So inclined to be BACKWARDS…
I enjoyed the “You are so fucked,” one.
truer words were spoken but none as GREAT!!!
Depends. I lot of billboards and signage read left to right, some newspapers do as well. A lot of it depends on the kind of publication as well. Traditional publications or messaging (like SUMO billboards) will have the “cursive” kanji and read right->left, top->bottom, but there’s not really a hard/fast rule (at least as far as I knew when I lived there.)
Im going to be there again on personal (and professional) business next week, so I can follow up if you want and “find out.”
Could the reversal be due to a western influence in the country/culture or does the reversive writing come from past influences?
I think there’s that aspect of it, yes, but if I remember correctly there is occasions on shrine gates where the kanji is left -> right, and those gates predate “western influence”
Now, it could also be that I remembered wrong, so I’ll double check because now I’m interested.
“Quick” “Dude” “Press” “Up”
At that point, isn’t it too late?
Does anyone know what Evil Ryu says when he K.O’s you with the SGS in CvS2?
Nope. Unless the Akuma player catches you whiffing a move with long recovery, or an unfortunately-timed jumpin, you can just hold UP during the super/ultra flash and you’ll be safe. Sometimes Akuma will even float forward and rub up on you for a second, without grabbing, and you’ll jump away.
BTW, I just have to say that I love how the other forums are like “Viper is a MILF” and “Wow Gen is old” but you come to the Gouki forum and people are talking about the Tao of Shun Goku Satsu and shit. That just cracks me up. “Dude, check out Cammy’s ass!” – “Does Akuma’s power come from the Ch’an Buddhist emptiness within?”
Nice post. Do you have the Kanji for annihilation that usually proceeds destruction?
Eastern Philosophy, Metaphysics and Comparative Theology have been “hobbies” of mine since about 9 years old, and I have a particular soft spot for the Japanese Zen philosophical/metaphysical constructs built on shinto and Mahayana Buddhism.
(For those interested: 2 main types of Buddhism using the indian terms is Teravada and Mahayana, the former portrays Siddhartha Gautama as a messianic figure, while the later considers him to be the first of many subsequent Bodhisatvahs, or “enlightened ones,” and that opposed to Teravada Buddhism, enlightenment comes spontaneously through "Learning the Dharma, Living the Dharma, and then throwing the Dharma away.)
While SRK generally (and correctly) places importance of game balance and performance over “story canon,” it’s also important to remember that this game is also an art form, and that the creators, artists and writers do everything in the game with intention and for a specific reason, with enough flexibility to allow for the “happy accidents.”
…this is one of the reasons that I actually find Gouki and now subsequently Gouken supremely more interesting both from a game perspective AND from a character development perspective. While Gouki is considered an evil character/monster, various capcom artworks (SFA2 gallery) and some of the UDON comic art portrays him as an individual with much more nuance and complexity than a 1-dimensional “hidden boss char.”
…and I think this ties very much into the artists and designers choice to use the kanji ?, because while “good” people consider the power he wields to be evil and murderous, these would still be the result of a subjective (mortal, lower, etc…) frame of reference… the whole light side/dark side of the force balance thing.
Anyway… probably waaaaaayyyyy too much conjecture for most, so I’ll stop for now on this.
Nice, didn’t realize that page was around, so it will be a good place for me to brush up / work on my Kanji.
When I get a chance, I’ll fire up my copy and see if I can listen/understand what he’s saying.
Completely agree, I remember at some point doing me looking into something Street Fighter that I came to the realization that Gouki isn’t “evil” in a sense, but that his power comes from a much darker source then most people are willing to accept as willingly good, and that his motives might be harsh to some but through his eyes they are correct and just due to his stance on/in life.
Against Boxer it translates to “I GOT YOUR FIGHT MONEY!”
This conversation went from a simple question to an in depth discussion on the meaning of 2 characters in a video game and eastern philosophies. In short this conversation is deep. Deep enough to make me want to start reading up on these philosophies your talking about Celestrian.
It reminds me of Darth Vader. On the surface he seems evil. However he doesnt see himself that way. He turned to the darkness to attain power that he felt could not be reached by conventional means. Yes im a nerd.
My first recommendation then is the Dao de Jing, written by Lao Tzu. It’s basically the primer for a lot of core eastern-philosophical constructs that were then spread to other parts of Asia.
If you’re interested in Zen Buddhism, then The Flower Sermon and the story of Mahakasyapa’s spontaneous enlightenment is the chronological starting point. I have a collection of “Monk Tales” somewhere in my house that provides a series of anecdotes of various monks in their paths to Nirvana.
I’m pretty sure basic info is on Wikipedia, but there’s a ton of books.
Again, tying it back to SF4/Gouki, when you start looking at a lot of these characters in these contexts, it’s pretty interesting to see all of the effort that these artists at Capcom put into the symbolic and canon significance of them. Sometimes I wish they had the bandwidth to do that will all of them, and they probably do, but for obvious reasons Gouki/Gouken hold my attention is a very special way.
I saw this pic and it reminded me of this thread:

Yeah, I have that. It’s from UDON Comics and when you bought a Gouki SF 15th Anniversary Gamepad they came with little mini insert comics. I also have the Super-wide poster (which I need to get professionally framed, its been sitting in its packing tube for about 3 years now).
