West Coast Warzone II - Long Beach, CA - Apr. 2-4 2010 | SF4 3v3 Added!

Showed this little tussle to a friend of mine, his responses:

(5:12:06 PM): SF4 is the anyone can learn it game
(5:12:17 PM): these fools that have been playing SF since 89 love the shit
(5:12:42 PM): Rofl, of course the tourney’s stack more money, game is current and every fucking scrub and their mother plays the shit
(5:13:53 PM): You didn’t really sound that hateful on SF4 either
(5:14:33 PM): Yes, the street fighter scene is huge and you have to suck old school player dick to get invited anywhere worth playing.
(5:19:13 PM): Rofl
(5:19:16 PM): HE told YOU to put your ego aside

I never said SF4 was a garbage game.

I was saying SF4 makes more money AT TOURNAMENTS because “every fucking scrub and their mother plays the shit”.

I was saying Marvel has a REALLY developed community with real rivalries and drama and real money to be made in real serious glory matches.

I was saying that Marvel IS a community because Marvel is and always will be an arcade game.

You do not level up sitting at home jerking off to the same footsie mambo your friends throw around every time you play, it’s the same shit over and over minus the excelling 1% of players who are almost ALWAYS old school players that sit at home and think up new ways to manipulate the match in their favor and who require a little knob polishing and brown nosing to get in tight with so that you CAN level up your game.

Marvel is open to all to experience top-level play, SF4 is a close-knit group of O.G. Super Turbo players.

Apology accepted, but I still see things my way.

I didn’t see any hate in my post.

Did you?

(5:20:48 PM): I don’t even know what the fuck is going on in Marvel half the time
(5:20:51 PM): but it’s flashy and pretty

Higher learning curve, that’s what.

*My $0.2 1,000,000

This point is completely invalid. SF4 is not responsible in any way shape or form for any positive momentum in the marvel community. wcw2 will not bring any marvel players back, instead we have marvel players like demon hyo saying “I want to focus on sf4” Justin Wong also. Prior to sf4 this was never an issue with these players. Some of the average and top players have moved to sf4, and if they do try to enter marvel they are not of the calibur to win due to marvel’s ever progressing competitive scene. As of now, I’ve not established a point of my own, simply pointed out that I think your point was invalid. As a mature gamer/adult I’m pretty sure that I can disagree with your point without having any sort of major contigency on a personal level.

Now, to state my own point…When you say sf4 is where the money is, to the average sheep this is the truth. However upon closer observation you can realize that the pot is going to a small group, the pantheon of top players if you will. You can boast a number “sf4 had a pot of $10,000” but the truth is that all went to daigo justin and so on. That money didn’t hit anyone but the top 3. When we say marvel is where the money is we’re referring to all of the money exchanced non-stop from the highest eschelon to the lowest. A scene where someone like rudy is playing neo for $1000 bucks. Neither of them are top 5 in the world. A scene where someone like toan can win $13,000 in a money match against me. Where $100 matches are happening on a regular basis from people who couldn’t compete in any way with the top players.

SF4 has an unrestricted ammount of hype right now. Depending on how one defines hype it can be considered to be one of the most hype games in the scene right now. However I define hype from a different standpoint and agree with most others. An excellent analogy would be comparing golf and hockey. While golf might have bigger pots than your standard hockey match, there is an energy level, a vibrancy, that almost consumes you when caught up in the moment. I’ve only experienced that when I watch Justin play Daigo in sf4. I can get that from a collective of about 20 players in the marvel community. The energy output during sf4’s hypest moment slightly edges out marvel’s, but that is based on shear numbers. I.e. at graduation in my family typically we are the loudest most vibrant group of people to cheer. This is because I come from a humongous family of 9, and my mom was also one of 7, so based on numbers alone we’re going to produce more energy than most. Notwithstanding the fact that we’re black. However if a group of 4 are almost able to match our energy level we can clearly say, they’re a lot more hype than we are. In that same way marvel has less numbers now, because sf4 is obviously more commercial right about now. Marvel is perpetual, it will see the end of sf4, just as it saw the end of a few guilty gears, 3s, cfj, cvs2, several tekkens, and many other fighting games. Unless capcom continues to make sequels and modification to the sf4 engine it will eventually come to an end. I’m not hoping for it, just pointing out an observation.

Anyways the pith of my argument is this: Sf4 is more hype by some definitions, but by the most pervasive usage of the word hype, marvel is the game that really fits the definition. Marvel is perpetual and will continue to exist for a very long time unless we see a mvc3 which is not comparable to the hype of mvc2. One can assume this will happen because capcom tends to think almost broken is not good. Marvel was viewed by most at capcom to be a failure due to glitches and infinites and just overal brokenness of the game. Clearly 10 years after the game was made being the best selling games on ps3 and one of the top 3 selling games on xbox 360 shows they are misplacing their value. Thus mvc3, if ever released, will most likely fail. SF4 is where the money is for the pantheon, but marvel is where the money is for EVERYONE (even non marvel players side bet on huge marvel matches garnering great results). SF4 is enticing some of the marvel players away (which I guess is ok) but will not last forever and I firmly believe they will be back. Finally, I hope the fighting game community never dies and I hope sf4 never dies and becomes perpetual just as marvel is.

