What makes an anime game "anime"

no, its not. it featured only 1 female character.

Anime games are games with little girls and airdashes. They have stupid power up moves and there is always shit flying around the screen. Theyā€™re fucking weeaboo faggots. Iā€™m gonna play Marvel

Anime game is usually a buzzword that is either a passive-aggressive shot at niche fighters or the closest people have gotten to calling games like Melty, GG, and BB a single recognizable term.
Ignoring stuff like KOF/AOF/Fatal Fury and Darkstalkers which influenced a LOT of the genre are definitely taking a lot of material from 80s and 90s Japanese animation.
So pretty much unless you only play like pre-crossover Marvel, Virtua Fighter, and Mortal Kombat, considering the variety of animation aesthetics, everything is goddamn anime.
Even Skullgirls, regardless of creator intent, Iā€™d definitely would put a slant to stuff like early Sunrise, Tatsunoko and Go Nagaiā€™s works that were heavily Western influenced than anywhere between Fleischer Studios and modern Cartoon Network directly.

VF is an anime game. Seriously.

is there a light novel game genre? iā€™ve never even heard of this

i guess technically melty blood would be one, too

so amend that to

capcom games / marvel = anime fighter
kof = anime fighter
tekken = anime fighter
vf - anime fighter

bb/melty blood = light novel fighter

gg/arcana heart = regular fighter

When people say it they basically mean air dashers that arenā€™t marvel. So no ground based footsie games. They should just call them air dashers though.

Can everybody air dash? Does everybody look like some japanese cartoon? Thatā€™s an anime fighter.

Anime means animation so any 2D fighter.

So being that potemkin and tager canā€™t air dash, that means that GG/BB truly arenā€™t anime.

Thx, I think I get it

Why do anime fans on this site STILL get butthurt over this? Shut the fuck up.

how good you can get at it without playing other people. easier that is, the more anime it is

VF4E! Man that AI was sweet!

At the end of the day theyā€™re all fighting games so why does it matter?

I think it has more to do with the way the game looks, as well as certain playstyle elements. When I think anime game I think Blazblue, Persona 4 Arena, Arcana Heart, and even Skull Girls. For the most part, the games are highly stylized, focus on fanservice (I would say that Persona 4 Arena didnā€™t, but its based off an existing franchise), and most (or all) characters are capable of air dashing. Honestly, I think the over the top fanservice is what gives most ā€œanimeā€ games a bad rep.

ANIME!!!

I definitely see anime as a collection of mechanics, rather than visual style. I swear Iā€™ve started a post in various ā€œanimeā€ threads around FGD at least three times.

Movement is more elaborate, and spends a lot more time in the air than a traditional 2D fighter. Thereā€™s often a chain system of some kind and rather drawn out combos. Usually more subsystems and meters to manage, possibly some character specific mechanics thrown in for good measure.
A game can have a few of these things and not be anime to some, ā€œanimeā€ is totally subjective, and I might draw the line at a different point than you would.

However, my line absolutely encircles the Vs series in its entirety. Marvel is totally anime, 1, 2, 3, whatever.

The more important question is, why do we care. Theyā€™re all fighting games.

Youā€™re the only butthurt one in here. The tears in your eyes wonā€™t let you see all the sarcasm and jokes.
