Yeah, most of it’s 4/6, but there is a battle theme from X on one of them :wgrin:
Nice! Lots of good videos … except for the one where that Fei Long player gets destroyed by Bison:xeye:.
Alright! I’d like to welcome you to the first (bi-weekly) FREAKY FUN FANTASTIC FRIDAY! Starting this week and then every other Friday, we’re going to put a twist on the play of the game, mix it up a little, put a little spice in the action, maybe make a couple people laugh, and generally force people and players out of their comfort zone. Every two weeks we’ll draw 2 unique variations which will be in play for all matches on Friday night. The variations are as follows:
Classic Mode Only
Random Character Select Only
Mirror Match Only
All Sets Best 3 of 5
Must pick other person’s main
All matches infinite time
Game must go best 3 of 5 rounds (Still best two of three games unless All sets is also drawn)
Single Man Team Style (Each player declares a team of either 2 or 3 characters in advance and plays game with them. Moving to the next character when they lose. The match is considered won when the opponent has lost with their entire team)
Loser Picks Winners Next Character (Both Players pick normally in the first game, the loser than picks the winners character for the second game and so on until the number of games required to win the set has been won)
(I’m open to suggestions on future possible additions to Future Freaky Fun Fantastic Fridays…)
So after the drawing this week, the following modifications for this week are…
**ALL SETS BEST 3 OF 5
AND
ALL RANDOM CHARACTER SELECT!!!**
We will do this in standard pool play fashion and I will list the matchups below, league points are on the line as per a standard 8 person pool play so there are some points to be had and it CAN affect the standings just enough to make a difference! Have fun with it and let’s get it on!

REMEMBER, Freaky Fridays are about fun and doing something different first, I think that in order for our league to grow, we need to have stiff competition, which we already have, and community building and fun events, which I think this may be a part of. BTW, I don’t think there’ll be any need to record matches, just have fun! Send me the results when you’re done and I’ll update pool play standings.
For random select, add a rule that the player must press the button before the timer runs out. If you let the timer run out in random select, you get Zangief every time.
I dont want to sound like a party pooper but I think I will pass on this. I’m having a hard enough time learing my one character and the desire to play other characters does nothing for me. Just being honest. Now if you had said team play such as 3 vs 3 or 4 vs 4 or something like that, I would have been game.
Oh teams! I totally should add that into the random draw… I don’t know why I didn’t have that in there… I’ll tell you what, because its the first week, I’m going to scrap random characters this week and draw something else… and yes that will be a rule. If the timer goes to zero and you haven’t selected you automatically lose in the future.
hey silver rain you forgot to include me in the matchups for tonight.
Oh whoops! I did. Thanks for the catch. I’ll put you into the BREAK spot
BTW, instead of random characters this week we’re going to do infinite time… no time out wins this Friday!
Wow… this has exploded… looks like a blast!
Oooh, I’m going to “randomly” select my main each game
Silver, you should do the selection of chars yourself, since there’s no way to enforce that random select was actually pressed
I just have a question… is this being sarcastic or is this serious?
And Zass… you can know if they select randomly. You can listen, when someone has their cursor over the random select you can hear it going. The other thing about that is, even if you couldn’t, I don’t think there’s anyone in our league who wouldn’t play by the rules… Fridays are about being freaky and fun and different, not about hardcore playtime. It’s a chance to play around and I don’t think anyone wouldn’t really do it if it was drawn.
I mean I was originally afraid that there could be a problem with Rage Quitting and calling it an innocent disconnect, and that has yet to happen once. Why? Because the people in our league have class and compete like real competitors, not whiny sissy babies… or cute kitty cats wearing Bison outfits… oh wait… umm… I… uh… er… what was I saying again?
^^^ Serious. No hate here. :china:
Then maybe Fatboy should get his rear off the couch and get into the game
Seriously, we’re having tons of fun, and there’s some stiff, STIFF competition in this league. I can say seriously now we have more than 20 members already in our European Division and we field up to 30 people in North America, just trying to get the word out, get more people to sign up, have more events, and eventually get these wonderful people the recognition they deserve, I think here in our league is the future of HDR, these are the people who will be winning the tournaments soon enough (I can say that since it helps I have two of last year’s top 8 from EVO here and picking one of them to win doesn’t sound ridiculous… :D)
SPREAD THE WORD! WWL 4 LIFE!
Silver, I have a request. I will be writing out a more detailed post on the exact whys later, but can you start keeping a record of EVERY match saved, with results, in chronological order?
In other words, let’s say thelo and I played a set to three in the finals and it was thelo, thelo, zass, zass, thelo (so he wins 3-2). I need an excel sheet that has
winner loser
thelo-honda zass-chun
thelo-honda zass-chun
zass-chun thelo-honda
zass-chun thelo-honda
thelo-honda zass-chun
The order matters.
The reason I want this is that I want to use the WWL results data to implement the TrueSkill ranking algorithm (same algorithm used for xbox live rankings), but to do it correctly, so that each player-character combination is ranked seperately.
