What the Devs say on bug fixing

I was playing with the Devs today and this is what I figured out.

Dev #1-UI artist- Said nothing when I asked him about the bugs.

Dev #2-Netcode Programmer- Said no comment LOL! He really couldn’t go into any details about the netcode either. They are also looking into the ratings fiasco.

UI artist was meh, didn’t know much.

The Netcode Programmer was sweet though. He has been playing SF since he was little and talked about how the game was made, strats, bugs, and everything in between. One of the better nights of SF for me.

Lucky. I wasn’t able to play against any of the developers last night. They might be keeping the bug fixing a secret maybe?

That would be my guess. That or they aren’t going to fix it in the near future but don’t want to say that.

From my experience working for a game developer, don’t expect to get too much information from people who don’t work on the area you are asking questions about.

It’s often like asking an Art Teacher questions about Math.
It’s just not something they follow, really understand, or can answer.
Also, the different departments often don’t sit together and generally don’t hang out together or often even really know each other, so it’s not like they might have overheard discussions on it.

Also, I think people would be surprised at the limited (if any) amount of time the devs spend player their games.
Though Designers tend to play their games a lot more than other positions, and some companies do try to hire players who like to play games.

And finally, many employees know they are not supposed to speak on major issues to the community, but to let the PR people handle discussing it. (or not handle it as the case may be)
Some companies don’t want general employees interacting with the community through forums, etc. Some are cool with it or even encourage it.

When I played with the Devs last night (BBEDev03, BBEDev02, some other guy), they made it sound as if a patch had about a 95-97% probability of happening, almost a formality.

I see your point…But you would think that they would know about fixes for the game. Especially that UI artist (not sure if he was an artist but he said he worked on the ui.) He should know something about the UI bugs.

My understanding is you get one free title update, then you have to pay for the rest. It’s in Capcom’s best interest to release the free patch sooner rather than later. The longer they wait, the more this 0 ranking bug, the player match disconnects, the broken health bars, black screens, lack of music will just fracture the community. I’ve already noticed a major drop in ranked match interest as of last night and people are still learning about the bug.

I don’t think they should bother trying to fix any of the little shit if it’s a one-shot-only type deal.

If it’s a matter of the patch happening or not–and they can only do so much with one patch–they should just focus on the very biggest issues.

Almost none of the already-found bugs would seriously impact or affect competitive offline play anyway, and the online ones are mostly just annoyances, inconveniences, time-burners… but maaan that Vega desynch glitch is getting to me. It means there’s hardly any practicing with and/or against Vega online.

I would not complain about any other bug in the entire game if they fix that, and the random disconnect screens other people have reported. I haven’t seen it myself but it sounds kinda bad. Message pops up mid-game saying you’ve been disconnected from the network, brings you back to the main menu… even if you were offline. Ouuuch. Maybe it won’t happen if the console’s internet connection is removed?

That baffled me tonight.

I can’t believe how fun this game is to play even for a MK scrub like me. They’ll fix it… or there is Street Fighter god. =)

Some dev employees keep more track of the game than other, also some have a better understanding of faculties in departments outside the one they are hired for.

But where I worked the artists were generally the least tech savvy of the bunch, and also the least likely to actively follow the game or player games in general.
I’d expect the UI artist to have all kinds of info regarding the art and layout of the UI, but I expect they don’t understand the technical aspects and likely don’t follow the games community and latest programming bugs.

Even those plain ports of old games like galaga are getting patches (i don’t remember if it was galaga specifically, but i do remember plenty of old ports making me downloading patches the first time i booted them). Even fatal fury special got a patch, even HF and the beta got a patch.

Frankly, at this point, i’ve seen betas with less gliches than this, this is unnaceptable no matter how much you love SF. Don’t be a fanboy. Really makes me wonder what the fuck the QA team was doing, most of these bugs aren’t even online specific.

I’m not a fanboy, I’m an actual dev on complex projects - stuff you probably have used, since over a billion copies have shipped.

I played last night for two hours and only ran into the Ranking bug, which I’d bet is a unique new problem that had never previously manifested. I’d bet that a lot of these bugs are pretty elusive and hard to reproduce within the normal playtest environment (as opposed to the crazy actual world of Xbox Live). If you don’t reproduce a bug, it’s hard to impossible to fix it. Hopefully they can track these issues down under a debug build now and figure out what’s actually wrong - but any actual fix usually takes hard work and great insight to fix, and oftentimes a lot of luck. =\ The only one offhand that I’d raise an eyebrow at is probably the Zangief Super issue. Otherwise, hey let them show what they can fix before stabbing them.

Not an apologist, just a realist.

Yep, nobody is gonna talk for fear of reprimand for setting out info. You don’t send out info because then if it isn’t met then the community gets angry. And yep, some developers dont let workers talk. I work for a big developer and I’m free to talk to the community but not let them know what I do

EDIT Don’t know where to put this, but I’ve found another bug. When a player disconnects on you and you go to msg them, the game will create a room for you which someone else joins then gets disconnected on when you come out of the msg

-Tin-, there is a bug report thread here:

Thanks

I really hope they fix the player mode match problems.

like I’ll be next up in a full room and someone else enters the room and then all of a sudden like 4 people in the room just drop out (including me sometimes) and only 1 or 2 people are able to stay. I really, really hate this bug!
