I’ve been playing fighting games all of my life starting back with SFII. However, I have just recently started getting into them more, and getting into them more on a competitive level. That’s not to say that I’m great at them or anything (I still have much to learn). I play them primarily on the Xbox 360 now. But I also have a PS3. Now I’ve noticed that a lot of tournaments use the PS3 versions of the game. Is there a reason for this? Or is it just a console preference. Will playing the 360 version make it difficult to play the PS3 version if I played at a tournament? Do the games run better on PS3 or what? I don’t get it. I have heavily invested in my fighting game collection for 360, I have a arcade stick and everything. I’d like to not have to switch over to the PS3 versions if possible.
The simple answer is, 360 is more strict about what controllers work on it. Many people have PS1/PS2 sticks, and for a long time they could not be used on the 360(becuase for controllers or converters to work on 360, they need a security chip you can only get from MS or something - and MS hasn’t allowed any converters to be made I guess). The PS3 on the other hand takes any usb device, including usb converters, so it was real easy.
Now there is a PS2 > 360 converter, but it still requires you to connect an actual 360 pad to lend it’s security chip. So still a bit annoying, and more expensive.
Also, sticks made for PC or built with the chthulhu custom pcb will work on PS3 but not 360.
Also again, the 360 pad is awful.
I see. I’ve been thinking about getting some of the fighting games I play for PS3 as well, and a stick for it once I get some spare money. Thanks for the quick response.
PS3 get used a lot because of Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection. Before T5DR, there was no reason to get a PS3 or 360, in terms of fighting games anyways. So PS3 got an early foothold, plus there are a lot of good PS2->PS3 converters, so people don’t have to buy new sticks.
Buuut, PS3 do have some problems. The PS3 version of T6 runs too fast. There’s also a speed difference between the PS3 version of SF4 and the 360 version. And there might be a speed difference in BlazBlue. I think HDR also has some problem on PS3 too.
Things might be changing. At least in my area, everything is on 360.
Wow, I didn’t know about all of that. I prefer Xbox Live to PSN and all of my friends have 360. Plus I’m a huge FPS fan, so that was why I bought the 360. I mostly got the PS3 for blu-ray and PS3 exclusives.
There are differences between the 360 and PS3 for SF4, but they aren’t as drastic as you would assume.
