Had someone switch to every character in the game and beat me with them, and I knew from the start he was a better player but I don’t know why he had to push it to that extent, just recently ran into another person who was about to do the same, then switched to the same character I was using, and I pretty much seen this pattern enough times to just leave.
Had me thinking, how would other people feel if someone did this to them? I know this one time someone was trying to talk to me about how hard his character is and I ended up using them and beating him with it, and he left the house and I can’t help but feel I just insulted him.
Another is using weak decks on hisoutensoku and just stomping the player without using a single card.
Years ago when I used to be a complete unaware dick, I would do this to my friends, and sure enough… I had no one left to play with.
I’ve had this happen to me, but I don’t consider it ‘disrespectful’. In cases like that, the person you’re playing against wants to spice things up a bit so he’ll mess with different characters. They could steamroll you with his main, but that would bore them. The best cure for this is to simply level your game up so that they’re forced to pick their main on you.
As far as the general topic goes, my philosophy is that everything within the game is fine in terms of being a respectful opponent. If you want to taunt or do combos on my dead body post-match (ie: older Marvel titles), go right ahead. All of these are a part of the player’s ‘toolbox’. If taunting my opponent makes them upset and they start playing sloppily, why not use it? Disrespect for your opponent comes into play via stuff like hatemail or being a jerk IRL.
I basically agree with Buster Cannon. Stomping someone over and over is super boring, and doing things like playing off main or artificial restrictions on themselves like no meter make it more interesting. I personally just try to give at least 3-4 games, then just leave if I’m stomping, but to each his own.
I agree with anything in game being fine, within reason. One big thing I think is disrespectful is infinite comboing a dead body in games where it’s possible. If you wanna combo and juggle for a little bit I don’t mind, but past a minute of doing an infinite that’s holding up the game is pretty excessive.
Not taking it too seriously or doing things you enjoy in the game that aren’t necessarily the optimal strategies to win. Additionally, I’ll say it doesn’t only apply to people who aren’t good, the reverse could also be true where the player is leagues above you and will occasionally play sub-characters or not play their absolute best and have fun. Sometimes it’s good-natured intentions, other times it’s just to purposefully embarrass the opponent. I’d say the disrespect part is if someone is doing the latter.
It could also be because the other player wants to actually learn and improve on stuff they haven’t already mastered, but it’s hard to consider that aspect if you’re on the losing end of it and feel like you’re not being taken seriously. 'Nothing more uncomfortable to me than playing someone who is in a bad mood and feels like you’re dissing them when you don’t mean to.
its not ALWAY sand bagging tho. like when I am playing against “not so great players” in cvs2 then Id pick some weird team/grooves. doesn’t mean I am playing bad on purpose. I just have to work harder to win thats all. no “disrespek”. no I don’t feel like playing sagat/blanka every match lol…
Nah, I just don’t mind what the result is. Fun is just to derive pleasure from the experience. That is all it is to me. I am having fun during the match, but if I lose, not fun, but oh well, I move on. If I win than that’s great and winning is fun. I play SFIV a lot, and I lose a lot and also win a lot. I really don’t mind losing. My main is Vega/Dictator and I win with him more than my secondary who is Seth, but I get bored of using Vega, so I use Seth to have some fun since he is fun to use even though I lose with him more.
