I found a list on gamespot about ps2 fighting games : ( http://www.gamespot.com/games.html?type=games&category=Fighting+Games&platform=7&mode=all&sort=release&dlx_type=all&sortdir=asc )
It gives you info if the game has only been released in Japan or also in the US. Most players in the USA have easy access to a ps2 and for the US versions of its fighting games ( cheaper to buy on stores like gamestop or ebay than imported ones ). I think that in order to build a scene for any game first of all the game in question should be readily available to anyone. US PS2 fighting games help the most in this department IMO.

Willing to play competitively :
Personally, I’m not willing to play any game besides the popular ones competitively. I can play less popular games for fun.
I often see signatures here and they have massive lists of characters and games.
I don’t know how they do it, most top players only main a few games at a time.
Anyway, I’ll play Guilty Gear competitively. Then probably pick up two more games (no more than that) that catch my interest.
I play all the games in my sig characters too. Switching between MIRA/KOF XI/NGBC is easy. I main only the Sol’s in AC. The others are just play things.
