What Stick/Controller Should I Buy? Read the Guide on Pg 1 Before Posting

Thanks for the reply guys.

I’m guessing you guys are talking about this one http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FC1UH82? Unfortunately, I don’t live in the state so it cost around $125 when I order it on Amazon (including priority shipping fees). That said, this is the cheapest one I could find and it’s still under my budget so I don’t have any problems getting this stick if this is the only choice to go for.

As for Hori V4, I’ve tried searching for the cheapest option available however everything is over $200 so I think this is out of option… I also tried looking for TE and Qanba before and, I’m not quite sure about it as well (all of the TE models were over my budget and Qanba has some technical issues according to various reports/reviews).

Ultimately, is Mad Catz Pro the best option at the moment? The other sticks such as Hori V3/V4 is tempting as well but when compared with Pro, I can’t see any of the sticks outweighing their pros.

I would go for the mad catz pro hands down given your wants and budget.

The madcatz pro is really comfortable for me, and its not that hard to do basic mods to either. I’m sure you’ll like it. Comfort wise i don’t think it’s any less comfortable than the other sticks you mentioned, barring personal preference. Plus it’s compact, which can be handy.

Just thought id give my 2 cents

Alright I’ll give this stick a try.

I wasn’t able to make a decision quickly as Hori sticks (V3 kai and V4 particularly) are also temping. With a lot of good reviews, it was more difficult to decide whether to go for V3/V4 or Pro.

That being said, just want to confirm:

  • Is it actually compatible with PC?
  • How easy is the modding? I’m thinking of adding different background image and changing color of the buttons/ball-top. Does it require advance techniques such as soldering?
  • Since its for PS3, I’m guessing it won’t work for PS4?

Thanks again.

Speaking for the pro, modding is not hard but its not the most roomy, so heavier mods may be harder. But the mods you mention are super easy, and don’t require soldering. As for changing the art, you just have to peel the sticker off the top, which is annoying but not hard. Adding a plexi gives you the ability to access the stick from the top, since when unmodded one can only have access from the back. I’ve heard that the PS3 model works with pc from forum members here, but since i own the X360 one myself, i can’t confirm that. I’m not of the opinion that the V3 is worth the extra money, but if it looks/feels nicer to you I don’t think you’ll regret it, since it is a nice stick. Its heavier too which is nice.

As a super subjective personal note, i really like the feel of the Pro. The slanted surface feels nicer to me than the V3’s.

(sorry, i can’t be of much help for the ps4 compatibility, since i own neither PS3 Pro nor PS4)

Hope this helps a bit

Thanks mate. I really appreciate your help.

That said… I wasn’t able to order Pro yet as a lot of people are convincing me to get the V3 or N3 over Mad Catz.

Argh this is giving me a headache… I’m one of those people who are indecisive and have no firm decision when it comes to buying stuff.

Brand wise, they are both on par with each other. Both got Sanwa parts (unless yo go with a Fighting edge or V4)
and the PCB quality on part and they are all on the market common ground with the exception of the TE2.

Obviously you going to get folk who prefer one brand over another. Its the old Coke vs Pepsi dilemma.
At the time of this writing Mad Catz has more modding options as there more aftermarket parts specially with the TE series.

What should influence you the most is personal ascetics/style/taste, modding options and Price.

Thanks Darksakul.

If you don’t mind, I would like to ask personally… Disregarding only the budget while considering other preferences I’ve listed above, between Mad Catz Pro, Hori V4 Kai and Hori N3 SA, which one would you choose?

Well I supposedly having the Hrap V4 being delivered today to my house

Looking for the best 360 6 button fight pad with a RELIABLE dpad. None of the madcatz one worked out for me. They all crap out after a couple months and even after 3 weeks or so certian motions on the left side just doesn’t come out sometimes.

I REALLY want the hori 3 ps3 pad. But it seems it doesn’t work with any of the ps3 to 360 converters. And with all tournaments on 360 now im stuck…

There really isn’t any on the market unless you don’t mind doing ALOT of modifications to a Xbox 360 controller and another controller which you want to gut.

Hi, I’d like to buy my first arcade stick. I’m not sure what I want, or what kind is better and the choices are a little overwhelming. So I’d like your help  My price range is around $100-$150 because I’d like this to be really the only one I’ll need to buy, if not at least for a few years.

In a perfect world, I’d love a great stick that has a good Juri design on it, but it seems the only stick I can find like that is from Ebay and I’m not sure I trust it.

I also play on PC, if that matters at all.

Unless you located in South East Asia, avoid it.
Shipping alone is too high.

The Mad Catz store has the Fight Stick Pro for $99 +$11 Shipping (in the US)
PS3 version - http://store.madcatz.com/Mad-Catz-Arcade-FightStick-PRO-for-PS3.html
Xbox version - http://store.madcatz.com/platforms/xbox360/Mad-Catz-Arcade-FightStick-PRO-for-Xbox360.html

Do either of them work on PC? And are they actually worth it? Because I’m not super keen on the design so I hope they’re at least good.

The PS3 version uses generic HID class PnP drivers

Uhm, sorry I just don’t know what that means.

Translation: Yes.

Thank you haha. Ordered. Thanks for the help fellas

I should have gone in more detail.

HID = Human interface driver
PnP = Plug and Play.

PS3 wired controllers uses a very standard generic driver that almost universally used.
This ensures a (almost) guaranteed compatibility with wired USB controllers.

Even many PC USB controllers that are not intended for PS3 would work on the PS3 with PS3 games.
Like clone USB SNES and Saturn game pads (although they lack a Home/PS button).

It also how the PS3 support is so easy for the PS360+, Cthulhu, Cerberus and many other 3rd boards.

So yes, barring a few exceptions (like UHCI protocol only boards like the older Mad Catz TE line) PS3 controllers should be universally accessible on PC.

Xbox 360 controllers should work on Windows PCs as well, BUT there are people with issues running there favorite xbox 360 stick on there PC. So as now with the Mad Catz Pro “Fight Stick” the PS3 version your best bet.

I’ve often wondered about that. It kind of blows me that Microsoft uses a proprietary usb driver for their consoles. What do they have to gain by doing this? More control over third-party manufacturers? Do they just enjoy limiting their customers options? People used to be forced to buy two different arcade sticks despite both of them running via usb just because Microsoft couldn’t use a universal free software usb driver like Sony. At least in the ps2 era it made more sense but these days it’s a bit ridiculous. Why even have usb as the standard if everyone’s going to have proprietary drivers that are incompatible with one another?
