The reason i say it’s harder for Yun AND Yang to return is cause the way the Alpha looked (yes i know it’s an Alpha, fuck off) but Yun seriously doesn’t look like he would fit in that game based off what iv’e seen so far of SFV, same with Yang. I just can’t picture dive kick on engine, well game, seems like it would be like -20 on block. If anyone is going to return of the two, it’s definitely going to be Yun, if only one could make it in that is. (reusing my old move set argument above, even though that guy said it’s only in cross overs)
I hope Fuerte gets cut for R. Mika, need more girls. :3
The 8 world warriors and 4 bosses are musts. They should be in every SF game.
After that, I think it probably becomes a popularity poll with a mix of uniqueness, and game history. Characters like; Cammy, Akuma, Sakura, and Rose should stay.
Bringing in too many new characters without bringing back olds ones alienates casual fans. Capcom does not want to do this. 75-85% of the cast should be returning characters.
TBH I’m sick of the “8 World Warriors” being a consideration for default characters to include, since IMO every SF character now is an official world warrior. One reason I liked SF3 a lot is because Capcom didn’t do that. They took a big chance to tell a different story, and it really felt more like it was telling a story than “yeah Blanka did it for his mom, Honda is out to prove sumo to the world (It’s almost 2015 people), and Sagat STILL needs redemption from Ryu”.
The deliberate exclusion of characters actually helps create a story big time. Obviously we’ll have a few select protagonists, but as far as I’m concerned, about 85% of the SF cast is just supporting roles and don’t add much else to the game.
To phrase the original question differently to “Would I be hype for the return of most of the characters I’ve already been playing with/against for the past 5 years?” My answer to that would be “Hell naww.”
This is why Sf3 failed . This is why Tekken doesn’t do it, Mortal Kombat you name it. They keep the old while introducing new characters. Some of the most iconic characters have to be in it or it wont sell.
I think characters should be left out and leap frog sequels. 8 original and the 4 bosses as a must in every sequel would burn people out in the long run.
Nah, maybe only because people mostly played with the SFII characters back in the day because of popular ports and arcades, but Street Fighter IV and sequels reached a new audience, I’m sure now many people have learned to use many more characters than simply the Street Fighter II cast.
Tekken axed over half the roster including the MC in T3. MK4,5,6 did the same and x aims to continue that. SC5 did it, GG is now scaled down to about half with a 3rd or so of its cast being new, and one of its MC’s has gotten a near redesign.
SF3 failed because ST was still hot Alpha was in full swing, as well as the VS series, Darkstalkers, all of that was out at the same time. Capcom cannibalized itself on that one. Its equivalent to activision putting out 3 call of duties a year instead of one and continuing that trend for 4 years one of those series is gonna be forgotten about as more people are gonna be on one over the others and since its a social game your gonna go where the people are
Also Yang wasn’t his own character until 2I so theres actually been more instances where he was a pallete swap or super appearance than him being a full character
To be honest, outside of Tekken 3, none of those games are held in high esteem.
The SFII cast has a huge symbolic value, but I think characters like Blanka and Honda can just let go, just like in the first games from the Street Fighter Alpha series, there are lots of popular characters to fill their places, like Juri, Ibuki, Cody and Guy, Sakura… People won’t miss E. Honda that much.
I don’t think we can deduce SF3’s financial failure was because the original 8 weren’t in. Fighting games were dropping off the mainstream radar in the late 90s. People were getting into PC gaming in shooters and RTS. And if people really thought that any character in 3 didn’t play like any character in 2 (or alpha) then they were just too daft to notice how similar the characters are.
This is accurate to my experiences. Lots of people I knew left arcades altogether and started to hang out at LAN Cafes to play PC games. People still at the arcade were being attracted to newer stuff like Marvel, Tekken, and Soul Calibur or dropping FGs altogether to play fucking DDR and Beat Mania.
Correlation does not imply causation. No one I ever talked to said they disliked SF3 because they left out E. Honda or whoever. Its more likely that it wasn’t popular because people were more interested in the flashier stuff coming out around the same time.
Xrd not being held in high esteem? ANY MK other than Armageddon not being held in high esteem? Soul Calibur not being held in high esteem(while sc5 was my example SC itself was a redo of soul edge)? Ur done son, I want a quad of whatever that high grade potent is that your blowing like ASAP.
People found Xrd sort of underwhelming because of the low count of characters. They will forget the game once an updated version is released.
Pretty much everyone agree MK4-Deception are basically poopoo.
And Soul Calibur V was a failure.
As someone who plays Xrd I cant say I’ve met one person who plays it that says its underwhelming
MK4-Deception moved a metric fuckton of units and everyone I know who played those games competitively wishes they would do a revamp / tweak of the engine and keep putting out more because they are really fun at a high level.
SC5 was bigger than all the BB games, SFXT, T6, P4A, +R, Skullgirls and I’m sure 5 other titles that came and went last gen It had a strong solid year and a half or so of competitive play and sold pretty well to boot.
