninja Baseball Bat Man

^^ A really fun, not-so-classic, classic obscure beat’em up.

lol the X-Arcade is the least of that “cabs” problems, and is actually the highest quality component of that POS haha.

Fuck purists, fuck elitism, do what you want with your cab. If you build it, mod it, or whatever, it’s your project. Put 300 sanwas all over the CP. It’s your project. Being the internet, you’ll have haters, and opinions that really don’t mean shit, unless you let em effect you. Apparently, some people feel they have the right to bitch about someone else’s project. I suppose that statement could be shortened down to “Some people feel they have the right to bitch. Period.”

There are good and bad ideas… but it’s all up to opinion. Do some research to see what you like, and if YOU like it, do it.

Also, this page will help show you what not to do, and if you do these things, that’s fine, just don’t post pics for others to discuss
What is this CRAP

LOL class.

True. Do with your property as you wish, it is a fundamental right. But you got to understand if you decide to go do something you must also accept the results, the out come, the consequences of your actions. Go ahead and gut a working Tron cabinet for example to turn it into a Mame machine. But if you go tell the rest of the world what you did, you have to expect some backlash from the community. Oh here on the internet, the backlash is just words, words written in tiny dancing lights on a screen. In the real world a dealer may refuse to do business with you again (big whoop, find some one else right). Or the worst case scenario, someone assaults you for what they feel you overstep your bounds (I hope no one goes that far).

I only ask if you gut a cabinet with intentions of showing it off to the community, choose a cab that would not matter.
From a financial standpoint this is also a more affordable (CHEAPER) as some of these classic machines even if non-working major fix-er-up-er like a Tron, Donkey Kong, Galaga or Pac-Man machine goes for alot more than a fully functional NeoGeo Machine or a very good condition Capcom Blue box Cabinet. I seen a Cab, wood has rot in some places, heavy cola and cigaret damage, non-working monitor and PCB, but because it was a classic treasure of a game, the cab sold for $600 to $1000 dollars. And I seen perfectly functional 4 game NeoGeo cabs with 4 MVS game carts and the cab is in great shape sold for $150. This is partially due to collectors wanting as much authenticity as possible.

Arcades are a dying part of our modern culture. A Mint condition arcade cab from the 70’s and 80’s are now considered museum quality objects by the Smithsonian. Exhibitions: The Art of Video Games / American Art

Go ahead, gut a classic cabinet for mame, but do not cry to me, to us when the community backlash comes in more ways that just little dancing lights on a CRT or LCD screen.