I then plan on using this data to derive a tier list and matchup chart from this data.
Can you help by tracking this data? Even data from a “silly” tournament like the random select tournament is actually very helpful, since it introduces more data points.
Actually, yes we can, that’s part of the reason I have the reporting spreadsheet for everyone to use so we can keep track of that EXACT data in that EXACT way during pool play. I’m totally with you. And during tournament play, I do believe we can keep track of that data in a way that would be manageable. I completely agree that all the data is valuable… EXTREMELY valuable. I’m all for it, “I like this plan! I’m excited to be apart of it!”
One of the things we plan on adding to the website for everyone is a record of each players record against each other character… does Zass have a particular weakness against Sagat for example or whatever, but I definitely like using the data in multiple ways.
This sounds like a lot of fun. I might have to join in on the next one.
Here are a couple more suggestions of variations I’ve ran before that were fun:
Single Man Team Style
Basically, this is like CvS2. You pick a team of 2 or 3 characters(Depending on 2/3 or 3/5 matches). Then, when the matches happen you start with your first character. If you win, you keep using him. If you lose, you move onto your next character. So for example, here’s an imaginary 3/5 match:
SweetJV (Chun, Honda, Dhalsim) vs Damdai (Gief, Dhalsim, Ken)
Game1: My Chun beats Damdai’s Gief
Game2: My Chun loses to Damdai’s Sim
Game3: My Honda loses to Damdai’s Sim
Game4: My Sim beats Damdai’s Sim
Game5: My Sim loses to Damdai’s Ken
So, Damdai wins the set.
Loser stays and picks winners character
In this format, you start the first match normally - each player picks whatever character they want. Whoever loses that match must stick with the same character for the next match. But, they also get to chose what character the winner will play for the next match. This continues until 2/3 or 3/5 matches have been played. Here’s an imaginary 3/5 match example:
SweetJV (Sim) vs Zass (Chun) - Zass wins. I pick Sim for him
SweetJV (Sim) vs Zass (Sim) - SweetJV wins. He picks Gief for me
SweetJV (Gief) vs Zass (Sim) - Zass wins. I pick Bison for him
SweetJV (Gief) vs Zass (Bison) - SweetJV wins. He picks Fei for me
SweetJV (Fei) vs Zass (Bison) - Zass wins
So, Zass wins the set.
This format gets especially wild and whacky as it pushes towards the characters that you don’t use very often. We ran this once at Denjin and it was a riot.
I like both of these, I would modify the second one to say you can’t pick the same character twice for your opponent (You can’t keep them on Cammy for example) but I like both… I think those are both EXCELLENT additions to our Bi-Weekly Fantastically Freaky Fun Friday (I love alliteration…)
I have a question, do you declare your team in advance to your opponent in the first format?
And yes, you should be in our league, so should Fatboy, and everyone else who gives a damn about HDR. This place is the place to be yo!
Oh I totally just thought of another one. We could specifically make alterations for people who have higher league points than their opponent, using this as a type of equalizer in some cases… This is great stuff… Freaky Fridays might have to be come a regular weekly event if we keep thinking of crazy fun stuff like this…
I’m not sure if that’s really necessary. The only way you get to pick is if you lose. So, if I lose and pick Cammy for someone and then lose to their Cammy, why couldn’t I pick Cammy again if I wanted. At this point, since I already lost to their Cammy, it’s more of a gamble on my part to pick Cammy again. But maybe I just want revenge on their Cammy.
It is true that people could just make a gentlemen’s agreement and keep “counter-picking” each others mains back and forth, but I doubt most people would do that. I sure wouldn’t. That’s what regular tournaments are for.
Cool!
The way I’ve run this in the past, you declare your team before the tournament and stick with that same team throughout all of your matches. The only question is whether or not you should be allowed to change the order of your characters per set. Maybe people could vote on what they prefer for that.
If it wasn’t too late already, I’d join today’s game. I’ll try to make the next Freaky Friday for sure though.
I fear that might get a little overly complicated. It’s probably easier to just have one set of rules for the whole tourney. However, there was an online ST ranbat back in the day called Super Sundays(This genesis of 2DF BTW!) that used an interesting system to equalize skill levels. I don’t remember the specifics, but Damdai can probably fill you in. The basic gist was this: You played against whoever you wanted, and you got X skill points for winning a set. But, the number of matches you needed to win a set depended on your difference in skill rating.
So, if I played someone of ~equal rating, we might both need 3 matches to win, just like a standard 3/5 set. But, if I was ranked way higher than someone, I might need to win 5 matches to win the set, while they only need to win 2. It sounds crazy, but it actually worked pretty well. It got a little goofy when the spread was extreme like 8-2, or so. But even then, it worked better than you’d think. The biggest problem with sets like that was mostly that they took forever to play.
Noooo! Random is way more freaky and fun! But you should randomly pick everyone’s character ahead of time, and pick again if you get their main.:looney: But either way, I was stoked to read it was random, then bummed when you changed it.
Haha yeah, I remember playing silly 10 vs 1 sets on 2df like a year ago. Fun stuff.
