i joined up on this site just express my love for this game
but i just got flamed by members who explained to my scrub — that WL belonged among the ranks of clayfighter, ballz, etc
glad to see SRK has somewhat less f------y cliquish-ness
What I find funny is that most people did not know who James Goddard was! And then I tell them that DJames designed Dee Jay (hence the name) and worked on SF2 and this normally shuts these kind of people up, as they don’t know what to say when they find out it’s true. Even here on SRK it happened when I 1st commented on DJames working on SF2, when people were saying how bad WL was…
The animation wasn’t up to par with SF2, and most of the other elite games, but its play mechanics were way ahead of their time (and still are) as I have yet to find a game with the amount of depth WeaponLord has.
WeaponLord made the Parry/Thrust Block a main part of it’s gameplay, and then you have the Weapon Breaks, Guard Drops, Openers and Deflects. Not to mention the control was very responsive as well…
If remember correctly from the Gamepro magazine, I think they left out a Gargoyle? Like I said, I think that’s what the character was.
I pretty much wrote the WeaponLord Wikipedia entry by myself, and had a bunch of cool character pages, but they were taken down for whatever reason.
I emailed DJames a year ago, and he told me the same thing about hoping to get the WL rights back from Namco…why would Namco possibly want to hold onto those if they’re not going to do anything with them?
Yeah, it did have the best fatality system ever, I constantly tell my friends how good WeaponLord is, but only a few even bat an eyelash at it.
yeah, i remember reading that too
the controllable character was actually twin goblin guys
i thought that was a great concept, had my imagination going wild for awhile
i would still like to see that implemented
Yes it is a great concept. Something like that was implemented in Battle Monster (Van Battle) for Sega Saturn in wich a twin “clown” or something fight… Slapp Happy Rythm Busters have a dual character too. The last I ve seen was Ice Climber in Super Smash Bros. Melee.
I have never heard of that game until now. This topic has gotten me curious to check it out however.
Being a late 1995 title might have had something to do with it, since 1995 was when Saturn/PSOne arrived. By then the 16-bit era was nearly dead and everyone was checking out the new stuff.
It was 12+ years ago when I read that magazine article, and I knew it was some kind of a D&D type character…I just couldn’t remember.
I’ll work on getting those vids to you as well…
Btw Hanzo, I just got an external TvTuner/Capture Card, so I’m going to be messing around with it, as my next class doesn’t start until the 16th…:bgrin:
I have very fond memories of Weaponlord. I bought it when it came out and I played it on Xband for a while. This game was tailor made for Xband. It’s too bad the game was rushed out right before the 32 bit systems were about to be released.
This game had SO much going for it. I can only hope they somehow bring the series back to life. My dream version of it would be SF3 style animation with high res sprites.
The fighting system in WL really was deeper than any other fighting game (SC included)
The graphics don’t look like much compared to what we have nowadays, but man some of the matches I would have with my friends were legendary!
Also, this is the type of game where if you were better than your opponent, you wouldn’t lose. The learning curve is so steep that you can literally control your opponent every match. Frustrating for those who aren’t good.
