That makes no sense, a serious tournament would require a lot more effort on your part in order for you to compete in it. The reason why some bugs aren’t used and others are aren’t is because some bugs decrease challenge, others increase challenge.
You’re missing my point. The fact that any bugs can be banned is a testament to games having problems, and that taking these problems away can ‘fix’ the games. The decision on what bugs are beneficial and which aren’t are completely arbitrary and are completely at the player base’ discretion. If a player base bans ST Akuma, and I use him anyway, I could simply lay claim to the base being ‘scrubby’ for not finding a way around him. At worst case, I could say they can pick him too, so it’s fair. Now if a player base decides that it wants to ban certain other chars or tacics, and you are the only player that doesn’t adhere to this, you are in fact the outsider to their rules. This whole playing to win thing is fine and dandy with other players that agree, but theres absolutely no point imposing these rules on ‘scrubs’/people that have made their own rules. When I enter a tournament, I play differently than when I play casually against people in my dorm for instance. If they don’t want throws, fine, I’ll attempt not to throw regardless of what I think. Everyone knows that I throw a lot as part of my playstyle, but I can adjust to not using them if my opponent refuses to use them as well. If they want to ban certain characters to increase diversity, thats fine too. As long as everyone is in agreement on the rules beforehand it’s fair. It’s just a videogame, to me anyway.
I’ve considered this before, and I agree. I think most people here would agree, too, because simply having an arbitrary ruleset that differs from the norm isn’t scrubby in itself. The problem arises when a one group with their own rules expects another group who are perfectly happy with their own different set of rules to conform to the first group’s ruleset. That is true scrubbiness, regardless of the details of what the rules are. People who simply play with their friends and decide as a group to ban RC because they think it makes the game less fun aren’t scrubs (I’d say they’re pretty ignorant and not playing the game to the best of its potential, but that’s just me). Guys who go down the the arcade to play CvS2, then proceed to bitch at every opponent they face who RCs for using “cheap” tactics most definitely are. Sirlin’s absolutist “YOU MUST ALWAYS PLAY TO WIN OTHERWISE YOU ARE SCRUB” completely ignores the fact that different people play games for different reasons, and none of these reasons are necessarily superior to any others, because it’s a fucking videogame.
I’ve gotten that kind of comment, but " I know how to use it, and choose to use it cause it makes me a winner." is a good answer.
Not to start anything, but I think it’s really not cool to mess with Sirlin’s work like that even though you credited him and bolded your own additions. It really messes with the tone of the article and I can see a few sections you excised entirely (ex: the introductory paragraph, “The first step in becoming a top player…” from the fifth paragraph) without noting at all that you’d altered the work. It looks like you’re trying to say something that’s actually not in line at all with the original article in some key ways (the best example is the complete rewrite of the next-to-last paragraph as this rant on the mediocrity of the average person and their fear of challenge… this is almost the complete opposite of what David was saying), so you would be better off not misrepresenting someone else’s work. I don’t mean to offend, but this really is the sort of thing I’d get expelled from school for.
IMO what’s meant by ‘cheap’, whether its a scrub saying it or Justin Wong, is a tactic thats relatively low-risk or abuseable in comparison to the damage it deals when landed…in a nutshell.
here’s my two cents - its only cheap if the opponent does it and wins.
its legit if i do it and win.
classic scrub mentality.
team scrub 4 lyfe
in all seriousness though, sometimes I like to go to the arcade and have a good enjoyable time. I like to play fun teams with characters like Cammy Guile Ryu Akuma Juggs Venom etc… However, some dick will pick Cable. once that happens everyone picks cable. and then the games go to shit. so I have to pick cable too, because its a choice of winning or losing, and i’d rather win than wait in line for my turn again. So really I dont like playing team scrub, even tho its my best team, but i gotta do what i gotta do to win.
I mean you’ll hear ppl saying shit like, having “fun” is winning and “do whatever it takes to win - u r a scrub if u dont”. okay that’s nice if you’re at a tournament. but some ppl go play to let off steam and chill, and they just wanna play casually. dont want to deal with crap like Doom Blackheart megaman cable or other cheese masters you know?
I think the original spirit of the term was something that was very easy or simple…but it’s implied that it’s still very good (or at least, difficult to counter by the accuser).
Low-risk, high-reward, if only from a scrub perspective.
Foo it ain’t no secret…msp that issh =D
I would say cheap COULD BE used back in SF2 days when mans when low kick someone off the floor and throw and a mjor chunk of energy would come off and jump kick, opp blocks n u throw
Ummm, how am I a scrub for using MSP and shit? I didnt know all the top players used Servbot, Dan and Roll. I got a lot to learn I guess. And someone should teach Jwong some shit too, because he must be a super scrub since he uses MSP and wins tournaments with it. If you werent such a scrub then you would know that MvC2 is extremely broken and requires a top tier team to win. Everyone plays them and if someone wants to win then they need to stop being a dumbass who fuckin’ uses shitty characters so he has an excuse when he loses just becuase if he used top tier characters he would still lose, but then he wouldnt have an excuse. And yes I’m talking about you. And I know plenty of other people just like you.
so someone leg sweeping all game is “not cheap”? just asking, i remember people being called that whne SF2 came out.
Haha, how could a tactic that’s easy as hell to beat possibly be even considered cheap?
u know what’s cheap?
taco tuesday is cheap. 99 cents for a taco. that’s cheap.
Funny u should mention that. the friend in question said these words to me the otherday when I told him I was posting here.
"My definition of cheap is if someone exploits a flaw in the games programming."
Now that he’s said that I had reason to ask him if the stupid move he does with Assassin (A+K or B+K, the jumping kick thing) in SCII is cheap and he didnt have much of a comeback.
I usually accept other peoples “play to win” mentality but most of the time I only play to have fun, cause that was games were made for… having fun. and usually when I find something “cheap” I wont say anything cause I know that if the tables were turned I’d probably use it aswell. Just not to the extreme that some ppl do.
