There was a bit in some of the Alpha games, I remember a bit in 3. Also Evil Ryu’s ending in Japanese had blood when he hit Sagat with the shoryuken.
but i like how goofy sf4 is
Samurai Spirits did blood the best.
the same characters from 20 years ago------
Not only blood, but there were also times where a character would vomit from being hit so hard. Or at least it looked like vomit. Could’ve been blood, but it was orange, not red.
This is actually, imo, an homage to the artwork of Bengus, an artist who has been at CAPCOM since the original SF, and who is known for drawing large feet and hands in his earlier works…

Makoto!
Seth, not so much the character, but how his entire gameplan can revolve around 50/50s. It turns SF4 into a bit of Marvel, the only good defense against a vortex character is to not be put into the vortex.
Cannon Drill.
How come when you block the first hit you cant stand?
How come it always adds knockdown and sets up a free mix up you cant backdash out of?
Aside from that command grabs
I don’t know why there is no blood at all now, but SF2 was really doing what every Capcom game did back then. Look at Final Fight, Alien vs Predator, and Bionic Commando. It wasn’t a big deal, just expected when final fight had blood and stuff. Violent game over screens were common in beat 'em ups. Nina Gaiden (arcade’s) gameover screen of getting tied to a chair under a descending table saw was way more disturbing than MK’s goofy, B-movie inspired fatalities.
The first thing I think of when considering SF4’s visual style is ‘it looks like Fisher Price made a fighting game’. I hate it so much and it’s one of the reasons I don’t spend long with the game. There’s just no grit in any of the models, textures or effects. And too much ‘comical’ crap which isn’t actually funny or cool at all. Hakan could have been one of the most sinister, coolest grapplers ever but they opted to turn him in to a Disney villain’s sidekick instead.
In what way are the mechanics of MK “too casual”? And how is there less strategy and knowledge in MK9 than in SF4?
I know, and that’s what I was replying to. Isn’t the ‘problem’ less with that mechanic and more with which characters have it? People keep citing safe wakeup FADCs as bad, but is it still bad if a crap character can do it but not a great character? It’s neither universal among characters or omnipresent among the characters that do have it (it requires 2x stocks of meter). Each to their own though, I can definitely say I’ve “hated” things for a lot less than FADC wakeups, haha.
Agreed man. The SF4 stages/music are so bland and unhype.
Music…It’s just too empty.
Gens theme and a few others are ace, but I wish it was just more “Thick”
Seriously, people care about the stages? … … … oh boy…
yo crumbling laboratory is boss in every way
and while people may hate on Seth, his theme is undeniably baller
The things I care about in stages
- Don’t have fucking annoying things
- No crass contrast which hurts the eyes
Both laboratories and the drive in are retarded, everything else is w/e
I exclusively play on Training Stage / Run Down Back Alley because they’re the least overloaded with bullshit
I don’t understand why one would want “more interesting”, “less bland” stages.
Do you spend time watching the background while you fight?
“Stop hitting me, I need a sec, look there is this lovely rock formation in the background! Such a sweet stage!”? ~.~
I understand your perspective. For me it’s nostalgia. The original SF2 stages were character specific, which gave you the feeling of being a World Warrior. We’re spoiled with technology NOW, but back in the day, we had to wait for screens to load so you would be looking at a stage for 30 seconds or so before the next screen. It was part of the aesthetics of the original SF2 which carried on until this game. Not only did you have the images in the background, but the music was character specific as well. The stages were cool to look at with homages to other CAPCOM games (Strider, Felicia in SFA series backgrounds),
The only two major games that didn’t have character specific backgrounds that I remember, were MK and Tekken. It’s just another sign of CAPCOM being lax in their game development.
If you never played SF2 in the arcade, you might not understand this perspective.
It’s all good. Each to their own.
I liked Capcom vs SNK’s backgrounds. I liked how they had an interaction before the match started… so boss.
Yeah that was really cool. Still, I’m with Vulpes on this. I like stages where the emphasis is on the fight, and where the fight is taking place where some kung fu movie would have taken place. One of the best changes for Third Strike was that they got rid of all spectators.
The silliest of all were the contrast in the KoF backgrounds. Look at '97 where there’s hundreds of people going nuts and then in '99 they have the Alley where a dude is talking to a chick like there’s nothing going on except the rest of the party,
What the fuck are you talking about? I don’t care about oohing and aahing over textures, I’m talking about a stage getting you psyched for the impending fight. Watch the cage slam down at the start of the Ken vs Claw match in the link below and tell me that isn’t the game saying BANG YOU GETTING SHIT ON HARD SON NOW GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY YARD.

The reason SF4’s stages and music are crap isn’t just because I think they’re ugly, it’s because they also don’t generate adrenalin. They don’t run up to you and punch you in the face like Claw’s, Dictator’s, Guile’s, etc. old stages do. That’s what I was talking about with “grit”. SF4 stages are your grandma wallowing in her armchair unable to decide whether she wants you to cook pasta and meatballs for her or the chicken salad instead. ST is that fucked-up uncle of yours that turned up at that one family reunion a few years back with vomit and cocaine all over his face and had back-to-front sex with your dad in full view of everybody.
I want charlie’s stage back and the music too.
I want akuma stage from 3s
Capcom still need to fix akuma and gouken’s theme when we play with the alternate musics
