What If SFIV Had ST Chars As "Old" Versions

I was playing HSF2 the other day (the one with the multiple versions of characters), and it got me thinking.

What if SFIV had an option for old characters, and the old characters played exactly like they did in ST or HDR? I’m talking no EX moves, no ultra and one button throws. Exactly as it were in ST.

How do you think it would affect the balance of the game? Do you think ST Balrog would still be top tier and smash the rest of the roster, or do you think the IV characters with their new tricks could hold their own?

Would you keep the same damage output for the ST characters (pretty much double what IV moves do), or would you nerf the damage to IV standards?

How do you think IV players would take to the addition of ST characters? Do you imagine endless rage mails about tick throws and cheapness, or do you think they would even pick them over the IV versions?

We had a similar discussion in some random thread somewhere if SF5 was essentially ST or HDR with the same game features (replay channel etc) as IV but with the 3D engine; if it would be more popular than it’s current 2D incarnation.

There are still a mountain of things I disagree with and dislike about SSFIV, so even if they did add ST or HDR Ken into it, I doubt I’d ever give up on ST or HDR, but it might be enough to tempt me to play it instead of screwing around in training mode when it’s quiet.

SSIV + SSIV Roster/Graphics + HDR/ST Engine = I drop out of University and play Street Fighter 24/7, lol. As for your question? The “old” characters would all suck because of a lack of focus attacks (I hate the focus attack concept but its vital to the new engine).

Also, the new characters’ damage is set up with scaling in mind. Daipan loop=death without it.

I would laugh while i walldive my way to victory over and over again.

Oh god the amount of hate mail i would get.

I would dive along side with you, in tandem. It would be a gorgeous time. DOOOOOOOOOW!!!

O.Ken all day long for me, thanks!:nunchuck:

Wouldn’t it make SF4 characters useless? The huge hitboxes, high priority anti-airs, huge damage and throw loops of SF2 characters is too much for SF4 pansies.

This is a great idea, there are a few trials on SFIV that limit the player to ST moves so I’ve always dreamt of this kind of feature being implemented. I definately think it would get a lot of fans of ST who don’t like SFIV involved. SFIV is a good game though, you njust need to accept it is different and understand the play mechanics.

nah, i just wish they add 30 more characters to the roster of ST like they did for ssf4 with different hitboxes, specials and supers, and call it super street fighter 2 turbo X 2011 edition

and yes, i’ll do the hitbox diagrams for all 46 of them

ST Throws would own. ST characters would be too fast. Their hitboxes would be too good. They would do ridiculous damage, and supers would be 10x as good as ultras.

Also projectiles would be way better. O.sagat with his 11-37 projectiles would be hilarious.

I know one thing, ST.O versions would take 10 seconds to murder somebody… unlike SSF4, every match seems to go on for days and days on end.

HDR players would bitch that it didn’t have the HDR versions of there charaters, ST players would bitch about how the characters don’t play like EXACTLY like the japanse version of ST, and SF4 players would bitch about how it totally ruins the game.

Not tryign to burst fun here (really not). I think the idea is novel and cool. But the total sh*t storm it would create in the community would take all the fun out it.

Yeah, fuck SF X Tekken, we need SF2 X SF4. Also huge shitstorm, but I guess that’s why I wanted to post, to get opinions. I don’t think anyone would use the SFIV characters if ST characters were present, which makes me wonder if the only reason people play IV is because of the graphics/updated presentation and features?

I dunno why this HDR vs ST thing exists. I got into this game through HDR, and I occasionally play ST. Don’t have anything for or against either. The only thing I don’t like about ST is how I usually get a crazy kick if I try to walk up low forward into jab DP, or walk up 2xcr short into super (but that’s my bad execution). I think the ST heads dislike HDR because it changed what they are used to. If ST had HDR character properties originally and had been played for years and Sirlin released HDR with ST character properties, people would probably still hate what Sirlin releases (simply because it’s different).

Just keep HDR the way it is & just add SFIV characters…

In SF4 the different single player trials you have to beat for various unlocks provide various gameplay variations (boosting, removing, etc. various gameplay mechanics) to play with.

One of them is an “ST” configuration (no EX, no Ultra, no dash, no throw cancel, etc.) and I enjoyed playing that version. Not sure, but I don’t think it had a one button throw (and not sure if the throw was 0 frame), and it did use the normal/special movesets of the SF4 cast and not of ST.

It felt mean that they would let me play that configuration in a single trial, but I couldn’t play it in an actual game state vs. other people.

Sagat would rape… Again…

Ken would be fun again

Have you seen sfiv hitboxes?

Old character would destroy based on that alone. The sfiv characters are generally the least powerful version of the, like ever.

Bison would be fun though

I think that’s a problematic assumption to make. The big reason probably is because the game is new, and people like new things. It’s may seem like kind of a shallow reason, but that’s probably just how it is. Presentation and graphics help for sure, but there are plenty of people who just generally like the SF4 engine. I can’t call myself one of them (I don’t hate it, but it definitely isn’t my favorite), but I can understand that different folks like different things.
