A fighting game made by fighting game players for people who want to play fighting games
I am a fan of animation and a fan of fighting games. Skullgirls caught my eye years back when the site had a bunch of the characters up on it. Over time, I figured it faded into obscurity and was a dead dream with a still standing websiteā¦then last year I believeā¦I saw the fucking announcement trailer.

From there I was hella interestedā¦but nothing prepared me for the Break downs of the gameās mechanics on ( I believe) Giant Bomb and later Destructiod by none other than Mike Z. When he showed off the games mechanics I was sold. right there. I started telling everyone I knew about it, how it was going to be amazing (One of the people I pestered a bit about it was Jet Set Dizzy ).
I think THE character that really made me smile was Peacock. I am a massive fanboy for that old cartoon style, I grew up with it and all itās violent glory.
This is probably going to be my main game with UMVC3 and KOF. It looks like a more footsie based Marvel. I love the art design also.
LOL @ Summer 2011.
I saw it on a stream and I thought that it was a game I could see myself enjoying.
Another thing I forgot to mention is that I live in Minnesota, and a lot of people know Mike Z personally here. A lot of the players here have been telling how much he knows fighting games and that he created a lot of the tech in MVC2. So itās always a plus when the game pretty much comes directly from the scene youāre involed in. Iām just ready play this damn game already, and I can finally say by by to ultimate.
All other current 2d games sucking.
I havenāt read through the entire thread yet⦠but I got here⦠⦠but⦠Ono endorsed skullgirls? I know Ravi had some interaction on april fools but⦠=/ Maybe iām not as dedicated a skullgirls fan as I thoughtā¦
Yeah Ono mentioned a long time ago that he thought the game was cool. Even Daisuke Ishiwatari liked the artwork from the game.
Well thereās a lot of things to say about the game, but I just really like that it was made with actual thought. I know it seems like Iām rambling but bear with me for a minute.
Iāve been playing fighting games for many years now, and as funny as it sounds I got started with Darkstalkers. Eventually I moved on to Jojoās and some COTA, KOF98,Guilty Gear and CVS2. Overall my execution has been piss poor. Iām really not the best at fighting games and quite honestly I suck. But the thing is, even though Iām no good at Fighting Games, I always had the DRIVE and DETERMINATION to be the best that I could be, as well as to improve my skills. School and other errands has always kept me from going to tournaments or even missing out on Chinatown Fair, but I would always go to the local arcade to try games out.
Speaking of arcades, I remember back in the day, it was cut throat, competition was fierce and there was no way around it. It was either go home or go hard. If you didnāt go hardā¦well GTFO. Itās really one of the few recent games that make me feel like I can take it to another level.
I first heard about Skullgirls right around the time Yamane. The animation really stuck out to me but the gameplay mechanics ,made me love it even more. I has always heard of Mike Z, but I had no idea that he was working on the game. Looking at interviews, I was really struck by how everything he says makes sense. Itās just refreshing to hear someone whoās really passionate about what he/she believes in. What I REALLY like about Skullgirls though is that itās attempting to bring back the old days of fighting games, where you had to learn your characters instead of just hurping and derping around. At the same time, it also does a good job of teaching newer fans of fighting games, the basics of playing fighting games. Things like footsies, spacing, etc that were a central component of older fighting games are brought back to the front, and just the overall philosophy of the game in general is just too good to pass up.
As a person who grew up with the older games despite not being very good at them, I can appreciate what Mike Z is trying to do with the game and take the genre as a whole. Lately weāve seen a glut of newer games, that donāt really focus on the basics of the things that I mentioned above, and focus more on flash rather than substance. I know that there will be people who will have their qualms about the game, but itās a Fighting Game that is a labor of love and is made with thought. Itās time for us to get back to when resets and spacing matters, and Skullgirls is looking to do all that and much more. Hopefully people will support the game and show the same kind of passion that we had during the old arcade days.
Tuesday canāt come soon enough!
Here are my general reasons for being excited for Skullgirls:
āI appreciate the fact that it seems to have reached a nice middle ground between the insanity of Marvel and the methodical, footsie based nature of SF.
āHaving 6 normals is soooo awesome.
ā2 button throws. Honestly, Iāve been playing SFIV for so long that 2 button throws just feel ānormalā to me.
āAs someone whoās into illustration myself, Iām really digging the beautiful art direction. Well, I think itās beautiful, at least.
āGGPO
āThe fact that this $15 XBLA game seems more thoughtfully designed and packed with more meangingful content than most full priced FGās.
Most games (or any product) are made to maximize success by any means necessary. Making it appeal to everyone at all costs.
This game seems to try and maximize success by being GOOD
love the artwork, gameplay looks really good,I love the ost to the game and it has ggpo
Funny, most of my FG experience is from Darkstalkers and Marvel so the 2 button throws are going to be the biggest and most difficult adjustment for me. :U
I wasnāt interested until the Mike Z interview with Skisonic. After he talked about the unique features of this game, I was hooked.
The Graphics(you may hate the art, but you canāt hate how the game looks in 60fps.)
Dat Hardcore MVC2 fan that play Juggernaut/Doom/Tron.
Dat Double and Peacock.
I am interested because it looks like a game that rewards creativity with custom assists and what not. Seems like it will be a lot like Marvel 3 in terms of being creative but will be much more reset and mixup based and not just derpy full screen teleport mixups, buster cancels, normals that hit half a screen away into TOD combos.
As many have mentioned a skilled FG player who has fantastic knowledge on fighting game theory is putting his heart and soul into the game so you know it will be good.
I honestly cant stand the art and hate the entire cast is all females but aesthetics play a very small role in determining what I will and will not play. As long as the game is quality is all I care about.
I will be playing Painwheel. I havent decided on the other characters yet but Painwheel for sure.
It seems to have all the stuff that makes fighting games great, and none of the stuff that fucks them up. The most honest shit out there at the moment. Here is to hoping this will be the next best thing, for a long time.
Painwheel <3
Mike Z is what got me interested in this game. His design philosophy surrounding the game has just seemed spot on from day one.
The unique art style and delicious animations were a huge plus.
Double only served to reaffirm my excitement for the game, nothing like a good lovecraftian horror to round out a good fighter.
