What software for GIFs?

Hey guys, I’m seeing a lot of pretty high quality gifs with lots of frames on this site and I was wondering what software/settings to use to create these. I can make avs myself, but compression is always a problem for me.
Please help me out. Thanks.

adobe imageready is a popular choice

i would like to know about the settings too

i use adobe imageready CS2.

to keep an av under the file size limit, you can alter the number of colors and / or you can play around with the “Lossy” value. an av with a high “Lossy” value is really grainy. in other words, the quality isn’t good. consequently, most people want to have an av with a low “Lossy” value.

in conclusion:
[] less frames used = smaller file size
[
] less colors used = smaller file size

higher “Lossy” value = smaller file size
i’m pretty sure i picked up all of this information from Yeah Dood 120%. i vaguely remember him posting somewhere in the IMM forum (here).

 Exactly what I was going to say, str[e]ak.

:wonder: One more thing about the Lossy option, you can sometimes add up to 10 on the lossy with little or no quality loss but cut off some file size in the process. I usually mess with the lossy if I have an avatar that’s just over the file limit and want to squeeze it in without cutting frames or what-not… dood.

I used Jasc Animation Shop for years, but now I generally stick with Image Ready.

The trick to compression is like others said… less amount of colors and frames. But another thing to think about is how much is being animated. I could have an avatar that’s 50 frames long, if the amount of pixels being animated is very small. Like say, tiny text… or a small 8-bit megaman sprite breakdancing for example.

Thanks guys! I’ll try it out soon.

yeah to add to this, that is why you see people with sprite avatars that seem to go on forever, but you can only get like 5 frames of animation if you want, say, scenes from a movie clip.

GIMP

I’ve always wondered how you guys did it too. Now ima try it too. I always thought you used Pshop…

you use photoshop to “make” the frames and then theres an option which is like “edit picture in imageready” where you can go make the frames of your animation from the layers of your picture

at least that is how i do it

Oh ok. So all i need to do now is get my hands on imageready and im set.

Most frames I ever squeezed into an avatar: 119

See Adam Epstein

…seriously.

I’m using JASC animation shop…

 119 frames that is awesome
