What the game boils down to

i’ve been lurking on the srk forums for awhile, and i thought i’d pose a question for the serious gamers here.

if someone asked what go comes down to, i’d say recognizing patterns, shapes, and controlling space. and someone may disagree with me, but that’s why i’m asking you all. okay, not all of you, just the ones that’ll answer seriously.

so following that train of thought, what would you say, mvc2, sf4 and sc4 boils down to?

MVC2 definitely depends on finding the correct position to be in. It’s about strategically moving around the screen, controlling it with your assistn, and trying to setup an opportunity into a combo. At higher levels it’s about building up meter and finding the right position for a combo, and then getting the DHC. A lot of big comebacks are a result of someone just always being at the right position for counter attacks and burning meter.

3s is more about meter building and hit confirming supers. I remember a lot of top players saying “life bar doesn’t matter, it’s the bar on the bottom that counts”. And this is pretty true. Having bar in this game counts a lot, especially if your character has a lot of ways to hit confirm. For someone like Yun, having meter and having no health is a hell of a lot more important then having a shitload of health and none. Which is why people like Yun and Chun-Li are top, because of their ability go gain meter safely or fast, and how much having meter shift the match in their favor.

SF2 comes down to putting pressure on your opponent and not putting yourself at risk. Since combos do so much damage in this game, you don’t want to ever be giving up too much position in this game. Which is why you see at high levels players playing it safe and just spamming projecticles, because their trying to find a weakness in someone’s zoning pattern. SF2 makes positioning very important. Like Marvel, good positioning and maintaining it will generally win you the game.

I think most decent games come down to controlling space once all of the combos and glitches have been discovered. While people may call games like Guilty Gear combo based games, at high levels you see the players really trying to gain positioning safely.

footsies or zoning, depending on the game/character
