I must say i agree with your post here. and to be honest i am one of those people who can’t code for his life. and due to this i have stopped playing mugen. if other users have the nack for it then by all means let them.
fine… mugen is a fun casual fighting game engine. happy now? it is highly unlikely that any game created using mugen will be played competitively for numerous reasons. if you think otherwise, please go on and enlighten us with your mugen expertise.
mugen is a tool, yes; a tool for amateurs and hobbyists.

I hate that Mugen makes me have to filter through an ass load of bull shit videos on youtube to find matches for a number of games. That shits so fucking old.
Truth that. I’m getting sick of youtube friends sending me Mugen episodes and team initiations. WTF is that all about?
Whatever happened to Elecbyte after they disappeared with tons of donation money for several years?
Also, are creators like ShinRyoga (I think he made a really badass custom Mario), Orochi Herman, and RotBRC still going?

Hopefully, thats if that ever finish with 1.0 trying to make the little kids happy that their crappy character is compatible. then maybe elecybte will be taken seriously, but now its shit. They need to add new features back to back
The thing is this Elecbyte due to their long leave of absence is not relevant enough to stop the progress of the mugen community. I by no means am disrespecting them or being unappreciative of their works but the thing is this. In the past when the limitations of the engine impeded those it inspired. It was hacked ported so on an so forth. To were the release of elecbytes own belated update was touted by many as not being as relevant as the patches and hacks that were already in place. Alot of creators are porting there creations sure but many still don’t bother to change the couple lines of code to make it compatible. So elecbyte doesn’t have to be taken seriously for mugen to. I am happy they got there shit together and started updating again though.
I would like to applaud people so far for being pretty reasonable/non-heated.

There’s no way you can create a big meaningful tourney scene if it involves ripping art from other games. MUGEN’s a dead end and encrusted with the deepest piles of crap of any game. There are a few gems struggling to mature here and there, but by and large it’s just terrible.
“I have ripped off the sprites for game x and so therefore I will call this Super Game X” is a pretty big insult to the original game you’re ripping off. I’m not going to pass off my fan art as a Van Gogh - and I certainly wouldn’t call my attempt “Super Sunflowers X” or anything else audacious.
There’s lots of (fun) ways to waste your time online - this is certainly one of them.
I think I see the path this thread took already in Preppy’s post and a few others on this page. I second the thought that this doesn’t seem like a complete joke/shit thread and that’s a good thing.
I never have, and I don’t think anyone has that’s played in the scene competitively, take MUGEN seriously. Some of the characters they create and modify are funny and some are just insane but I think the most fun part is taking the crazy characters and putting the computer AI to work in “Watch” mode. It’s a fun “hobby” type thing, almost like making models or figures and I guess it could be sort of an introduction to character design but beyond that, such as being a real game that is taken seriously, I don’t give it any cred.
With that being said, Thor vs Evil (now Demon?) Ken on Watch mode is epic in itself.

I would like to applaud people so far for being pretty reasonable/non-heated.

Okay, but that’s the scene, not the engine.
this is sad that those kids making stupid character created such a bad rep for us real creators. some of our shit is solid and one day i want to make a game that can be taken serisouly by hard core players.

the most solid mugen game i think i ever seen.
edit and more example of soild work. not everything is fucked up with mugen. i wish there was like a mugen commutiee to govern stuff.

capcom would never use the mugen engine (aside from copyright and other reasons blahblah) because of the severe limitations it has. don’t pretend like the mugen engine is godlike.
don’t get me wrong, there is a lot of high quality work out there. and i agree with alexlexus that there needs to be an “official” community with some form of “quality control”. elecbyte developed a great engine but provided no support for it. i applaud those in the community that are doing things to keep it alive.

On a slightly serious note I’ve heard some doujin games are actually hacked versions of mugen, but I don’t have reports of it on hand.
The engine has potential to do a bunch of stuff, but it’s doomed to silly things like making ssj evil orochi vega.

I’m sure it’s a decent enough game, but there already was a Capcom vs SNK and it official. I have little to no interest in this. Show me a legit, original game, with original characters. Then I will have some respect for MUGEN.

I think shinryoga and oherman show up occasionally on random forums/irc channels.

Capcom would never use the mugen engine because they have their own programmers, they aren’t making new 2d games, it’s a PC engine, etc. Moreover, that has nothing to do with anything, adn certainly nothing to do with the post you replied to.
The Guy who is making “Card Saga Wars” is making his game from the ground with mugen, making his own sprites and all.
Here is some gameplay
His website http://cardgallery.tales-tra.com/main.htm
Yeah I saw vids of that months ago. Looks ‘premium’. We could use more of that effort with MUGEN and other such programs.
man that game looks beast. my next project will be another version od masters of the universe. capcom vs series visuals sprite wise.
Mugen sucks, those are my thoughts.
Thought, you mean.
