I honestly see myself at least playing Super Turbo, 3rd Strike, King of Fighters 98/2002, CvS2, MvC2 and Mark of the Wolves 10 years from now because I think companies have given up making games like that so they will stand the test of time as the best of their kind, historically.
Yes, the Guilty Gear style of 2D titles will continue to be developed but I see games like Guilty Gear as a different era of fighting games and I think the time of new games like Super Turbo and 3rd Strike being produced has passed. I see Super Turbo and 3S staying exactly where they are, at the top of their “era” of fighting game.
It’s a bit like how I feel R-Type is still worth playing - it’s been so long now that the shmup genre has moved on to things that can’t really be compared in a way that makes you think “screw R-Type, this new game makes it pointless”. R-Type is one of the best of its era.
Tekken and Virtua Fighter are still being developed and until we have a new era of 3D fighting games, I’ll continue to play whichever is the best and most recent.
So, to summarise: I’M ALL ABOUT THE ERAS. Why are we still playing Super Turbo? Answer: Because it was the best of its era. And that’s why we’ll still be playing other titles like 3rd Strike.
Even if I don’t play on a regular basis, I can see myself pulling out the PS2 and playing some 3rd Strike with my brother, or still meeting up with friends for bouts of KOF2k2, CvS2, Soul Calibur, Tekken, and perhaps some HSF2:wgrin:
I’ll be looking forward to the day in 30 years when I’m a 50 year old dad finding my old xbox, 3rd strike and my two arcade sticks in the in the cellar.
I bet I won’t forget too much of the game over the years, I played so much 3s by now that it’s similiar to riding a bicycle or swimming - once you learned it you never forget it.
Anyways if my kids show interest in the game I’ll teach them everything I know plus give them my 100+ gig collection of match and combovideos. And then the day will come when they beat their sensei dad and will look for stronger opponents in Japan. They’ll fight all the old legends, Kokujin, Daigo and RX who live like hermits in caves at the feet of japanese mountains. Doing nothing but meditating, playing, eating and sleeping they have aquired a godlike level. But eventually my kids are gonna beat them and it will be the rise and rebirth of a new fighting game generation that finds back to its roots - pure 2d fighting.
Yeah this is exactly what it will be like…:looney: :wgrin:
This does bring up a good question. What’ll the kids of us gamers be like? Most of us grew up during a time where gaming was still new and older people didn’t appreciate it very much. I always imagine playing games with my kids and my wife scolding me for it…
