What it will take to put Skullgirls on the main stage at EVO next year

“Skullgirls Are Not Dead”

The people thinking that SG is dead are not familiar with side tourney numbers for Evo. A 102 person side tourney at Evo is fucking spectacular.

I think the best thing right now is chill back and have some kind of volunteer thread where we actually organize ourselves to make content. People can volunteer the different skills they have an dedicate time to the project. We can give it a cool name or even something silly like “Making Skullgirls out of men. Step 1: System mechanics.”

If we prep for it for a good month we could have weekly content on the front page of this site. Best part is that d3v is a front page write; so we can just have him put his name on the final product for the week so that it can get posted in the front.

We are at the point where we KNOW what the community needs and/or could use. So should just get this thread closed and get another one started where we actually go HAM on getting them done.

You gotta understand, though, mainstage EVO games BY DEFAULT will have very high numbers BECAUSE they are mainstage games. Many of the people going to EVO have these games plastered in their faces through the various announcements and ads and banners and whatnot that tell them "this game will have a tournament at EVO. Side tournaments do not have that.

So a game jumping up to 1200 isn’t as big a deal as you’d think.

The question isn’t. Dying, but making it to evo next year. Now you can argue that that’s an impossible or shortsighted goal, but the only real answer to that challenge is a lot of event participation

I’m almost 99% certain that the only reason d3v made this thread is because dudes think the game is in a slump if it doesn’t have SF4 numbers. Before SF4, NOTHING had SF4 numbers. The highest game was Marvel and at around 200 or 300 (please somebody chime in with actual figures). Aside from that, this game would’ve been considered to be incredibly healthy pre-SF4.

The problem isn’t a lot of event participation per say but that the community needs to get bigger so there are more people total who would choose to attend a major to compete. If we grow the community we would start growing the overall numbers that go to majors. If we wanted the game to make it at Evo, we would focus on growing the scenes on the east/west coast first and then on the inside. Most events are taking place on those two sides of the U.S. as is. So if there are hella people then showing up to events on those two coasts then it might as well look like there are hella people in the community regardless of the actual number.

Aside from that we need to just enjoy the game and put out material that makes it easier for people to jump into the game. Put out them match video to advertise ourselves etc, etc, etc. Either way d3v’s original post was more about growing the community than anything else.

There is another entire discussion for that tho’

You could argue that the mainstage games have inflated numbers because there are people who will play it only if it’s “in”.

EVO next year is a nice goal because even if it doesn’t happen, we’d be close and have a better start for EVO2014.

And I quote:

See the thread is named “What will it take to put Skullgirls on the main stage at EVO next year” but the discussion is about we can do to grow the community. See how that works, literacy? We talking about growing the community so it can get to that point and the efforts we can do to get there.

That’s this whole entire discussion right here.

Excepting if people are talking about, two slightly different things, there’s a lot of confusion.

I’ve always thought the melty community was the right model. Still that’s long-term, not shortterm

My best suppport i could do is buying any skullgirls dlc. more $ in the pot .

i will try and big up this game some when i move to calgary in a few months and get more peeps playing.

the best way for this game to get on the main stage @ EVO is that during this whole next year, SG is one of the years biggest games. It has to be @ EVERY major and with high attendance. If the game is simply too big to ignore, it will be on the main stage.

over the last few years, EVO has been “selling out” for lack of a better term. They simply put games @ EVO for w\e fucking reason regardless if the game has proved itself like with sfxt and mario kart on DS or some shit. Its like they’re under contract or something to run those games but I’m not really sure. Instead of the most popular fighters getting spot light time, garbage games are ran instead because of some type of affiliation with the companies. This has a trickle down affect when bad games get a spot because the the lower end of the popular games get pushed out of the spot light.

i think all it needs is a second game with a few different play styles and familiar faces form this game. like brain drain, dark dahlia, mrs victoria, sycthana and umbrella.

also people wanna see hype. so if the top players are fun to watch then its gonna become more popular. i guess what im saying is that the game needs more insite into the scene the game already has. if you can get it on streams and get to know the players, people will begin to learn the game on their own and go test their worth in known tournaments and casuals in there area.

i was at animazement (a convention held in the NC every memorial day weekend) just this past year playing casuals with one of my friends and their was 5 or 6 other people who knew the game. just the energy we had made people come and watch us play. the game is already entertaining to watch, it just has to be played at tournaments. their dont even have to be a tournament for it, the game just has to be there and people are gonna wanna know how to play. fuck, i taught like…10 people how to play just that weekend and then got friends request from them on xbox live the weekend after.

its not too ambitious of a goal to get it on the main screen at evo next year, but we have to start now if we want it to happen

idk, i have nothing against this game. i think it’s rather good from what i saw. but a few of my friends ( who are people i train with in sf and umvc3 ) have said to me that they refuse to play this game simply because the cast and the fact characters look too cartoony or goofy. what i am saying is, a lot of people seem to say the same thing about this game when asked why they dislike it. so unless they fix the game visually, i don’t think this game will really have a community to the lengths of even soul calibur 5. and that’s saying something because that game is dying.

There is nothing to fix with the game visually, that’s just called an opinion. Personally the astounding fluidity of this game has every other 2d fighter that has come after it or around its release (outside of KoF 13).

Thinking seriously, and NOT wanting to get into the ‘you know what’ debate again, you’re a lot more clued in than I am… Do you think the issues around the games visual design could actually get in the way of Skullgirls getting that Evo slot?

They seem really image-conscious, which is what made me wonder.

No. If Evolution can run a game with fatalities a bunch of titties aren’t going to ruin anyone’s day.

^^

thats a good point that you make actually. this is definately a sentiment i shared back when the game was getting a lot more time in the spotlight prior to its release, i actually really hated the artwork in this game, and just knew that the game would get a lot of questionable looks from spectators. im glad that the gameplay totally won me over and so the graphics dont bother me (as much). but at the end of the day, its still a game predominantly featuring women with massive tits that are pretty much almost falling out at every available oppertunity, and I can totally get why a lot of people wouldnt want to be seen playing this game and getting judged by passers by.

its not just this game either, i could totally see something like arcana heart 3 not ever being an evo game for the same reason (assuming it passed all the other criteria obviously).

obviously theres shit all that can be done about it now, so i guess we will just have to see.

come on now. a little bit (or a lot) of violence never hurt anybody. But the second someone shows too much skin or a gay kiss or something and everybody is in uproar about it. gratuitous violence is a load of old hat nowadays.

edit : i am trying to imagine the shitstorm that would occur if fox news got a hold of this game. cough mass effect cough
