Kinda, I guess. My Smash knowledge is severely lacking (perhaps worse than your Tekken knowledge). I suppose I’ll let you decide. Back in the Tekken Tag days it was a Mishimas tool for both offensive and defensive pressure. On a downed opponent one could wavedash, and due to a glitch or short sight on Namco’s part, low parry during the wavedash. Combine this with both a low attack (hellsweep) and a mid (Hei’s EWGF, Jin WR2, Kaz’s Twin pistons) and a good wavedasher had the potential to be really solid.
Luckily it’s been toned down since then and no longer has that defensive capability. Hell it’s really not even necessary anymore.
Mainstreet Ryu the 2nd was Japan’s top ranked player (first tekken lord iirc) and his wavedash is rather slow at times(albeit accurate/consistant).
From what I’ve seen though, wavedashing in Melee is probably (definitely?) more useful than wd’ing in any tekken.
only reason to play on pad, is when you suck at hitting 2 or more buttons at the same time and you have to button map button combinations.
imo be a man and play on stick.
now as far as fanta stick vs sanwa goes. fanta sticks def feel much looser than sanwa sticks, it’s a weird feeling playing on one. I perfer my namco stick and the sanwa jlf norm.
Philippines has a pretty healthy arcade Tekken scene. Granted no one who plays arcade Tekken here has enough money to actually compete abroad (although Namco is nice enough to toss us a few tournaments every now and then).
But yeah, JLF sticks here, which is funny since SFIV cabs here have Korean sticks.
Sidestep and backdash have never been so important in any tekken game before 5.
Tekken 6 - Is definately a different story but I am most likely gonna be using a ps2 pad.
A lot of pad players are able to play at an equal level on both sides, through out my years of playing tekken i can definitely say that A lot of stick players are side depend.
you don’t have to explain anything about button buffering as I’ve known about that since t2. most tournaments I’ve gone to, I’ve had to wait for player to setup their shoulder buttons. this is all across the east coast and some midwest tournaments. it’s safe to say button mapping is not banned from all the experience I’ve had. And yes I know the topic is about tekken, otherwise I wouldn’t have posted in a thread about tekken, talking about sticks/buttons specifically for tekken… Don’t assume because I post on a capcom based forum that I only play capcom games.
Then why tell him about it if you dont know jack shit?
It depends, Alot of people like bat tops, Alot like balltop. But most settle on japanese buttons. And by bat tops I mean the small korean style bat tops.
lmao you assumed that I was bad because I made fun of pads players not being able to hit more than 1 button at a time. lol. I can assume too, since you joined srk in june of 09, I can in fact say your bad at all fighters. especially at tekken since you are rocking a rufus av, while trying to sound like you know anything about tekken? Am I close? oh well either way. this convo is over.
yeah thats what I assumed. Because I’m right. Any tekken player could read that statement and think the same thing too. In saying something like that, you make yourself such an easy target. By the way, what place do you place in those “tournaments” you go to???
Just wanna put my two cents in. Filthy stated that Qudans (best Devil Jin!) uses pad. (something I did not know I thought all koreans use stick lol!) I remember hearing a rumor that this guy has carpal tunnel syndrome. Over the weekend I decided to get the rust off with some 5.0 matches with friends. Mind you, I play a lot of SF4 nowadays. I have come to the conclusion that that damn PS2 pad has given me blisters and achey joints when playing Mishima’s on pad. Maybe it’s my old age thats getting to me. My props and a number to a joint specialist go out to all the Mishima pad players.
I’m pretty sure originally, like other Koreans, he used stick. I believe it was only after he developed some trouble with his wrist (I’m assuming this is that carpal tunnel) he tried pad (successfully). He can be seen using pad in Electric Cancel 6 or whatever number it was in a T5DR tourney…it’s on youtube.
Pad gave me such side dependency that I couldn’t electric on the 2p side .
Does Qudans really count as a pad player? I’m sure any tekken player can use pad if they have to but does he really prefer it over sticks?
All this pad talk reminds me of the early marvel scene. For a while, there was a number of mvc2 pad players since the game has 4 normal buttons and 2 assist buttons which is convenient for DC pads. At the time, only things available was mas sticks and that generic hori stick and not many places sell them since mas sticks weren’t “official” products you could buy at a video game store. Nowadays, most mvc2 players converted back to sticks.
Pad gave me such side dependency that I couldn’t electric on the 2p side .

:annoy: Thats funny because it’s in reverse for sticks if you watch those light dash tutorials they always tell you to start on the right. On pad my left side was stronger. I’ve played just about every fighting game known to man and from what I gather Tekken is an awkward game to play. Lets not forget the dirtiest fighting as well. There’s a saying that goes “There’s nothing like Tekken”
BTW Does anyone recall in T4 a warning that recommended you not to play for extended periods of time
