3s
ST
T5:DR (likely console release in Spring of 06)
GGXX/ (confirmed release date of Spring 06)
MvC2
CvS2 (don’t people just kinda come out of nowhere to play this game? Like Mole people in hibernation…)
Other games past this point are pruely speculatory. DOA4, KOF, SC, etc. SC3 could be added, and could potentially increase attendence based on how new the game is. However, it could really go either way. Evo attendees wouldn’t flock to it the way mall scrubs would.
IMO, this list reflects the games with the strongest communities. I’m obviously advocating the adoption of GGXX/ as soon as possible, as the community as a whole really wants it. This has been brought up before in the past, and I think the point has been made, but I’ll reiterate. The people who will be seriously playing in the Slash tourney are the same ones who will import it ASAP. If you give a shit about the game, you will find a way to play it. Delaying a version switch actually hinders far more people (in the form of those that would forced to play both versions at the same time), than just outright moving to GGXX/ as soon as possible. Every other tourney in the country is switching to Slash once the Japanese console release hits, anyway. Evo would be the absolute last tourney to not do this.
But like I said before, I honestly believe the Evo staff understand how appealing being dynamic can be by staying up to date. Hopefully Slash will be the game for GG players, we’ll have that figured out and out of the way, and nobody will ever have to talk about it again.
3s has never been stronger in terms of player base and player strength based on the law of averages that comes from that. Will probably be the headliner game of Evo 2k6, along with whatever else that can be done to spice up the event (unique game tourney, hot rivalry, team tournament replacing a main game, etc).
What exactly ARE the thoughts of doing a lot of SBO-style team tournies? 2v2, 3v3, 5v5, doesn’t matter really. The point is that the game that it hypothetically happens to would be a LOT more fun to play in, and to watch. A much broader dynamic in terms of character selection could be seen, regardless of which game. You may even be able to keep it as double elmination because the amount of players would remain the same, but the potential amount of matches could be cut down. However, that would only be logical for a CERTAIN amount of teams. Afterall, say you took 3s numbers from 2k5, which were easily above 300. Well a 5v5 format would average to about 60 teams. That’s a lot of freakin’ teams. Qualifiers would definately have to be in effect, and may not work out at all due to the time constraints.
Perhaps though, you could hold a singles tourney up through pools/qualifiers. Then you have a total of 64 remaining players. Out of those 64 remaining players, you could THEN make up a team tourney. It would work LOGICALLY, but realistically nobody’s ever going to go for that shit. If you qualified, you wouldn’t want to team up with anybody, you’d want to go for the gold.
