No, that’s to go enjoy the game. The whole point of the community is to go out and play the games in person.
even so, it still requires a large amount of disposable income. most people cant afford to travel all over the country to play games.
This thread isn’t to ask the impossible out of people but to start throwing ideas on what we can do. I got a wife who just had brain surgery; there is no way in hell I can afford anything at the moment. But by the same token I could help somebody write guides, organize shit, learn to video edit and make a tutorial.
We throw some ideas together and see what we can make it work. If you have the ability to go to a major and play SG then by all means do. The overall point of SRK is to get people out of their homes to play; even if its just your local sessions.
Seriously, just play the game. Play online, practice, go to tournaments, this is how to get the game more exposure. 102 entrants at EVO may not seem like a lot, but I’ve been told that was more than any other side tournament the entire weekend (blazblue had 80-ish), so it’s clear there are people out there hungry for some Skullgirls. So yeah, play the game, and try to get your fighting game buddies into the game as well!
At some point it might be beyond helping. Event participation is what you need, and if you can’t do that… you can’t.
Doesn’t change the fact that that’s the only real way to meet this goal.
I live in a place with no majors and I still made a point of going to EVO. And I’m a broke ass college student!
If you don’t care enough to put in the work and save money to go to majors, then you don’t care about supporting Skullgirls.
The game WILL DIE if people do not go to majors. If there are no attendants at smaller majors, then the game will not make it to the biggest major (EVO).
Do you think we can keep this game going with shitty online tourneys? Get real.
There’s a nicely sized tournament in Massachusetts two months from now. Posted it in the events section. I’m going to try to go (I’ll end up spending over 120 if I do go), and I’m just going for SG. I swear to god, though, I’m going to be pissed if no one else shows up. 2013 will be my first EVO, and it’d be epic if my game was one of the big tourneys. So, please guys, make it out to every tournament you can!
I think that’s a pretty unfair statement. The situations of people trying to save up money is all different, and for some it’s harder to do than others. I’m lucky if I have $100 left of a paycheck for myself, and even then I still have to pay for gas and groceries and whatever other shit pops up, right now it’s car problems. I can’t afford to save up to fly to another state for a few days in a year because I don’t have that much to put aside to begin with. But assuming I don’t care about SG because I can’t make it to a big tournament is ignorant.
Frankly, an attitude change of some of people could help. No one likes playing with or being around someone who thinks so highly of themselves and act like they’re so much better than everyone else. I’ve experienced this, plus people being sore losers and rude winners, and it makes me not want to go to any tournament because I feel it would be just the same thing elsewhere as it is here, judging by some posts I’ve come across on the different forums here on srk. If it’s not a fun atmosphere, people aren’t going to want to show up, regardless of whether money is a problem or not.
Saying “make tournaments in your area” or whatever and then declaring someone to be lazy and not care isn’t fair either. Numerous people have tried in my area to build a scene for bigger things than SG, and each has failed. No one shows up. So yes, it is quite possible that people really do have no one to play with in their local area or have tournaments to easily go to because I’m experiencing it right now. I suppose if I got really desperate for local players, I’d put an ad on Craigslist, but honestly, no.
If the game stops being fun and only about ever winning, then to me, it’s not worth the effort to try and broaden its audience. A community should be founded on enjoying other people’s company who share the same interest in the game(s) as you and demonstrating good sportsmanship and not putting yourself out there as being superior to everyone. I don’t want to play with someone who defines success by always winning and has become so blinded by their hunger to win they can’t kindly accept losses and has ultimately lost the ability to enjoy the game. This has been my experience, as I’ve sort of stated before, and makes me hesitant to try another tournament. If we can’t show support for each other and respect one another’s opinions, views, and circumstances, how are we supposed to come together to support the game?
i care about the game, but i care more about actually having some money to do stuff with. EVO was pretty much the highlight of my year as far as travel goes. ATM it would have to be one or the other for me (EVO or majors), and i didnt really have the money to spare for evo either, hence me not drinking, gambling, living off subway and only staying for the 4 nights.
You do not understand why people motivate themselves to play fighting games competitively. It is not to win for the sake of winning. It is because they love the gameplay so much that they want to push themselves to play the game at the highest level in order to enjoy all that it offers. Competitors are passionate players who want to take the game to the next level. They don’t try to win for the sake of winning, they try to win for the sake of taking the game all the way.
Fighting games are competitive by definition. The objective is always to beat the other guy. If you are not playing to win, then you are not playing the game right. People who play a fighting game for shits and giggles tend to drop a game incredibly fast because they cannot progress forward in their enjoyment of the fame, so they get bored and stop playing. This is why everyone has dropped Skullgirls: because no one has tried to WIN at Skullgirls.
Trying to force people in your local area to play the game is a pointless exercise. You can bring a horse to water but you can’t make it drink. Even if people who have decided they don’t want to play the game humble you with a few matches, those people cannot be made to take the game seriously.
I’m not going to tell you how to save money because that’s a pretty touchy subject, but the fact of the matter is that if you don’t go to majors, the game will die. Passionate gamers need to meet at one location to play the game together. THIS is what fosters a community. Not armchair players who try to tell themselves they are contributing to something.
Uh dude don’t start ordering people to go to majors. The game will not die if it isn’t represented at every major because there’s too many damn majors (they’re not really majors to be honest but that’s a point to debate another day) to begin with. You start small and go from there. Get people to play with you, have sessions, build that up, then start going to local tournaments. Even if it’s just you guys playing at the locals keep doing it. You need to be consistent. Then you can all plan to go to a major for the game (or to help run it there). There is no rushing any of this. Some people here need to relax, we’re not going to die out. Just show some love little by little and we’ll get there.
I don’t think that’s actually true. I heard VF5 got something like 150 entrants.
I’ll be at that tournament, so at the very least we’ll have two people for Skullgirls. But yeah anyone who can make it out to Massachusetts this September, we’d love to see you there. I drive to Philadelphia/New Jersey all the time for majors, it’d be neat if Philadelphia/New Jersey drove to me for a change.
most egregious misuse of the term ‘OG’ ive ever seen
i think the fact that this thread quickly became ‘post reasons you cant show up to events’ says all you need to know about the future of this game
Is that why Thanatos is backing away?
Everyone saying this game is going to die needs to chill the fuck out.
The game is still way way to fucking new to already plant a grave for it. If the community diminishes next year this time, its safe to say it might be over for the competitive crowd. Right now its still getting a great amount of Exposure considering its an entirely NEW Fighting Game IP. Its great to want OUR FAVORITE game to strive and be on the main stage at EVO but we cant expect it to happen overnight. it will be a slow uphill battle im sure, but it will happen eventually we’re a year away. So much can happen.
I don’t really think that’s the problem. I get the impression most games have more people who just watch streams and post on forums than people who go to tournaments.
It would be nice if people lived closer to tournament hotspots it would help its growth. People not sponsored don’t travel so just build your locals and come out when you can
Seriously, the hyperbole is insane. People here saying the game is dead because it had a 102 people at EVO who went home to relax because it’s over and people on GAF saying the same thing despite the fact that Skullgirls has had more entrants than KOF, MK9 and SCV at different majors this year.
Some people here need to take a chill pill before they declare the entire Skullgirls scene “dead” at the next major like some wacko.
