What's the appeal of GD?

Because a lot of us have actually met up at tournaments, etc, and we’ve formed friendships/relationships with people on here that extend beyond fighting games. GD is a way for this group of people, many of whom have had enjoyable experiences meeting each other, to continue keeping in touch and talk about things that mutually interest them.

The effect of actual real-life interactions with people shouldn’t be underestimated, and the nature of this game and how the scene was formed created bonds, inside jokes, and experiences that can’t really be adequately summarized.

We enjoy the website, the interactions with other people we’ve known for more than a decade, and we don’t want to be restricted all the time to solely discussing fighting games simply because that was the initial spark that started it all.

Can someone here explain to me why so many people flock to General Discussion, on a website based on fighting games (specifically Capcom titles). I’ve been here since 2006, and I could never understand why GD gets more traffic than any other sub-forums.
