What determines a game to be qualified / accepted for an tournament at EVO?

I mean obviously some thought and consideration is taken for when a game selected to be chosen to represent the tournament for an event.

In the case of MK9 for example, do the Tournament Directors receive a playable build and analyze / play test it (such as the PAX build for example) to determine the game is competitively viable for acceptance for such an event?

I’m sure they don’t just write down a bunch of games on a piece of paper and randomly select the first 5 or 6 picked from a hat.

And it doesn’t seem likely for them to simply pick a unreleased / unplayed game as a gamble to put as part of a main event.

I can understand this to happen for side events, but never a main event as far as my experience as a spectator.

For a competitive fighting game tournament that is considered amongst others as THE premiere fighting game competition in the entire world, I’m just curious about what goes into the deciding factor and thought process for a game to be picked.

For games such as SSFIV, Tekken 6, this seems easy to understand as there are already existing games that have been proven to be competitive staples which consist of a relatively balanced cast of characters, or in the case of Super Turbo and Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 which have become dominant presence being one of the most played games in tournaments for nearly 10 years.

What is different for a unreleased game in which the only playable version that exists being a non-final preview build?

Or is this a trial-by-fire to see how the game stands up in a competitive environment? (Which I also understand the game will be released prior to the tournament so it’s not like those that plan to participate are going into the tournament blindly and have an opportunity to get proficient with a preferred character in the game)

I’m not hating on MK9 being selected as I’m also very interested how the tournament pros plan to break the game down and reveal it for what it may be and all of the viable tactics shown available during and after the tournament is over.

Which will also lead to where each character stands in terms of tiers, combo videos, and the actual match vids themselves.

MvC3 seemed to get a lot of coverage and several playable previews at the various Fight Club events, but same does not apply for MK9 however.

  1. Does it not look too old?
  2. Does it not look too anime?
  3. Is the developer willing to pay to sponsor it?
  4. If the answer to question 3 is no, is the developer Capcom or Namco?

 at everyone who’s salty cause MK9 is on the roster
No matter how much you whine, the game is already on the roster.
Wait till EVO2K11 is over and then we can go ahead and give feedback or ask stupid shit like this, meanwhile, threads like this are only annoying since they are totally useless.

I don’t think the original poster seems salty about it at all. He just seems curious about how a series that’s had plenty of HATED entries recently got into Evo. Honestly, I’m with him. Its a bit of a risk, but I welcome it

Yes I’m certainly interested in the match ups for MK9 at EVO, as I’ve stated in my initial post, but I guess leaving a comment in a topic does not require someone at all to read the first post ‘properly’.

I don’t care if a game is hated or not. I can create examples of many Anime fighters that had a negative opinion around them such as Melty Blood and Arcana Heart, but I’m not one to judge a game based on it’s aesthetics. The only thing that matters to me is a an actual quality playing game.

MK has already had a playable build at PAX and most of those that played that build left with an extremely positive impression and the game was largely unfinished with only 10 characters out of the 26 selectable.

There is no telling how much more improved the game gets with the additional characters included not available in the build at PAX and further balancing done as it we get closer to it’s release date in April.

The fact that the game was decent at an unfinished state and is likely to improve even more at retail makes all the difference to me.

The only thing is I don’t have enough disposable income to fly to Rio and participate myself (as much as I’d love to), which is why I stick to mostly local tournaments in Philadelphia such as NEC.

As for the selection of games themselves. I suppose it could be a bunch of these guys all meet up a in discussion room and go over which game will bring the largest showing / audience, build the biggest hype. I am not sure, I’m only speculating, which is why I created this topic to have a better understanding on how is all organized and laid out.

if you’re just “curious”, you can PM an admin
You don’t have to make a public thread which could be linked to whenever people dont agree with the selection method.
You really want Mr Wizard or the Cannons to come into this forum and post their game choosing method so you can hold them to it??? They have every right to be creative in any way they feel. No reason to explain their method in this forum, specially to some random poster who’s just "curious"
EVO is a brand, and like it or not, the EVO staff MUST have a business mentality as well.
You also have 8 years worth of EVO game selection to find a pattern (if there is one)

again, this thread is stupid and useless…
it’ll hopefully be closed… no reason to talk about this when EVO hasn’t even happened yet

If the thread is that bothersome to you, you can always not participate in it. I’m not forcing you post here. Nor am I making any sort of demands / holding anyone to it.

Talk about talking my post out of context, Christ.

like I said… your curiosity can be satisfied through PM
even I don’t participate in this thread, all you’re doing is giving space to people for whining (since absolutetly noone can answer your question but the EVO staff) and that only spams this forum as a whole, that’s why I’m posting here…

I think MK9 will have a lot of players regardless of quality, unless it’s really terrible. I dare speculate that MK9 will have more entrants than any of the games that didn’t make it would have had. A lot of people are eager to get their nostalgia on with old school-like MK, and it’s a big brand name. A lot of people are ready to give MK another chance.

Also, it is one of the very few notable non-japanese fighting games. EVO might want to support it because of this as well, which I personally think is nice.

All I know is I’ll be watching the streaming of EVO MK no matter how late at night/morning it’ll be over here. MK hype!

The selection process.

Will this game make us more money than this game?

Repeat 5 times.

I assume that it’s based off of interest, nothing more.

J.D. while you’re right and it is the tournament organizers choice to include said game, the OP is right in that EVO is THE largest tournament in the world outside of SBO, and therefore is very prestigious and held in a different light than other tournaments.

Due to this, just carelessly throwing a game onto the playlist that is unreleased and has no playable final build to date seems like a very reckless thing to do as far as the tournaments reputation goes.

If MK9 turns out to be a flop I have a feeling EVO is gonna get a lot of shit for it when they could’ve included other games such as GGAC, KOF13, etc.

KOF13 has no concrete console release date, so that’s impossible.

What I don’t get is why Blazblue is on the list. I mean with the whole BS about Continuum Shift 2 coming out as DLC, and being paid DLC to simply receive the balance changes it will fracture the player base even more. I think ArcSys is providing the $$$.

stupid thread is stupid.

existing characters and engine are updated for free, but teh new characters cost money.

this is just like how it will work with AE, iirc.