I’m not gonna bother to grammar/spell check this. Critique it as you will.

I see your point in a higher learning curve for execution - Marvel is king no doubt.

What would you do as a game developer to get more people to play though? Make the game harder? I can’t agree I enjoy the easy inputs of SF4 but its something to get used to, just like every other SF series.

Third Strike and Virtua Fighter communities suffer from being too hard for the mainstream. So only the hardcore gets into it alas less players.

As for rivalries:

This is a brand new Street Fighter, give it time. The rivalries will get stronger as people get better.

I’ve successfully gathered all of SoCal’s best players to meet up and play together for one full day. This way they can take everything they learned back to their respective regions and level up their up and coming players.

I’m trying new things for this communty instead of traditional tough-love because this scene needs positive energy for progression and to be accepted by the mainstream.

Again, I’m not trying to convince you, just try to understand the respect of this community and the potential it deserves.

You do make some good points about the big money tourneys are not spread out, which I agree should be to at least top 8 in a major now. (If the prize pot is over 3K give or take) This can change in the future.

The community is doing MMs in SF4 left and right. Maybe not in the 13K mark yet. But theres a lot of MM’s in hotel rooms, byoc’s, even some 1v1 tourneys at my WNFs. Again, give it time. People will feel themselves pretty soon and start putting big money on the line. This is a “new” game to a lot of people, so of course they’re not going to wager in that type of money this early in the game.

Hype: I guess its all in the eye of the beholder.
This is SF4’s second year in. Marvel hype didn’t start til there were better players, maybe in 2001,2002? New regions started talking shit, and this will be inevitable with SF4. The Hate/Hype Monsters are coming.
Daigo and Justin matches are very hype, but that clearly tells us that the rest of the players are way behind. Kind of like Me vs Duc in the OG days of mvc2, not many players stuck around cause they knew we were gonna be in finals anyways.

Lets see, there’s a lot of sponsoring going on right now in the community because of SF4 and people are winning sticks, fight pads, and other swag just by attending those events. The only other major sponsorship before SF4 was Toyota at EVO.
I also have a lot of goodies in the future for this community =)

As far as SF4 failing, well thats up to the community. The game is just a tool to bring them together.

Street Fighter 3 : 3rd Strike

!

I think that is a GREAT point. However, because the marvel community isn’t what it used to be I doubt there is enough of the scene left that can breed players with the skills to beat Justin.

3v3 is now official. Sign ups available at the website, warzonetournament.com

…Perhaps the main reason? LOL jk Fanatiq

I Agree

I Agree

I disagree

Speaking of money matches, I will bring about $500.00 to $1000.00 for Marvel Money Matches. Please post if you’d like to money match me and the amount. Sanford/Justin, I will talk to you guys about this in person

SF4 is helping the community. Ive been around for 10 years I compare the SF4 hype to MvC2. Ive notice players i havent seen in 8 years come back to the community because of SF4 and play MvC2 while attending the SF4 tourney. Their will always be a comparison of games but…dont shit on people who put effort in the community of a game, just DO THE SAME THING:china:

AKA Soz - I hope your GDLK in MvC2 cause it makes no sense for you to make noise for a show to be put on for your purposes and your IN THE AUDIENCE:shake: Or even better put some money up and call MvC2 players out and say what they cant do and how you are running shit and cant be beat:shy:

Just come out and have a good time and lets make WCW2 EPIC

Me and Brian “Grimmz” Rincon will hopefully be coming down to this. I’m looking forward to meeting and playing against some of SoCal’s best. Should be lots of fun

Good stuff!

Justin Wong, Sanford, yipes, Chunksta, myself, reset disagree with you there buddy.

registered and ticket booked! cant wait to see everyone! =D

Justin, Sanford, and Yipes yes and quite possibly still Chunksta. As for the rest, I disagree buddy. Well, maybe top 8

I agree with calipower as sf4’s hype is referred to its largely generated player base. Marvel hype is referred to its players passion/heart, IMO. Honestly, sf4 is more successful despite its opposers. I think its basic game-play allow any sf player to pick it up, in contrast with marvel.

sf4 marketing is phenomenal.

Marvel is dead as referred to skill progression. EC basically skys-the-limit; contesting no challenge and moved on to other platforms. Whats left are less-skilled players who love the game find ways to keep it alive. nothing wrong with that.

cableguy might be going to warzone alone! =0

Very strong statement by neo =0!!!

Forgive me if I’m wrong, but this is probably going to be the last BIG tournament before SSFIV, correct?

Anyway, I’m really looking forward to the stream of this if there is one. WCW last year was hands down excellent and had a whole bunch of classic moments.

We will have a stream available. We will update the thread and website as soon as it goes live.

Friday night’s 3v3 tournament should be streamed also.

Just a reminder that the day after tomorrow is the last day to book rooms. Still raffling away sticks, ASUS Monitor, XBox, PS3, giftcards, etc for those that book so make sure to get your reservations in!

yea I talked to neo about this, he said he didn’t mean he thinks he’s better than the other 5 people. Just that he thinks he has a shot at getting top 8 in a big tournament with all of those people there. That wasn’t a call out or anything.
