I’ve been hoping brokentier would make a weaponlord shirt for a while now, don’t really think its ever going to happen though - not unless a resurgence of the “pulp” fighters like weaponlord/eternal champions happens. I don’t think that’s in the cards either, oh well…
I think there’s an older weaponlord thread and some of you may remember i had send D.James an email asking him about weaponlord. At the time he said he was looking to buy the rights to the game and try for an XBL release. He also had a blog up but i can’t remember the address and i’m too lazy to look through all of my favorites. Anyways, i’m curious to what happened. After he released shred nebula he just disappeared. I know he visits SRK sometimes, so hopefully he sees this and gives us an update.
cool thread. big ups to hubcapsignstop for mentioning this to me on the other thread from last time.
aside from Plasma Sword/Star Gladiator, Weaponlord is the only other weapon-based fighting game that needs a new installment. Battle Arena Toshinden doesn’t count since it’s garbage.
Personally glad to see this brought back up, here’s hoping for a re-release at some point, also a new word from Djames would be really cool, I’m curious how much would it have cost to get the rights…
We all know why this is popular:
I respect it but the controls hold it back, plus it doesn’t have a scene. Question: Do top players use all 12 specials per character or do they mostly use the traditional input-based specials over those weird Primal Rage hold two button specials.
I am defintely no top player, but I mained Zorn and I remember using all his specials regularly (except maybe his power deflect shield dive, again I was not at high level). About the same with my secondary chars Zarak and Divada, the moves were not thrown in for the sake of them being there, they had purpose (as far as I could tell).
And as far as the non-conventional motions are concerned, let me repost from another thread:

Would it be possible to do something on Steam? That seems to be the ideal place for game development and a lot of small developers have seen success in it. The only problem is that you would need to create an engine from scratch but at least you own the engine and not subject to Mugen licensing terms and can make some cash out of it. Plus you could implement online to however you like.
Wow, time has flown by, this quote from me is probably from when I was at BioWare or maybe even Blizzard… I am now at another company and have yet to find programmers interested in doing an open-source side project like this (not that I can based on my current employment without permission).
To answer your question, making some engine like this able to run on steam is a cool idea, but I think the critical thing is to have the engine be stand alone first. The amount of work to do it is the problem, once you get into all the crazy shit people will want, the systems stack and become… well… complicated and delay things, I am sure the guys over on Skull Girls can attest to just how much work this is.
I just wish mugen made 1 lick of sense to me, I would just do fun mock ups in that all day long and do an HD directors cut of korr vs bane just for fun. If anyone on this thread is a mugen master and wants to talk offline, hit me up on srk email to maybe help me get going
man I use to love this game on Super Nintendo back when I was a kid…I thought I was the only one who use to play this…would love for them to bring it back!! game was just awesome!
How could a WL reboot not make sense or be anything but right?
My youngest cousin brought over some game mag and in it was a Weaponlord ‘20th anniversary’ article. The weblink below includes walkthrough with Goddard (and reimagined SG-style ‘screenshots’). Hahaa The mag article (couldnt find this online) had a side article with Seth Killian giving WL props and apparently he has his own fighter coming out soon.
I would like a new one. The Skullgirl based design tribute from a few weeks ago would be “acceptable” to have, because I would have expected much better sprites today in comparison to what was done in the past. Either way, I would still prefer that over the fake 2d.5. I wish for a full 2d experience. I couldn’t bare dropping another 2d game. This is my favorite one surprisingly.
My favorite 2d fighter. A pretty ambitious gameplay engine with barbarian characters, which I strongly prefer a more primitive era. It’s amazing to be able to perform death or infinities for it’s time with the absence of a super meter. It’s kind of hard for me to follow modern FGs and not have a sequel to this.
