wow thanks for your insight. looking forward to hear more platitudes from you in the future
If you have to ask, I’m assuming you’ve never been to one yourself
it stinks
you can’t move with out touching someone, and alternatively, people near you can’t move with out touching you in one way or another
that an of course, the fact that they’ve got to feel like a steak in a lion cage, literally wherever they go they’ve got eyes on them, and not in a “oh hey, a girl who plays, I respect that” kinda way.
edit: every tournament I go to, if there’s an especially attractive girl, you will hear time and time again, someone ask someone “yo, who’s that girl, (insert description) girl? she’s hot, she somebody’s girlfriend? (insert acts in which guy would like to perform upon girl).”
And these dudes act like women don’t have ears… Trust me, dudes, she hears you lol
The ones I been to only have like 3 birds. I’d like to see more.
The Sims.
My girl use to play that game, til she got burn’t by the torrents (noob) lol
I wish my lady did play MVC the Sets would be amazing
the stink doesn’t stop girls from attending rock concerts where it can be just AS bad. Especially for rock music where the girls look great and the guys smell like raw sewage. The whole touching thing is over played too because @ concerts, its even thicker and they seem to have a good time anyway.
steak in a lion cage is true, I can’t lie but girls like that shit anyway. They don’t have to compete with other girls in a contest to see who gets more glances their way because even the most average looking girl @ a video game tournament is going to get looks regardless.
I don’t know if you guys know queen bee. I think she’s married to fugee, helped create the season beatings venue, and having a kid but originally, she was a FL tournament player who would show up to mvc2 tournaments with her BF and we treated her like one of the players. Chill, drank, talked some marvel, drank a bit more. Girls game too, in some cases way more than some guys.
I think the games just got to the point where ANYONE can play and before, they just weren’t like that. The last generation of games lasted 10 years and very few girls would spend that much time practicing to get good. This new batch of games are far easier to get into and play and have fun with so I think within the next 5 years, you will see female attendance #'s go up.
There is no mystery here. Girls in general don’t play video games. Why don’t they? Because video games in general are marketed torwards boys and men. In general women are less competitive in external activities like sports. While in sports many can attribute the gender barrier to physical differences, this isn’t always the case. Let’s look at the things women actually like and enjoy:
Drama
Cosmetics
Looking good
Relating
Women understand each other on a very personal level, while men don’t. My ex girlfriend found it odd that I have friends that I mainly only game with, and don’t get too involved in their personal lives. A female has a really hard time understanding how you can only be friends with someone because you share similar hobbies, but don’t really get too personally involved with them. Women are “all in” in relationships, and it’s very uncommon for a “hobbie” to be the defining part of a friendship for women.
This takes it back to the point I wanted to make. Video games despite being seen socially as “nerdy” are highly masculine acitivities. There is a lot of competitive heat involved in tournaments. But it is a form of relating that many many men find incredible. A woman has a hard time grasping this, and fighting games specifically may be too “impersonal” and “manly” for them. Also, fighting games take some serious comitment to become good at them. This is generally something women don’t put much time in, because women are less likely to find any value in competing.
Women can be competitive, but its normally internally competitive. you may find women more competitive with each other on ding ding personal stuff. This is why women in the work place tend to be more “catty” amongst each other, and everything they do is mainly for the purpose of outdoing other women. However women rarely put this sort of competitive energy in external and non-personal activities like gaming or sports. Sure there are female atheletes, and yes they do compete, but keep in mind many women who compete were taught that by dominant male figures in their lives. Unlike men, they just don’t start wanting to be competitive at the spur of the moment. They are generally indoctrinated with competitive things (and one competitive thing) from birth.
The best examples would be for sports teams. I know very few foreign women who has much passion about US sports, or have any real loyalty to a local ball team. However the men from the same country do adopt local teams as their own, and generally rally behind them. Women who are big fanatics about a football team for example were generally raised with the team, and again a dominant male figure in their lives got them thinking along those terms. Perhaps Justin Wong’s daughter may become a huge FG player if her father was one. But you’re not going to see a mid 20s woman with no prior interest in competitive gaming just all of sudden want to become competitive (especially with the absence of a strong male figure motivate them).

Concerts are, night clubs, etc. are a bit different though…
There other girls at concerts, there are other girls at night clubs, etc. Sure it might be nuts to butts in them venues, but, a female is way more ok with the fact that she can maneuver around other girls. The ratio isn’t anywhere as male dominated at clubs or concerts.
And girls do love attention, but, if you know girls, they love particular attention. A girl likes when a relatively attractive dude looks at her. And while the average tournament goer is a regular, every day, perfectly possible to find attractive male, the stigma around game tournaments, especially to people who’ve never been, is that there will be 800 fat, ugly, nerds with acne there.
Actually, thinkin’ about it, it’s probably more likely the stigma surrounding what a tournament would look like in the mind of a girl who’s never been, opposed to what it actually is, that keeps them away.
I agree with what else you said though, the games getting easier will likely draw a more diverse crowd, as well as the fact that they’re becoming more publicized. People actually get to see what other players look like, so maybe as more girls get into the scene and realize what it actually looks like there they’d be more inclined to try it.
Girls as a whole wanting specific attention and having to give them general attention to bring more in is the whole conflicting dilemma though.
Women in general do not like other women getting attention.
Make a female tournament = "Oh they’re just a bunch of girls"
Make a co-ed tournament that reaches out to females = “I don’t think I can play with these guys” and such
The fact that shouts of “OH MY GOD A GIRL” still exists after nearly 30 years of gaming as a mainstream source of entertainment shows we’ve gotten very little progress. that wouldn’t have happened anyway.
At this point, the only real way for the female population to get on more equal footing is to breed younger girls differently from the ground up.
My sis can play Soul Cal V decently, wants to Let’s Play with me for 99% of my collection, and favorite game is Monster Hunter Tri after my handiwork.
Get tweens like her in the higher 5/6 digit population range and we got something.
Y’all, oh and game devs somewhat
My girlfriend plays games and I’ve been around a lot of gamer chicks, none of them “get” fighting games. I’d say it’s probably the competitiveness, it puts a lot of people off, men and women, when they’re starting out because of the steep learning curve.
The average person who goes to these events are relatively unattractive males. Most males woudln’t feel as enthusiastic about going to an FGC tourney if they were full of morbidly obese chicks, for example.
This isn’t necessarily true. Women are less driven by how a man looks. While some women have a “general preference”, if you’re a nice guy, or a guy who kind of fits what a woman is looking for, they generally forget how you look. Case in point, I’ve seen some of the fattest ugliest guys with beautiful women around their arms. Something like that isn’t going to keep women from gaming events. Neither is smell, you can take every guy at the tournament, strip them down, and spray them with soap and a water hose, then sprinkle the tournament with potpurri, and you still wouldn’t get women in a tournament. It has very little to do how the attendees look or smell. It’s just that women are not very externally competitive.
wow
-a lot of people who go tourny’s are out of shape socially awkward guys
-guys who can’t talk to girls
-lots of yelling, its hot, and smells like shit because a lot of people don’t wear deoderant
-girls don’t like being hit on or objectified 24/7
So in conclusion, I blame a lot of the people on this forum who are low life fat old guys. Not hard to answer
It’s amazing how anyone on the planet could understand less about women than I do. I mean I understand nothing about women, but I know that how the guys look and smell isn’t keeping them away from the tournaments.
Because 90% of the dudes at the tournament are shit tier irl.
I’m the reason. Sorry guys.
attractive =/= physically good-looking
