Overall @ your response, I misworded. Instead of “Defending” I meant “Being Defensive.” Obviously just sitting there defending doesnt help in any game, but parrying gives frame advantage and the smash defending techniques give various advantages in your offensive game by using a defensive move. In GG, even bursting is mostly just to get you out of combos, or to get them into one (Burst button when you’re not being hit).
Overall, I just don’t like GG. I don’t know why I just don’t like it. Fine with 3s, plenty of other 2d fighters, just never liked GG. It IS a very, very offense based game, and there is a definite lack of defensive strategical advantage. Just my opinion though.
Sirlin also has nothing to do with game balance, his view is that you should take a game for what it is and learn to win. He advocates abusing imbalanced moves until other people see it so much they become accustomed to fighting against it. His idea of “Balance” is that there is an endgame where competition is to be had. He would say that marvel is “Balanced” because there is plenty to do in the endgame, tons of competition to be had, and tons of innovation to be made. He doesn’t focus on the fact that marvel has 50-something characters and only 8-10 of them are really useable if you want to win and most of the time 4 are abused, in a game centered around 3 person teams.
Game balance is differant than endgame balance, when endgame balance eliminates 80% of the games characters x.x
Nothing wrong with the sirlin line of thinking, just don’t use the word balance to describe it :o
lolz about no rewards for being defensive in gg, i would guess you haven’t mastered the air throw, or the anti air for your character, or their special abilities, or the IB, or their correct pokes.
To spill the truth to you, plain rush down gets you killed in this game. You need to zone carefully, let the opponent think it’s safe for them to attack, and then you counter attack. Thus you must have fast reflexes to judge things. For e.g opponent comes in from the air, you must judge quickly if you should 6p, air throw, or IB to counter. IMO anti airing, zoning, countering, and smart turtling are playing defensively. And is crucial to gameplay. I.e using baikens mats to force the rush down opponent to block. Using anji’s auto guards. Using ky’s slide attack to counter projectile whores. Using johnny’s 2hs to counter poor tick throw attempts. ANd a lot more. The difference may be that in this game, you are using defense mechanisms to go on the offense and score damage.

xmvsf should be official because it is just as competitive as MvC2 and very popular with so cal arcades such as FFA and james games. People from Canada and Austraila are coming down just for the xmvsf tourney.
“Plain” anything should get you killed in any game. Zoning =/= defense. Mindgames =/= defense. Counter attacking =/= defense. Even when saying 6p, throw or instant block to counter only ONE of the options is fucking defensive, instant blocking. Some characters have moves that can be percieved as defensive but clearly aren’t, like anji’s counter forward attacks of retardation. He’s not defending, he’s fucking running and trying to hit you, the fact that he instant countrattacks out of it is immaterial, it just means it’s a safe attack. Baikens mats used defensively for spacing IS a defensive strategy, but awefully freaking short-term, and not very reliable. Ky’s slide avoiding projectiles is offensive, you’re avoiding an attack by sliding at them to attack before their lag of their move is over, or when the next begins.
That’s NOT defending. Using a defensive move/tactic to gain an offensive advantage is something I find key in fighting games, and it’s virtually extinct in guilty gear, spare a few examples that don’t affect overall play. It’s an almost purely offensive game. Offensive mindgames, offensive spacing, offensive movement. That’s what I don’t like, is it really that hard to understand/accept?
man shooting you would be a waste of a bullet
Thanks for making a stupid one-liner instead of responding.
but why should he waste his time on garbage???
Street Fight III: 2nd impact.
this game is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY better then 3s. So much more fun, and less boring. I’d rather watch/play this any day…
I also challenge daigo to a competition in running the gauntlet. Not only should this be recorded, but it should have it’s own seperate dvd, and possibly its own event. My rival is not ready, but I issue a challenge for the ages…
Interesting.
2 kalypso: oh wellz. Shrug. I thought it was common knowledge that being offensive means you take the initiative to attack. Hence i dun see how anti airing, counter attacking, zoning, and spacing correctly is an offensive measure. It’s a defensive measure that lets you turn the tide, and score some good damage without putting your life on the line.
well whatever it is, it seems like you just have a general dislike of the game, more so than you actualli have a reason to dislike it. Hence no matter what anyone says or how much they provide counter evidence against your reasons, it will not make you change your opinion. Oh wellz, a lot of ppl are like that. And at least i’ve shown that you only have minimal knowledge in gg, hence your comments won’t be taken offensively by the community. Which is a good thing i guess…
bleh…
You should spend more time on Sirlin’s website.
Firstly, I said “Sirlin’s article on game balance” and not “Sirlin’s viewpoints throughout several of his play to win articles.” I was trying to reference one of his more recent articles where he shows how Guilty Gear uses several techniques and options (which, I noted, is similar to the options presented in Smash) in order to keep things balanced.
Sirlin actually does focus on the fact that only 8-10 characters in Marvel end up being playable, and says that the total number of characters is irrelevant (which it is). Maybe today the game is not so good due to the big 4 being abused constantly (which may explain it’s general decline recently) but it took what, 7 years to get that far?
BTW, Sirlin’s line of thinking/playing is the reason why balance is even talked about at all.
Thanks for the input everyone, since the gamelist for 2k6 is complete, there’s nothing more to do here.
